talking to a ham radio operator in California, he said he was in the audience of this show.. when Lena came out, a feeling came over him that he was in the present of someone special that comes along only once in a century. as for me, it was hard to believe the perfect timing with the band she had at her age. her dad must have been one heck of a teacher. her spirit still lives.
Oh Lena! What a beautiful wee soul, torn and twisted by the greedy adults who tried to exploit you! There's a lot of truth in the comments the tv guys make...this is the problem with young kids who sound adult.
I can accept all criticisms. Anyway, with such of her brilliant talent, I suppose she would be the greatest star in the world. Frankly speaking, she could be better than Mariah Carey. But why?
I am so ignorant as I've just known Lena now. Just a coincidence as I sought Youtube for the song "The end of the world". I could'nt belive that she could interpret the song so billiantly, just a child of 10. I was attracted by her. Just got from discussion forum that she passed away from the anorexia. Very sad form hearing this Bad news. She was 36 when she said goodbye to this world?
Well it's not insensitive, because they didn't KNOW what was going to happen. But I see what you mean in the respect that watching it now, it is heartbreaking =(
i guess they are just so American with their loud sense of humour but I Always believe that children should be referred to with care.I think thay during her life she was not handled with care and that her schedule and the publicity was not helthy for a child.I recommend you see the interview. And the sad documentary.
Oh U absolutely agree with you there, but I blame her carers/handlers and parents, rather than interviewers who don't really have a say to be honest.
Thanks for sending me the videos, but I have seen the interview, and look forward to seeing the documentary when I have time to sit down and watch it in its entirety.
Lesley Gore never covered this song... Helen Shapiro did a cover in the early 1960's, Karen Carpenter did a gorgeous cover in 1973. Agentha from Abba also covered it, as did Herman's Hermits, Mud and probably loads more people... Its a simply divine song
Lastly I can,t comment on your cousins situation because I am not a psychiatrist but I think that the media ideal of women being slender is only one of the things that are a factor. There was a girl in my class when I was in school who was clearly anorexic and an only child,I haven,t heard anything about her for years.
She did look like she was actually crying here but she wasn,t.Very Charming performance. but I can,t help thinkng that people shold have waited for her to turn 18 before there was a public career in front of the media for her.
I've noticed that in other videos I've seen of her singing even in later years that many times she looks like she's crying.
I agree about the age though. Makes you wonder if that's what lead to Anorexia at such an early age. A lot of things can lead to it.
I had a first cousin that suffered from it for 6 years. A lot of it came from her Dad never being around since he has always been such a workaholic. At least that was one of the conclusions her psychiatrists came to.
yes I a thinking that the media exposure at too young an age had alot to do with her problems and also that she was living away from her family from the age of 10 with her manager and when the manager was away, with her relatives in Mondon(the relatives in London were nice people) but from seeing the documentary the manager seems such a cold person from what I can see.
i cry when i hear her she was amazing always had so emotion in her songs, there will never ever be another like her she was unique sing with the Angels Lena Bless you xx
At this particular performance I don,t think she,s upset but I would agree with you that in later performances(i.e.late teens and early twenties)she obviously looks upset. And yet nobody noticed.I watched "going nowhere 1981" with the sound turned down and it was a bit scary according to me.
Yea sawsmith35 - you vex me too. Heres a little girl away from home and beginning a very unique and troubled life. Whats the matter with you? I consider the talent and life of Lena Zavaroni to be the stuff of legend. I read your comments and wanted to tell you what to do with that saw of yours, but I would be no better than you.
I hope you do but only because of your sick and PATHETIC remarks. This little girl never had a life - never got the chances you have - discovered, delivered and destroyed by those who made money out of her.... so yes I hope you do feel very very sick - at YOURSELF
Went as low as 3 and 1/2 stone, one group of her family did try to help her (note it wasn't her immediate family) Eventually had so much disbelieve in herself had a lobotomy (that could be wrong medical term) died on benefits alone in a flat.... why when she had earned so much money was that the case - she didn't live an extravagent lifestyle - where did her money go - why did her family live of her but not support her
Many here in the UK still keep a place in our heart, for the 'little girl with the big voice' who brought joy to millions. Lena was such a gentle soul, who despite suffering greatly in life was always gracious and dignified. If bugg53 had a better understanding of talent, adversity and decorum, and had bugg53 known that, when Lena was just a teenager, her "mummy" was the victim of a vicious rape. Then perhaps bugg53 might have formed a more rational 'opinion'.
It brings a shiver down my spine! This little child singing a song of broken hearts with all the maturity of an experienced and disappointed adult. Her life was far too intense, what with the pressures of a career and that obnoxious opportunistic manager of hers, beginning when she was only 10. Poor Lena was destined to an early and tragic end.
I find the beauty of this song/performance a bit creepy and lovely at the same time. The creepy is how tragic her life ultimately ended, and how such a pure, innocent, joyful, compassionate, sweet child could have had to grow up with that stupid, selfish agent when she was ONLY TEN!!! The beauty ofcourse, is Lena. She is seriously an angel and this is the most angelic performance I have EVER seen from any performer. NO ONE nowadays, has as much of Jesus' Beauty like Lena had.
she went through anerexia and went to the hospital for a surgery to help stop the eating disorder and she died of a chest infection in the hospital at the age of 35 or somewhere around there
As a child she was taken by an agency away from her family (why did they let her go!!), she entertained throughout the world, had her own shows, record success, developed anorexia because those around her made money from her as a child and she was frightened to grow up.
how the hell does ANYONE (much less, a sweet, little ten year-old???) make a song their OWN??! How did she possibly do it??? She was sooooooooo gifted, and this world was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not good enough for an angel like Lena.
That was an amazing performance. Compare her here to the girls who've been on recent talent contests who they rave about on here. They don't even hold a candle to her. She had a much better voice and put such true feeling into it, even at such a young age. I think this is the best child performance I've ever seen.
this song was the one i played over and over again when i was 12 when my fantastic nan, elsie wright died.thats how i felt that the world,or shud i say my world had ended.the words really sum up how i felt, the song still makes me cry and reminds me of my nan,the most wonderful person ive had the honour of having in my life, sue

Silva Dee and Arthur Kent wrote the song. The late Skeeter Davis recorded the original hit version in 1962, I think.
