Necryte: Yeah, but it's still done PT's way...so it is different, too, from Dogs. Man, I used to walk my paper route when I was 13 carrying my cassette player around with me so I could listen to Animals while I worked... (sigh)
I remember a friend on IMEEM (yeah remember IMEEM?..LOL) turned me onto PT with this song..it's been a very incredible exploration of this band ever since..slowly though, as I love many genre's and countless bands but still finding more an more as Time goes by...
I love being able to pinpoint influences in music, this of course reeks of pink floyd, but it also has a hint of zeppelin to the guitar at 2:46ish. another reason to love porcupine tree
Porcupine Tree, Steve Hillage Band, Gong, Ozric TenTacles, Symphony X, Dream Theater, Hawkwind, Riverside rules an those bands is what I call rock n roll music, not shitty slipknot or Lady Gaga.
All this fighting about genre is stupid, personally I'd say Alternative or maybe go as far as Alternative Metal but it doesn't fucking matter. At all!
@Necryte OK, I fucking did. I hear the similarity in the acoustic guitar sound and first chord Wilson uses - and that's about it. This song's way different... and IMO, a lot more interesting across its full duration.
It really sounds like Dogs from Pink Floyd's "Animals". I'm really surprised of this knowing the huge musical culture of Wilson. Was it done on purpose?
@Funguy42O definitely sounds like something off the Animals album. I can't remember which sound but it's definitely influenced. It's awesome, though, cuz they still took an idea n made their own thing out of it. S'all good by me. =]
All this attempt at genre classification is stupid. It all comes down to you either like the music or you don't. It moves you it it doesn't. You get it, or you don't.
Personally PT music moves me, I like it, and I get it. :)
and as it usually is with debates of this nature, i'd like to point out that i do listen to PT aswell so im not pointing fingers to anything specific. its the big pictures that are fighting in this topc
Nací en el ´67 El año del Sgt. Pepper (sargento pimienta) Y tienes experiencia?

@Physk "Pop Idol" is an extreme example on which I totally agree.
But Pop=Popular. Good music is "unpopular"? Wilson hates extreme driftings (Pop Idol), but he eventually doesn't generalize, that's too easy.
I just wish people looked for much more different things in music before lecturing... I used to be quite intolerant too but I found many great things in pop and even commercial music.
Sound of muzak? Hum... i have 11 PT albums, 2 Blackfield albums, 1 solo album... I know Wilson ;-)
@Aroun88 Good to hear that someone understands his philosophies on music, and on music in general. He is spot on when it comes to contemporary music. I used to be a pretentious metal head searching for the perfect band that will last a lifetime, I stumbled upon PT, and instantly knew this is the band for all time. Since then I have been exploring other genres because PT has opened me up so much more.

