After watching Nureyev perform that male variation at 4:03, I simply cannot take anyone else seriously. Not to say that this performance isn't absolutely amazing, but Nureyev's beastly magnetism is something that will be forever missed..

@osiasb I have to disagree with you here. Comparing young dancers of today with the stars of yesteryear is futile. I speak as one who saw 3 of Nureyev's first six Corsaires in London, Nov 62 to Jan 63. He couldn't do half of the things that Simkin does, and yet is was still a sensational experience, which I have never forgotten. We must not live with the tyranny of the past. I could write reams on this subject. I'm just thrilled that I can see such a performance as Mr Simkin's.

Daniil is too amazing for words!!! My favorite in terms of body line besides Friedemann Vogel. I love how easy he makes it look--"Here, I'm just gonna hold this arabesque perfectly because I can..." :D Great facial expressions, too.

he has an engaging presence. he has charisma. he has nearly perfect lines (nobody is perfect). he has incredible speed, litheness, and skills. he is an intelligent dancer.  he always seems to be pointing in the right direction. his arms are almost always symmetrical when they need to be. he always seems to be well balanced and on his toes. he has great artistic sensibilities. he has his parents' love and support. he is simply awesome. I can love ballet because of him. :)

Ok, let's go down the list and explain why he is NOT Baryshnikov.

1. Baryshnikov didn't allow his ribs to be open like Simkin, because it looks gay.

2. Baryshnikov didn't have some cheesy face, the same cheesy face in everything he does regardless of character, in everything he does, Simkin does.

3. Baryshnikov was a way better dancer than his father, Simkin is not.

4. Baryshnikov had great port de bras, Simkin does not.

5. Baryshnikov was awesome, Simkin no so much.

Do you see how he swings those arms before his pirouettes? That was a no-no in the RAD classes that I was in. Then I joined the Russian style & only then did I discover awesome technique. How he swings those arms for preps to his pirouettes are so out of the rules but it works....BRAVO

Daniil is more suited for the refined princely roles. This type of slave role is more suited to a less refined brute with larger muscles and more aggressive attack style.

That said, that was one of the cleanest 7-turn finish I've seen. It's just a little too refined and pretty for this type of role.

Actually Maria Kochetkova, a great star at SF Ballet (a company that has an incredibly deep roster of amazing, world class ballerinas), is a great match for Daniil and more than his equal.
