  • damn, good performance

  • Dont get me wrong I love Johnny Cash but its a damn shame that Cash version of Hurt is more remebered than Renzors and Renzors is the better version and aslo was the first to perform it

  • How in the hell did this guy manage to write this song?? Listened to his other songs and just can't believe it...most have been a one time lucky shot. Happy Cash sang it, it's a beutiful song

  • the cash version is good, but i think the original is much better still

  • did i just watch a fuckng pilsbury commercial prior to NIN ? wtf ???

  • I will admit that as a stand-alone song, Cash's version has a bigger impact.

But if you listen to The Downward Spiral by NIN, with Hurt being the final track, it will hit you like a fucking speeding train.

  • I'll look for The Downward Spiral immediate, thanks for the rec

  • I wonder if I could somehow get a copy of the raw visuals projected...

  • OMFG!!!

    I love this Band!!!

    powerful!!!

  • Creds to Trent Reznor for writing the song. But to be honest I prefer Johnny Cash's version. Even though this is also good, it doesn't those shivers down my spine that JC's does.

  • I think Cashs version is better personally, but because people say that it doesn't mean they are disrespecting the writers of the song.

  • Yeah, that's like Bob Dylan songs. Every cover is better than Dylan!

    I like both versions!

  • are you kidding me? there have been a handful of good covers of dylan songs, i'll give you that. but dylan is...DYLAN!

i'm sorry sir but i must respectfully say that while you are entitled to your opinion it's wrong.

  • look, douchebag, they didn't just "do it first", they fucking WROTE it.

i like johnny cash, a lot, and i like his version of it. he did make it his, it became a different song. and thats cool. but give a little respect the artists responsible for the songs fucking existence.

  • word.

  • This song really relates to cash I don't care what you say. They may of did it first but Cash made it his own.

  • hmm,, toda la Rola y letra es una Delicia- pero en la parte del min. 4:20 me gusta mas y la que siempre la tengo en mente

  • both versions are great, both videos very symbolic and tells many different stories, depending on whats going on in your life. Trent's I believe was coming off drugs, and Johnny's was he was dying wanted to tell his story as well. I love the end of this video, the animal coming back to life at the end to me is new life, a fresh start. ok my rant is over!

musically they are both great, but alot of people will not agree as everyone has different music taste

  • 1:00 - 1:22 = my favorite part, altough the whole video is pretty much my favorite part

  • Wow good song how ever I as well think that Johnny cash is much more sad.

  • Both versions are beautiful

  • This song reminds me of the effects of alcohol on a human being.

  • Maggots devouring a coyote is a pretty powerful bit of insight as to what WILL happen to the structure of our country...time to start taking government officials OUT of office and replacing them with people who really make the country work! Like it or not, its just the only way we can save ourselves

  • @sirtom68

This song and video isn't about countries !

  • that's the most retarded thing Ive ever heard T-T

  • i love nine inch nails, and johnny cash, you cant say cash's versions is shit when even trent reznor said he cried the first time he heard cash play it because johnny cash captured the meaning of the song perfectly!!

  • so true ^_^

  • Trent is a phenomenon - this is a song that has helped me through many a bad spot

  • this is original version my friend, Cash covered it? Please don't discuss music taste, it's something different in all of us and something you just have to learn how to respect. Imagine me saying "Mozart is better than Cash!". Where would that get us, huh?

  • 4:22 is the same video clip in Taking Back Sunday-make damn sure

  • Yes every know Johnny covered the song what about it? He just moved the words and it lost its nature of meaning instead of crown of shit (satan)he says crown of thorns(Jesus) instead of Lions chair he says Liars lost the whole meaning so how could you say its better give me a break if you want to see Johnnys version just look to the right of your screen and click on it.

  • fucking powerful.

    trent is brilliant.

    that is all.

  • If you can pause it on just before 2:20 you will see a drawing of the serpent talkingto Eve in the Garden...

  • I think the best part of the music is the beauty of the symbolic lerix of how the most beautifull angel fell and deveived man in the form of serpent and asks "what have I become" "I where this crown of shit" notice the closing line interesting...Trents musics are usually also written in sybolic spiritual nature. Johnny was a great artist but trent is a fucking Genious.