@somberlight I don't really understand why you answer me that...
In my comment, I "fight" the so called music lovers always lecturing everybody for very questionable and stupidly idealistic reasons... I "fight" easy confusions like thinking "metal music means anti-pop good music" or "being in the system means making crappy music".
There are many examples of concessions you make in life that don't question what you are. Your last sentence lacks subtlety I think...
@Aroun88, just another view, i think. sry if it was offensive or anything. i do agree with you on the lecturing part; the whole pop vs everything else thing IS completely false, or misguided at least. just because a band succeeds doesnt make it shit. on the one hit wonder point, i personally blame the whole instant gratification system (idols et al). they're pushing a constant stream of plastique formulated bullshit to market to make a quick buck, when they could support bands like PT.
@Aroun88.. eh. just noticed im trying to compress a book's worth of thoughts into 429 letters, failing badly. if i sound incoherent in some way, pm and i'll explain my stance in full. no rush or anything.
Being against a young so called singer and symbol of stringpulling means rather many kinds of music... It also means you write the same things as millions of sheeps on Youtube.
Pro-Bieber Sheeps VS Anti-Bieber Sheeps? You've made your choice... cheers...
@Aroun88 It has pop influences only in the sense that it's written to be catchy. A lot of newer pop music sounds awful to me, but I'm not the blind metalhead out there saying "FUCK THE MAINSTREAM". I do understand that there are pop influences in a lot of progressive music that I listen to, though. But If I listen to it and I like it, I like it.
@edgroove7 A few I enjoy - Death Cab for Cutie, Keane, Blackfield, Starflyer 59, Rooney, The Radio Dept., Mute Math, Lush, Gorillaz, Fastball, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, The Cars, The Police, America, Crosby Stills and Nash, Air, Phoenix, Simply Red, etc etc etc. I guess some of those quality as pop rock, not strictly pop. But you get the idea.
@pineapplepeanuts I would agree some of those are very talented with the exception of a few IMHO ,but they're not true pop groups many of them are underground folksy type with an alt edge to them
@pineapplepeanuts I'm still right though overall and ok I give you points on liking bands with actual talent, you have a wide ranging taste . I know my music, but cheers either way!
@edgroove7 You can split hairs over labels, but the truth is that many of the groups I named are very pop. If your definition of pop doesn't extend beyond Britney Spears and Madonna, maybe you need to stop trying to categorize every single piece of music. By the way - what bands were you referring to as "underground folksy?" Just out of curiosity. The only bands that even come close to folk are probably America and CSN, and they are far from underground.
@pineapplepeanuts No offence pal,but you're not the only one who knows music .Having been a professional drummer and a long time song-writer who has written 'on demand',I too have a vast taste in music. DCFC and counting crows both have 'folksy' elements in some of their song structure and acoustic guitar phrasing,if you can't hear that, then I'm afraid you don't know music as well as you think. As far as categorizing music, when I hear something I know from where it came and who influenced it
@edgroove7 Don't care about your credentials and neither did I question them, so stop talking about yourself. I'm just questioning what you define as pop music because I think you're missing the forest through the trees. I guess Britney Spears is electronica and the Beatles are britrock alternative or something, right? Missing the point, we are.
@Aroun88 well shit man, i sure as hell hope this modern metal isnt the already mainstream redundant shit they call distrubed and slipknot, i think that if music genres are commercialized to much, some might say like pop, the bands stop making new sounds, start making what they know the people WILL like, this goes for all music.
i agree with what you said, i just don't think commercialization is the best thing that has happend to humanity.
it used to be metal and nothing but, but this band beat that to the ground, i wont say steven wilson is the best lyrics writer ever cuz its an oppinion, but......lyrics never ment somuch to me
my god, this bands music is phenominal! i can understand why lots of people don't listen to it tho. It truly takes a superior awareness to properly enjoy this music. Unlike that mainstream media bullshit, all dry and dubbed down, listened to by mental slaves. Oh well, thats how life rolls! music, energy, spirit, emotion, passion, and people are extremly important things to reflect upon!
Saw the guys a couple of months ago, completely blew me away!! Amazing live sound and so much talent! If you ever get the chance, definitely go see them!
I could tell why the great mikael alkerfeldt listens to this band and alot of influnce is from this band this band could be one the most talented bands i heard except for opeth lol
@tubybubi yeah that 'whole cd is one song' is a tad pretentious by Steven Wilson. The Sky move Sideways album is more like one song than the Incident will ever be.
Anyway, Time Flies definitely is the most accessible song on the album but it was the beautifully long bridge that is the essence of the song. It's a point where you can enter a trance or a day dream and the moment the song kicks back in you wonder where the time went. Beautiful.
@eatthefish Why do you want drum tabs. just play it as your own version. even with the tabs you wont get it 100%. i think its better to learn it by ear and to have your own take on it. but its just my opinion
I had never listened to PT before seeing them live last year, and although that entire show was beyond words and left a huge impression, this song in particular sounded almost well, perfect? Top to bottom, to my ears anyways they are the best sounding live band I've ever heard.
Well, i started listening to Porcupine Tree only 2 years ago, with a break of one year, which i spent in Africa and i was only able to listen to "Fear of a blank planet".
After arriving hear again i listened to this song and its amazing.
Just bought some other CD's and I realised that "Fear of a blank planet" isnt enough, to explore the geniousity and creativity of this band.
I called "Opeth" my favorite band before, but now... ;)
Progressive Rock isnt only music, its experience..
@XtremeJunkie hey, I also thought Opeth was the only top band in my list... but now :-D I share your opinions :-) Im quite interested in what you did in Africa... :-)
GREAT song; Extremely intelligent music...Wow, this is my first exposure to Steve Wilson. Amazing song writer! And I've been up all night listening to him. It's now 5:03 am. I stopped listening to rock in the mid 90's, and moved straight over to jazz while still in my 20's. So I missed quite a bit of really good music. Now, I'm 42. Where the HELL have I been??? Buried knee deep in John Coltrane solos I guess...lol
@SnakeEater223 They've their own identity and their own sound but you can hear that Wilson has spent his childhood with the Floyd and his very inspired by them !
@ddrum0106 Best drummer alive? Come on....don't formulate a biased opinion based on how awesome PT is. That is a seat reserved for Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy.
@thepalmetto mike portnoy? seriously? neil peart is an awesome drummer (i commented on him in the october 2009 issue of modern drummer) and in my opinion made Rush one of the most progressive bands of their era. Im saying that right now (bands that are actually progressing in the music industry) Gavin Harrison (probably being one of the most well rounded drummers today) is, in my opinion, the best drummer of this genre alive. Mike Portnoy hasn't done anything new or exciting since Awake.
@ddrum0106 Maybe Portnoy doesn't tickle your fancy, but he is one of the greats whether you like it or not. And I believe your original comment was, "best drummer alive" not "best drummer among bands actually progressing in the music industry." Don't try to flip the script all the sudden!
@thadippa22 OMFG I WANT TO SEE THAT CONCERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE BOTH BANDS THEY ARE SOME OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry got excited xD) but seriously i want to see that concert!!!! 2 heavily overlooked bands with alot of talent
@martind6838 Agree with you there ok.Don't know how Wilson manages to work and write on all his projects at the one time. Imagine what he could do if he would just concentrate on PT.....probably the best music ever heard !!
I shed a tear. What a wonderful work of art (song and video).

