Labrie is sounding better and better now a'days. I hate to say it this way but: I think having Mike Portnoy leave is just the kind of kick in the ass that this band needs to reinvigorate them to being progressive again. Not just Dream Theater-y.
@GuillermoSmyser I feel EXACTLY the same way. I've felt like Mike's been pushing them to go heavier and heavier every album, and even more modern and more modern too.
I mean, the poser-death metal growls and blast beats in ANTR? What the hell, that's not Dream Theater... I think now that he's gone, the lyric rules he set up will probably die and John Myung can step back up to the plate I hope! He's one of my favorite musicians of all time, I hope he takes advantage of his position now!
@RaidonSama i can see what u mean about that, but really i dont think mike is the reason for their evolving sound its just a type of thing that happens when youve been playing together for twenty years, u cant just keep the same thing going forever
@jmiester25 yeah. they actually sound good here. not as strict as nowadays. labrie also sounds pretty good here unlike now when he sounds like a moldy piece of cheese when he sings live.i never really digged labries voice but even ill admit that hes worth listening to here
Dream Theater is so amazing. I don't think they could ever get enough credit. Why they aren't in the rock and roll hall of fame (or the HUMAN hall of fame) yet is a mystery to me.
Mike Portnoy is in the Hall of fame and that too the youngest drummer to achieve that title. Comparatively to all the others that achieved such a title.
0:50 - 2:30 is some of the best progressive music I've ever heard... STILL, after thousands of listens, the two solos and bridge to the last verse and outro get me completely engrossed. F'ing amazing music.

Portnoy was asucker since them...No wonder why Moore doesn't want to pplay on their special concerts...and no wonder why their last decent record was Train Of Thought.
don´t be so hard on them man they do what they can, and yeah train of thought is their last good record (excuse me dark eternal night but you´re only a song)
Nowadays they're pushing the limits of technical skill and still keeping it musical and beautiful. And if you don't like SDOIT and you think TOT was their last good album then you aren't using your ears proporly and I suggest you rip them off immediately.
i think those albums like soidt, falling into infinity or metropiolis 2 didn`t make the contribution that the oldest albums did that`s all (they`re too good). about tot i dont have a good reason, i just like it.
Actually Scenes From A Memory,Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance and all did make huge contributions Pick Up When Dream And Day Unite it's totally Prog/Neo Classical,Images And Words Progressive,Awake Progressive Rock/Metal,Falling In To Infinity Prog Rock/Melodic,Falling In To Infinity Rock/Prog,Scenes From A Memory Concept/Prog/Experimental,SDOIT Experimental with some classical harmonies/Prog,Train Of Thought Dark Bombastic Metal,Octavarium Modern/old DT,Systematic Chaos Technical/Metal,DT=PROG
If you look closely I am mentioning the type of genres they applied in every record they made. Which clearly shows their diversity of using different genres in every album they have one. Now that is truly a real Progressive band.
and let us not forget Black Clouds which was a melting pot of all their previous albums, aside from LaBrie's voice not being the same, but he did do a phenomenal job nontheless
I totally agree Labrie sounded great on Black Clouds And silver Linings you know if he uses now more of his middle range it's so beautiful rather than his higher range and yes Black Clouds and Silver Linings is certainly a melting pot and I loved it phenomenal record!
Wow! I've been a DT fan forever and loved this vid. Learning to Live is my fav Dt song but never seen it live. Are they even recording anymore? I've been out of the loop for a long time and kinda lost track. Last time I saw them was at the Moore Theater in Seattle in.....'95 maybe? '96? Not sure. Always thought Petrucci was one of the best, most innovative guitarists ever. You guys ever check out the instrumental stuff that John and John and Mike did as "liquid Tension Experiment"?
By far the best Dream Theater album and era.The magic was just there. So powerful, melodic, and uplifting! I still love Dream Theater...just wished they would get off of this sad, dark, angry, and evil kick. It is Dream Theater...not Nightmare Theater hehe.
funny...there's the twin peaks soundtrack at 5:33

Is this the one show where LaBrie didn't act like an idiot on stage the whole time?

Wrong hall of fame dude. You're talking modern drummers, Rock and Roll hall of fame is different.
