  • *BUTTERFLY*

  • What gauge is the copper, and did you buy it with the enamel.coating?

  • @gabee106

I used 10 gage copper house wire. It had plastic insulation which I removed. Almost any size wire will work, but bigger equals more torque. Enamelled wire will work only if the enamel is removed at the points of electrical contact.

  • can i use an ordinary magnet?

  • @justinbeheart

The magnet must be a powerful neodymium type magnet, available online at a place like K&J Magnetics (link in the "Show More..." box)

The magnet from a shake-to-charge flashlight will also work.

  • @MrfixitRick how do you make the heart so symmetrical?

  • @1990fordf150custom

    Very carefully! hehe

I bend the wire over a form like a pipe or a battery. I have bending instructions at my Instructables site...the link is in the "show more" box.

  • if i used a regular battery will it ever run out?

  • @dreamer32993

Yes, a regular battery will run out about the same as a rechargeable one...anywhere from 5 minutes to 1/2 an hour, depending on the type of heart and so on.

  • Is it possible to buy the closed heart design (soldered end?) or did you craft this yourself? I have seen these hearts in other videos which suggests to me they are available for sale.

  • @agvulpine

Hearts may be available at some craft stores. I made these hearts myself of 10 gauge copper wire. I would sell the closed design one for $10 plus shipping. If you want one, contact me.

  • Fly away little heart Fly away!!!

  • will a stronger magnet make is spin faster?

  • would i need a weaker battery or a weaker magnet if i wanted to make it spin slower? or just make the shape bigger?

  • @RPGgrenade

Yes to all of those questions!

  • @MrfixitRick cool because if i made this for a girl i wouldn't want it to spin so fast it'd look like it could slice someone (even though it can't)

  • @RPGgrenade

Ok, I get it! Less is better ;)

Use a smaller diameter 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch neodymium magnet of N42 strength, like # D88 from K&J Magnetics (link in the "Show More box) Or, stack 4 of 1/2 inch x 1/8 inch neo super-magnets, sometimes found at craft stores.

Thinner copper wire will tend to spin slower.

Note: Don't use a weak battery, as it will wear down too fast and could make you look like a wimp! Do use a rechargeable battery as it is slightly lower voltage, so less speed.

  • can i use a simple magnet instead of a neodymium magnet?

  • @SuperNorbits

Simple magnets are not generally powerful enough for this. Unless it is a bass speaker magnet...(see comments below)

  • can i simply cover a magnet with a metallic ,,sheet ,,and then just ,,do the ,,thing you did ,,wil it work ??

  • @somukdutta

That will work, but the magnet must be very strong. You can also use the back of a big bass speaker, as seen in another movie of mine, "Two Hearts Become One" youtube.etc/watch?v=nERQQl7KlHc

  • Very nice use of a DC motor there, would make a great little gift for a table setting on Valentines Day.

  • "hearts on fire".......... heartburn?

  • oh,.oh,.oh,..oh,..

    oh my,..how !?

  • @Justin77126

Hehe, for an explanation, see wikipedia under "homopolar motor" and especially "homopolar generator". Full building instructions are in this video's "show more" box in the link to Instructables.

  • @MrfixitRick

    Thanks Bro

  • Wow very cool...

  • what is the thing under the battery?

  • @thynaruto magnet

  • @thynaruto

That's right, it's a neodymium super-magnet, available online or at some stores.

  • If you use a rechargeable battery, that thing will run forever! XD

  • Sorry if this was stated befor about the music song. But if you have written permission by the author of the song, you can make a claim to youtube so they put the audio back or face the consequences :P

  • @zonaloca

Unfortunately, the author of the song is different than the owner of the rights to the song. WMG (Warner Music Group) has the rights to the song. Just because my stepson (one of the band) gave me permission to use the song doesn't necessarily give me the legal rights to it. Yeah, it sucks, and yeah, it's stupid.

  • in the starting, is the object on the left supposed to look like a penis?

  • @UsAsiansEatRice

No, you've just got the heart on up side down.

