Whenever I watch this show I'm torn between feeling sympathy towards the hoarders and feeling anger. On when hand it's a disorder, and often brought on by some tragic events like a family member dying. On the other hand, it kind of frustrates me when people are weak and can't handle their own existence. I just want to yell at them and say "Come on, you're better than this! You have strength and you don't even know it. Use it!"

I haord to some degree but eventually get sick of it - ( dad did best he could alone) I was poor and had little to eat and just a few outfits that I had to mix and match everyday in high school, therefore I hoard clothes and buy way to much food, I have a 8 years old and a 3 week old - my kids will never have to worry about clothes - I bought a huge dresser set for my daughter and filled it with baby clothes to last her till she is 1. I am always buying new clothes for my son too......
I once was a friend with a lady who was a hoarder. She is a teacher for public schools and the steady paycheck is her ticket to keep hoarding more things. She runs a website that called freecycle that lists things that people are giving away for free and uses it to shop for things to hoard and possibly sell. A lot of these hoarders work for the government or big business, who would love someone addicted to material possessions. Would any business turn away someone with a material addiction? NO

there's more than just throwing stuff away. you get attached. and the attachment grows. I clean hoarders homes, you have to be sympathic with these people. some understand to toss it out and they make progress. some are in denial because of attachment issues. once those issues are addressed they then feel free to toss out the stuff, the trash, the garbage and start new. it's not easy but it can be done. now because i help clean their homes, i'm extra clean in mine.

I get hoarding is a disorder, but hoarding boxes, pet corpses and year old peanut butter in the fridge while your eight-month-old baby crawls around in feces is just pathetic.

Its and OCD(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) were a person feels the need that they need to keep something. Eventually it becomes the need to keep a lot of things. You heard that one guy say "We are not hoarders, we are collectors". In their mind set they feel that they are just simply collecting things, and when it is time to let go of those things, they can't. This is because they have an some kind of unusual emotional connection with an item. Unfortunately its with all the items.

A lot of these people do have psychological problems but unfortunately a lot of them ARE just dumb slobs who can't appreciate the fact that they have their own house so they abuse it and that disgusts me. But compared to the other hoarder programs, A&E focuses a lot more on those with actual disorders.

This is a medical, mental condition. I don't have it, but I know someone who does and she would do anything to "just clean up," but it isn't that easy. Not at all.

You heard that one guy say "We are not hoarders, we are collectors". In their mind set they feel that they are just simply collecting things, and when it is time to let go of those things, they can't. This is because they have an some kind of unusual emotional connection with an item. Unfortunately its with all the items.

Seeing this brings it all flooding back for me. My mother herself is a classic hoarder-type and my father did absolutely nothing other to let her keep doing it and bitch about it (main reason why I stopped seeing eye-to-eye with him since finally coming of age, especially in recent years). To those out there who don't have parents like that, consider yourselves very fortunate. This is the kind of erratic behavior that can tear families apart if allowed to linger for too long (years!!!)
