I have listened to a dozen versions or so. Half are major and half are minor. I prefer the former. And thanks for all of the chanties. We are putting together an album - one day.
@Beemerboy324 Sounds good, and thanks. As for the tune, the minor one is what's found in the oldest sources, I believe (e,g, Chappell, William: Popular Music of the Olden Time). However, the major one seems to have become popular in tradition in a later period.
@hultonclint Or airoplanes in english. Yeah, I just found out about how famous Joe actually was... I had no idea... I've just known him for ages and he drinks in a local pub!!
Thank you, Kate. Frankly, I prefer this version, in the major key and probably the "original," although in recent decades a minor key version has become very popular for some reason.
Thanks a lot! I wonder, why did your dad "make" you learn it? Yeah I know Flogging Molly, but I generally keep my punk rock and my 19th century songs on different sides of the plate ;)
Merry christmas to you and best for a peaceful day!
Sure, I have recorded lots of sea shanties on youtube. Some are so-so, others are pretty fun, even if rough around the edges. Check my channel pages and you'll find the "Shanties from the Seven Seas" playlist. Also, "Drunken Sailor" is the main featured video on my channel page. I just recorded the "Yankee" version of Spanish Ladies a couple days ago: it's under "Talcahuano Gals" :)

@666jimmysmusicgirl yeah, it was at a small "house concert" in the States. Why do you ask?
hultonclint 3 months ago
@hultonclint In the States??? No, I don't think you mean the same Joe Stead.
666jimmysmusicgirl 3 months ago
@666jimmysmusicgirl Of course I do. There are such things as airplanes.

@ozzyfreak994 Serious, no, but sincere? Yes! It *is* possible in the Irony Age to be sincere.

You clearly spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do with your hands. The hard part to figure out is how you ended up picking that..