  • Los materiales son de alambre de cobre calibre 10, una fuerte batería AA, y un imán de neodimio de un tamaño de 1 pulgada por 1 / 2 pulgada. (aproximadamente 24x12 mm)

The materials are 10 gage copper wire, a strong AA battery, and a neodymium magnet of size 1 inch by 1/2 inch. (approximately 24 x 12 mm)

  • quiero saber cuales son los materiales...

  • Where do you get thos kind of magnets?

  • @MrThefunblast

I get neodymium magnets online from K&J Magnetics...link in the "Show More" box.

  • where does the energy go to?

  • @usernamegta4

The energy gets used up in wind resistance, rubbing friction, and heating up of the battery and magnet due to internal electrical resistance.

  • @MrfixitRick so it is waste of energy

  • @usernamegta4

I'd suggest it's not a waste of energy for the over one million people who have seen this video.

  • @MrfixitRick GOOD 1!

  • heyyyyyyyyyyyy que bonitooooooooooooooooooo

  • Nice

  • u should have set it on fire

  • que dahora boooy!!

  • yo bro can i use any kind of wire??? or only copper

  • @MrRayz21

You can use any conducting wire except for steel. The better the conductor, the better the motor performs.

  • @MrfixitRick can i only use non magnetic metals or not .

  • @MrRayz21

Yes, the wire should be non-magnetic, or it will stick to the magnet and cause too much friction.

  • ENERGY INVESTED IN SOMETHING THAT HAD POTENTIAL (;

  • i made this and gave it to my girlfriend

so since that night, i'm not a virgin any more !

  • @stuang000

And now YOUR heart is on fire!

  • @stuang000 awesome!

  • i dont get it

  • @LuigiMcManus

What part do you not get?

  • How does changing the quality add music?

  • @First3Months

The sound was removed by WMG from the original 360p quality setting. I don't know why they missed the 240p version!

  • great work! Wolf Parade is one of my favorite bands

  • so, why isnt this energy converted large-scale and placed inside cars?

  • @justinlaboy

To make it efficient requires supercooled superconductors. And large neodymium magnets are expensive. Google "naval homopolar" for info on the latest 25,000 horsepower marine homopolar motors.

  • @MrfixitRick man, if we can tap the knowledge of putting this into vehicles, we would be set! this is awesome

  • @justinlaboy ignorant scientists n chemist who wont make it easier for human production n mother nature....

  • "hearts are on fire" *Explosions come to mind* :)

  • Ahahah, "Now, if you turn it upside down, it's a magical pair of balls."

  • donde se consigue ese imán

  • @Dannyjuado

It is a strong neodymium magnet. Any size from 1/2 to 1 inch (1 to 3 cm) will work fine. It is available online from places like K&J Magnetics. They ship internationally.

Help support mrfixitrick's experiments by using the K&J Magnetics Partner link in the "Show more" box under the video.

  • Where are the poles of the magnet? Up/down or this is a composite multipole magnet?

  • @zapparello

This neodymium magnet is axially magnetized, meaning the poles in this case are oriented up and down.

  • Where can i found that piece of metal?

  • @anhduyvodinh

The metal under the battery is a strong neodymium magnet. It is available online from K&J Magnetics and they ship internationally. The link is in the "Show more" box under the video.

  • wow wait HOW DID I CAME HERE?

  • can you make one liver shaped?

  • @TheMandarklaughs

Kidneys would be easier, but liver can be done. Send a picture of yours, and I'll try to duplicate it in wire.

  • the thing on left at @ 0:05 looks more like penis

  • i do not believe the first to be a heart..

  • wheres the fire!?

i wanted to see flaming hearts

  • @josepchappa

The fire is in your Heart. Look inside to find it. ;)

  • I can't get it to work:( STUPID THING!!

  • @Chazhudd10

Are you using a strong neodymium magnet?

    Is the battery fully charged?

    Is it copper wire?

Let me know and I can help you through it.

  • jeje parece un pende el que se ace con los corazones jejejeje

  • or you can just go buy a motor

  • El mejor que e visto

  • omg ! i just worked out how to get free electricity by watching this vidoe , you morons dont really now what you seeing ?

  • @zakaslam1

Post a video, I can hardly wait!