  • thats right filmed here in nebraska

  • NIN is not emo dipsh!t. Industrial yes, emo no.

  • That opening dissonant b minor flat 5th chord makes this better than Johnny Cash's version. He just uses a regular minor chord.

  • Johnny Cash's version is great, but the fact remains that it's a cover from a NIN's song, so if you truly believe that Johnny Cash is a genius then you also have to respect NIN, just as Cash did.

Can't we all just agree that it's an awesome song, no matter who sings it?

  • Banido, that's too logical for people on the internet to understand and accept.

  • Agree

  • It's a awesome song if Cash or Trent sings it..

  • Touche!

  • the SONG IS REALLY GOOD...MORE THAN THAT PERFECT..and johnny like trent deserve the word artist, every letter of it...both interpreted it in their own ways...you get different emotions. Trent is younger and you fell the anger( its simpler to receive) and Johnnys version is more conciliated ( almost like he gave up...moved one step backwards, which is a sign of maturity ). now i like the nin version more....but maybe when I grow older Johnny's will be more my thing...

  • @dextear & vanwieden93

johnny cash's version was more popular when it came out. this is because the NIN version is to dark for the masses in general to accept. but i totally agree that fame has nothing to do with talent, fame has to do with marketability. none of my favorite artists are mainstream (except some classic rock artists like Led Zeppelin). maybe its cause i prefer non watered down crap because i live in the real world and feel emotions that are more dark than anything Disney can show

  • Best song of NIN. great video, happiness in darkness

  • holy shit starting at 4:30 how the water ripples turn into the decomposed fox... and the backwards time lapse of the decomposition process man thats incredible...

  • very symbolic vid

  • I love that Johnny Cash covered this song-partly because the video was heart-wrenchingly good and the cover was good-but also it brought into light the beauty of Trent Reznor's writing and musical ability. Unfortunately a lot of people who don't like NIN view him as some early form of angry Emo-but his music is gripping and profound in my opinion!

  • Everyone has to be so fucking opinionated about it though. That's the problem with cover version. In my opinion, Trent's version is better. It gives off a more personal feel. Trent was into some serious drugs when he wrote this. I'm not trying to take anything away from The Man though. Cash did a great cover. It's just not as good as Trent's.

  • I agree and I really hate when people think that Johnny Cash wrote it. That annoys me even more.

  • this is originally by NIN.. people are stupis johnny cash covered it.. look at the entire album all of the songs on johnny cashs album are covers.. Desperado, personal jesus..

  • Cash made few albuns with Covers ( Far way Better than original ), but he have even more albuns made with original Songs -.-"

  • yup.. but his last album ''Cash'' the pone he had before he died had all covers on it.. inluding ''hurt''

  • hey who wrote this song first?

great song by the way, i didnt know NIN sang it also.

  • NIN wrote it first then Johnny cash covered it.

  • Oh.....MY....GOD! who are these people that didnt know NIN did Hurt first....

  • I was there..94' Vancouver, The Forum. The best concert of my life.

  • johnny cash has a better version

  • that's a lie!they are well-known in europe!this summer n.i.n. were in Greece where they have a huge fanclub!just because u dont know them doesnt mean they are unknown!!!!!!

  • no, the reason it Trent Reznor isnt known well in Europe is becasue most people there are too stupid to appreaciate genius

  • trent reznor is well known in europe, let me guess you're american?

  • I'm from Poland, where Trent and NiN is well knonw. For some reason in believe in Czech and Slovakia, also other nearby...

But what is here to discuss, when 99% don't know if Europe is a country, or a island In north moon. And they believe, that people from Europe lives in castles and ride horses.

  • BUT it would be cool if you lived in castles and rode horses everwhere......think about it.

  • LOL

  • You suck...

It's so easy to cover someone song

It is so hard to imagine and write song.

That's why there is an artist and performer.

Johny Cash in just THIS case is performer.

