the price is only a problem for those that can't afford it. Look at it this way, a carpenter doesn't buy junk tools because he makes his living from them, so I'm sure professional musicians do the same. Personally, I'd buy a plane ticket to someplace warm and stay until the 25 grand was gone.
@alderaforall To be honest a mandolin that costs a lot doesn't sound any better than a cheap one. They are all made out of the same wood. Its psychology, after you blow all that money you have to tell yourself, Boy don't that mandolin sound good? It's braggin rights. I don't regret buying a cheap one at all.
25 large for that ??? No one can tell me that this instrument sounds or plays 5 times better than one costing 5, or ten times better than a 2500 dollar mando. This is all a load of ol hogwash and a damn fine way to part some fool from his hard earned cash . Go get yerself a very good one for 1000 dollars, and spen a tiny bit on getting it set up good..................you'll be just fine and dandy.
I paid 18 bucks to see him in Saginaw play the mandolin, some 25 years ago; bought his records; bought his cassettes; bought some cds; dont think I'll buy a fuckin 25k mandolin; I play mandolin, and thats pure goofy to think this mandolin is worth more than gold!
there are different kinds of specialty picks made for the mandolin....but I prefer guitar picks to use on them. Try different picks out and see which ones work for you.
@jawsrocks yes mandolin picks are different than guitar... they are super thick, and round,,, not triangular.. a pic k with a tip kills the tone. fact
@jawsrocks its a matter if preference. Ive been playing for almost 4 years and I pretty much went from a thin diameter to a thicker one, right now I use the white clayton 1.52 mm ones. different picks produce different tones too, and if you want you can spend a pretty penny on a pick
Though I'm sure Ricky knows more about mandolins than I will ever know, he is taking the cash on this one, and common sense tells us that an instrument has to be played for years before it sounds right. Music does something to the wood, there's magic in them vibrations.
I'm sure they sound great, but give me a break. "Distressed"? Gag me with a spoon. Where I come from we call people who do things like that "posers". These are the same people who "antique" furniture. And people pay more for this? What, are you goofy?
It sounds great, but the price is a killer. How about a Collings MF5V for half the price? I like Gibson and I can see paying a premium for the name, it's just too much premium is all.
It's not exactly the same thing as buying a distressed pair of jeans.. Sound is improved with the age of the instrument, and if that can be achieved brand new, right off the shelf.. why not? I do think it's way overpriced, though, and most of that is I'm sure due to the Ricky Skaggs endorsement.
Not sure what song it is but I've figured out the part in the D chord but when it goes to the A chord I don't know how he plays it. I'm not a very experienced mandolin player. I play guitar and bass
A Gibson will always be a Gibson....thank you Ricky.

@ginmillsinger - OMG, are you serious? 25 thousand amercan dollars?
At that price, you need to be able to live in it! Are you sure they weren't quoting the chinese price? 25 thousand yen?! lol
Who has that kind of cash for an instrument? I mean besides Ricky himself?

What is the point of having an instrument which LOOKS old, but has no history? You cannot buy pre-made sentimentality. It's just not how it works.
Bateleur5 2 years ago
What a great deal!
waggawaggaz 2 years ago
Yeah it is a little pricey considering the fact that the most expensive Martin guitar which is the D-45 isn't near that much.