  • @zakaslam1 I just worked out how to get free lulz by reading your comment

  • @zakaslam1 they see me trollin' (8)

  • @zakaslam1 you're wrong you cant get more energy from it than you put in it

  • @zakaslam1 you suck, its impossible to get free electricity from a battery that consumes energy...

  • @leogabitoro Yes you can Electricity Magnet Generator ! 9 volts converted to 9000 volts by magnets positioned in the correct manner so it lines up with the earth magnetic fields !

  • @zakaslam1 how is it free electricity if you need a battery to produce the current?

  • I had a friend who USED to do stuff like this.

  • last look like boobs

  • wher can u get the magnet

  • @andrewrebullar

Neodymium magnets are available online at a place like K&J Magnetics. Click on the link in the "Show More".

  • You wont do this with a lithium battery your way too scared

  • Awww i thought looking at the thumbnail and title that the battery was going to short circuit causing the heart to go up in flame

  • it's almost amazing how fast that thing is. imagine if you tripled the size :O!

  • 1:20 penis

  • f'king magnets, how do they work?

  • can we use any types of magnet? i meant does it have to be realy strong magnet?

  • @AlkaZinc

It has to be a strong magnetic field. That usually means a neodymium magnet (available online or from a shake-type flashlight), or a large bass speaker magnet will work with washers or coins underneath the battery as a contact.

  • I loved this!!! I brought everything you needed to do this to my school and showed it to my class and the next thing I know everyone wants to be my friend.

  • @xXsk8erb0iXx

Thanks for sharing such a Heart-warming story!

  • @MrfixitRick A cheesy joke? Only the best kind!

  • @xXsk8erb0iXx I almost cried !

  • Holy shit.

  • why does it turn counter-clockwise in some videos and in others, it turns clockwise? placement of magnets?

  • @WatsupBroh

The rotation of the motor will be determined by the Lorentz Force, according to the orientation of the North-South magnetic field, and the direction of current in the wire (battery with + facing up, or + facing down).

The magnet or battery may be flipped over in some other experiments, reversing the forces on the wire and the direction of the motor.

  • @MrfixitRick; may be its because its in ...example positive... its diff. in rotation than the positive side of the magnet..... or battery..

  • likeeee

  • is it copper wire?

  • @witchhunter8862

Yes, I used 10 gage solid core copper wire, stripped from household wiring.

  • strong battery, arent we?

  • This calls for spinning death blades. Yes, I went there.

  • Buenas. No entiendo como funciona sin escobillas.

  • @hludens2007

El alambre de cobre actúa como un cepillo, pero no hay ningún conmutador como en un motor normal. Faraday inventó el motor homopolar, pero no podía explicarlo. Funciona por el principio de Lorentz, descubierto 30 años después de Faraday muerto.

The copper wire acts as a brush, but there is no commutator as in a regular motor. Faraday invented the homopolar motor, but could not explain it. It works by the Lorentz principle, discovered 30 years after Faraday died.

  • i fall in love with magnets ... ^_^

  • @supersankha

I have always loved magnets. We can't see the invisible forces of magnets, yet we can feel the attraction and repulsion.

I believe magnetic fields will be the most important factor in mankind's future.

  • Epic fail. First heart looked like a penis.

  • thats the power of love

" It will run down the battery in a few minutes and sometimes make it hot. "

  • @MrfixitRick thanks!

  • :O oh my cat, its amazing!!

The battery is a powerful NiMH rechargeable 1.2 volt. There is a neodymium supermagnet under the battery. The copper wire will rotate from the magnetic forces.

  • @MrfixitRick no sirve cualquier bateria?

    ni cualquier cable?

  • @i0jorge

Cualquier batería va a estar bien. El tamaño del cable de calibre 8 a 18 calibre está bien, cuanto más grande mejor.

Any battery is ok. The wire size can be 8 gage to 18 gage.

  • This is wicked awesome!

  • :)

  • sin palabras!! Muy bueno

  • cheap helicopter

  • Pretty rad man, thanks for sharing.

  • lovely!!!

  • @SquirrelGoneBananas

    Thanks for the lovely comment!

  • WMG sucks!

  • :O :O

  • como vc fez esse coraçao?

  • @crpistori

Há instruções completas para fazer esses corações no link encontrado no "Show mais" caixa.