    And You are idiot

  • it's you are an idiot, not you are idiot, IDIOT

  • Breathe

  • youre totally right, their a bunch of emo basterds, that only can excist in the rotten fantasy's of a bunch of american crap emo's, johnny cash is the best, its the greattest honor an artist can get, if someone better and older than you makes your song better and famous

  • man i cant believe all the shit that comes from your mind... johny would've never done a cover of this song if he didn't think its good so shut the fuck up cause i'm pretty sure cash had wayyyyy better music taste than you

  • yesssssss in everyway Johny was so much better

  • For the record, johnny cash DID cover this song

  • That fox thing is off true blood, and I agree Johnny Cash's version is alot better.

  • boo cash is better <3 but this is good i think Cash's Version has more feeling into it

  • Someone needs to shoot you Victute..

But anyways I think I like the NIN original better.. but I still really dig Cash's version... I like to play this song on my guitar and sing it, and I play both versions now.. because they are both good..

  • haahahahah what a dumbass!!!!NIN original

  • Johnny Cash covered Hurt. Not the other way around. Look it up if you don't believe me.

  • YOu sir are a fucking idiot. Learn about something before you make your self look stupid. This was made Almost a decade before Cash even covered it.

    This is Trent's song.

  • johnny cash covered it dumbass, this is a nails song

  • This is the most powerful video/song i've ever seen/heard.

  • this sucks!

cash's version of the song is much better!

HE made the song a masterpiece!

  • @vanweiden93 well that kinda is a lie, if it wasnt amazin, johnny wouldnt have looked into it.

  • It was Johnny Cash's producer Rick Rubin that got him into it. Rick Rubin was in his "make bands do other bands' covers that's completely in a different genre". Hurt was one of them. Not saying it wasn't amazing already. Just sayin'.

  • the only reason he looked into it was becouse the song is about drug addiction (forgive me spelling) If it is so amazing why did he then change it? Into the greatest song of all time baby!

  • @vanweiden93, No, just, false. He kinda didn't, i mean, he kinda didn't you know 'change' it, he just covered it Thats all Did he write the lyrics? No. Soooo..... You kinda fail. Yea...

  • what ever it was trent's honer to have jonny cash make a cover of his unknown song! jonny made trent more famous if anything! kinda!

well if you like this song better then jonny's whatever! we aviusly don't have the same taste in music. forgive my bad spelling! cheers mate...

  • ....Wrong.... Most people were too lazy to actually look up Jonny's source material. He didn't make him more famous, and further, fame isn't what Art is about.

  • Thank you dextear! Thank you, someone understands, jeez

  • @Dextear

art becoume's famouse if it is good and the fact that jonny's version is more famouse well what does that tell oss?

  • 1: Art does NOT become famous because it is good. Fame is a matter of popularity at the moment by the masses. These are the same masses that watch hours of TV every day.

2: Jonny Cash AND Trent have been forgotten since then. Further, when was Jonny's cover more famous than Trent's?

  • Oh I don't know when jonny's version was more famous then trent's!?!?!why don't we look at the veiw's of there song's and see! shall we! IDIOT!

Naw your not an idiot but look anyway, jonny has abou ten times more view's! sorry for being so harch

  • You youtubers be trolls trolling trolls... any australians by chance? i HEAR YOU CAN'T GET 4CHAN OVER THERE SO YOU TROLL YOUTUBE HAHA. This song is cool. Laters, going to make music with real people now! i suggest you guys rethink what your doing and do something fun today ;)

  • zajebista piosenka.

  • I'm pretty sure Rob Sheridan wasn't working with NIN back when this was made. But go ahead and mislabel it, Universal. Well done.

  • I have always loved this song! I am so glad the radio is playing this one again. I can't stand the sound of Cash's voice. NIN puts on a much more emotional performance. (My opinion, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.)

  • Okay. You're officially infinitely retarded than any other youtuber I've ever come across. Thus, I urge YOU (JUST you) not to take any vaccines. This means you die of stupidity and are removed from the gene pool. I demand that you never, EVER have children. If you even think of reproducing, I'll synthesize the Ebola virus and transfer it to your body telepathically. I don't have that power, but my rage when I find out you reproduced will instantly give me that power.

You, sir, are a true 'tard.

  • AntiVaccine is right-ish... the h1n1 vaccine was not produced properly, and may just cause a harsh side effect, not exactly genocidal. But it's barely on topical ... and he's not being very specific, so yeah, he's a dumbass. But just because the government pushes it, doesn't make it good. Or properly made.

