ya because you stand out more when you use a pick, you are easier to be heard when there is a whole band together. but at times i use my fingers to blend in more for different songs, it all depends on how you want to sound. picks make you cleaner and stand out more while just your fingers make you blend in with everyone. both good for different times

Yeah, you could hardy hear Newstead most of the time, Cliff Burton was a guitarist who picked up a bass, and still wasn't very good, and Trujillo sold out when he joined Metallica (They paid him 1 million dollars just for joining the band).

All in all, if you listen to Metallica, I hope to God it's not for the bass.