There are full instructions to make these hearts at the link found in the "Show more" box.

  • will black magnets work.........reply please

  • @mydecae

The usual black magnets are not powerful enough to do this experiment. You need to use a neodymium supermagnet. They are available online from a place like K&J Magnetics or from inside a shake-type rechargeable flashlight.

You can also use the back of a big bass speaker like I show in another movie called "Two Hearts Become One", see it at youtube.com/watch?v=nERQQl7KlHc

  • @MrfixitRick

Actually these magnets are also found at craft stores and on many normal items a lot of people already own, such as the darts with magnetic dart boards, magnetic LED flashing pins and magnetic earrings

  • supercool

  • Lol attach propellers, flying battery. Problem Newton fanboys?

  • porqué sólo da vueltas hacia ese lado?

  • @larm711

Debido a la fuerza de Lorentz, la corriente en el alambre se convierte el cable de una forma en la que el campo magnético.

(Because of the Lorentz force, the current in the wire turns the wire one way in the magnetic field.)

  • @MrfixitRick wow!

  • doent that short out the battery?

  • @APACHEMAN747

Basically, yes, the heart wire is a short circuit for the battery. The more amperes through the wire, the greater the force pushing the wire around. The battery or wire will get warm sometimes. But if they get too hot, then something is not adjusted properly.

  • cant they use this idea in cars?

  • @katpiering123

This idea could be used in cars. However, to be efficient, it would require supercooled superconductors like used in the latest naval ships with twin 25,000 horsepower homopolar electric motors. Very expensive.

  • facking love Wolf Parade, send your step son a high five for me

  • who is your step son?

  • @BluesGuitarJam

Hadji is my step-son. He plays synth and theremin in the earlier Wolf Parade songs.

  • wow now i dont have to use a screw driver any more joke lol

  • Sad to say it, but if your son signed with Sub Pop, he no longer has the rights to give you permission to use the song. Welcome to "works for hire" - record labels are a bitch. Don't just get mad though, get even, that's my suggestion.

  • ITS SPINNING!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the solder isnt magnetic to the magnet(its a simple black magnet from rona) i bought x.x where can i get a neodymium magnet sir?

  • @noeleverblue

The solder won't be magnetic until it has decent amperage going through it. Also, the black magnet may not be conductive (then wrap it with copper or aluminum foil). It may be too weak.

    Get neodymium magnets:

1.) online from K&J Magnetics (link in the "more info" box), or other online source.

2.) from a shake-type flashlight, found at a WalMart or dollar store.

3.) 1/2 x 1/8 inch neodymium magnets are often available at a craft store or hardware store. Stack 'em 4 or 5 high.

  • @MrfixitRick Amperage?

  • @Vaspra54

The amperage varies from milliamps, up to 2 to 3 amps at about one volt.

  • @MrfixitRick No, why do you say amperage? Its current

  • @Vaspra54

Not sure if I understand your point.

From the dictionary, "Amperage: The strength of an electric current expressed in amperes."

So, one could say "The strength of the electric current varies from milliamps, up to 2 to 3 amps at about one volt."

    Is that better?

  • can i use a solder wire ?

  • @noeleverblue

Solder will work; I just tried it ;)

    However, solder deforms easily.

And it will melt if it gets too hot.

And the lead is poisonous to handle.

  • @MrfixitRick thank you. ill be using it in my science project. i'd be careful though.

  • a la verga esa cosa gira sola !!! o_0

  • Nice. This is one of the best homopolar motor videos availible. Very smooth.

  • @chuvak1

    Thank-you for the wonderful comment!

  • The guy just to do it with copper wire ??????

  • @MrKratoos

Copper wire, battery, magnet. That's all!

  • goooooooooooooooood

  • Thanks

  • All that happens is the battery warms up and the copper wire does to. What should i do next

  • @Denoheatwave

Are you using a strong neodymium magnet? What size?

Is the battery magnetic ? (stick to the magnet well)

The heart with curved legs needs to have the legs adjusted with a very loose (i.e. not touching) contact with the magnet. Otherwise it will just sit and overheat.

  • kind i use silver plated copper wire?