Hello there fellow metalheads
Instead of a Metal rebellion i propose a new plan
1. Don't bash other metal artists, we need to unite. We cant fight against pop music if we arent even together
2. Watch more and other metal videos to get it to the top of the youtube vid list
3. Instead of bashing pop, promote metal with logical reasons, not just "METAL RULES"
If you like this idea, thumbs it up JUST so people can see it, and also spread it around if you like this idea

@Aroun88 well shit man, i sure as hell hope this modern metal isnt the already mainstream redundant shit they call distrubed and slipknot, i think that if music genres are commercialized to much, some might say like pop, the bands stop making new sounds, start making what they know the people WILL like, this goes for all music.
i agree with what you said, i just don't think commercialization is the best thing that has happend to humanity.

it used to be metal and nothing but, but this band beat that to the ground, i wont say steven wilson is the best lyrics writer ever cuz its an oppinion, but......lyrics never ment somuch to me
o8MetalHead8o 1 year ago
my god, this bands music is phenominal! i can understand why lots of people don't listen to it tho.

ARgh no, not the beautiful interlude! Why did it had to go?!
BaileysBeads 1 year ago
@BaileysBeads
It's the commercial video version. Probably it would have been too long and too progressive for the average listener?
I prefer the 11:40 album version, too.
Besides that the whole CD should be seen as one song. That's why the tracks on CD 1 have those roman numbers.
tubybubi 1 year ago
@tubybubi yeah that 'whole cd is one song' is a tad pretentious by Steven Wilson. The Sky move Sideways album is more like one song than the Incident will ever be.
Anyway, Time Flies definitely is the most accessible song on the album but it was the beautifully long bridge that is the essence of the song. It's a point where you can enter a trance or a day dream and the moment the song kicks back in you wonder where the time went. Beautiful.

Hey is there any drum tabs/notation for this?
eatthefish 1 year ago
@eatthefish Why do you want drum tabs. just play it as your own version. even with the tabs you wont get it 100%. i think its better to learn it by ear and to have your own take on it. but its just my opinion

nico570 1 year ago
I had never listened to PT before seeing them live last year, and although that entire show was beyond words and left a huge impression, this song in particular sounded almost well, perfect? Top to bottom, to my ears anyways they are the best sounding live band I've ever heard.
NorthLight68 1 year ago
Well, i started listening to Porcupine Tree only 2 years ago, with a break of one year, which i spent in Africa and i was only able to listen to "Fear of a blank planet".
After arriving hear again i listened to this song and its amazing.
Just bought some other CD's and I realised that "Fear of a blank planet" isnt enough, to explore the geniousity and creativity of this band.
I called "Opeth" my favorite band before, but now... ;)
Progressive Rock isnt only music, its experience..
XtremeJunkie 1 year ago
@XtremeJunkie its more than that, it's art.

HOPEFULLY OPENING FOR THESE GUYS IN CT WHEN THEY COME TO CT! !! they are SO good ughghg Gavin Harrison is the best drummer alive
ddrum0106 1 year ago
@ddrum0106 Best drummer alive? Come on....don't formulate a biased opinion based on how awesome PT is. That is a seat reserved for Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy.
thepalmetto 1 year ago
@thepalmetto mike portnoy? seriously? neil peart is an awesome drummer (i commented on him in the october 2009 issue of modern drummer) and in my opinion made Rush one of the most progressive bands of their era. Im saying that right now (bands that are actually progressing in the music industry) Gavin Harrison (probably being one of the most well rounded drummers today) is, in my opinion, the best drummer of this genre alive. Mike Portnoy hasn't done anything new or exciting since Awake.
ddrum0106 1 year ago
@ddrum0106 Maybe Portnoy doesn't tickle your fancy, but he is one of the greats whether you like it or not. And I believe your original comment was, "best drummer alive" not "best drummer among bands actually progressing in the music industry." Don't try to flip the script all the sudden!

martind6838 1 year ago
@martind6838 Agree with you there ok.Don't know how Wilson manages to work and write on all his projects at the one time. Imagine what he could do if he would just concentrate on PT.....probably the best music ever heard !!