  • I find it funny that he thinks what it contains makes it dangerous, when the amounts of the dangerous contents are so fucking minute that you could take 10 vaccines and still have no ill effect from the preservatives in it. Not to mention that the mercury is bonded to other things to make a preservative, and thus doesn't have the same properties as it does in its pure form. It's like saying table salt will kill you because it has Chlorine in it..

  • This is the first time I've seen this and it is epic. Don't compare the Johnny cash version. That was used for a different reason by a man who felt it was right for his situation - he was dying. The NIN performance is one of the best things I've ever seen and I love Johnny Cash!!!I will definetly check these guys out. Brilliant!!

  • i think you are all missing the point.johhny cash did make this song his own because of the raw emotion of describing his turbulent life and how he felt after the sudden death afew months earlier of his wife.this was the ultimate performance of a by then broken man!

  • Id give up the arguement. Most people dont get "higher thinking". They just dont understand the meaning of the song. Just how well it personifies Johnny's life. Though Trent made the song, Its Johnny's. (For the record im a huge NIN fan. Its just a fact people. That much raw emotion cant be denied)

  • Anyone who really believes that Cash made a better version is entitled to their opinion. My opinion however is that the original is much more heart-felt and conveys the emotion a bit better. Cash's version undoubtedly gained more attention due to the timing of it's release being so close to his death.

  • Yeah this song is an original from NIN , Reznor was actually angry at first when he heard cash covered it , but when he saw the video en heard the song he wasn't angry anymore because cash made it his own and interpret it his way.. This is a very personal song for reznor

  • this song realy shows the pain of addiction and how hard it is to get out if it

  • What an honor it would be for a far younger artist to be covered by a legend like Johnny Cash. This really says something about the talent Reznor has.

  • @PraGCarboN

    johnny cash covered them!

  • Oh really this is a direct quote from Trevor Reznor

Reznor still occasionally refers to "Hurt" as "a song that isn't mine anymore."

  • "Anymore" so he claimed it once was his. Dude, cash covered him. Don't be so annoyingly stubborn about it.

  • @kraeckelium, ok listen dumbass, PraGCarboN said is wat Reznor said. "a song that isn't mine ANYMORE" he was saying cash did i cover so good that he feels like it doesn't belong to him ANYMORE.

  • @666Brokenpenis999

I rape your mother every single day in the ass

  • @kraeckelium i love the fact that u couldnt thnk of anythng else except an insult

  • ...every single day...

  • @PraGCarboN

u have just owned yourself he's basically saying johnny cash made it his own and he doesn't class it as his song any more

  • No. Johnny cash covered them. Nine inch nails wrote it in the 80s. Cash covered just a few years ago.

You should really get your shit together before you post.

  • HAHA! Listen, kid. If you're taking that as any sort of evidence, you're stupider than I thought. Try considering the last word of that quote. It means that he feels it used to be his. He probably said that because Cash's version is much more popular nowadays. Hell, even I knew of Cash's cover before the original. Honestly, you're an idiot. The performance in this very video is before Johnny's cover for fuck's sake.

  • What are you laughing at its fact Trevor Reznor may have wrote the song but Cash REVOLUTIONIZED it so dont go calling people dumb when you dont know what im talking about

  • No. Your exact words were "they covered johnny cash". Therefore, you ARE an idiot. Also, his name is Trent; not Trevor. You couldn't be more wrong about anything involving this band or this song. Cash did not revolutionize it. He just gave it a richer sound. That's about it.

You, sir, haven't a clue of what you're talking about. Go suck a dick.

  • Umm h actually did revolutioize it the only other people who would have heard about it is stupid FAN-BOYS who know every single detail about the band your no other different from a groupie go take it in the ass from Trevor reznor

    FAGGOT

  • Haha, awesome. Now I get to use my sexuality against you. I'm bi, you idiot. So taking it up the ass from TRENT Reznor would be my pleasure. Also, I'm not actually very big into NIN. I just know a few people who are.

And gaining a song popularity doesn't mean it was revolutionized. That's like calling shit bands like Metro Station revolutionary just because they're popular right now. That's like saying Harry Potter was revolutionized because it got turned into a movie. That's fucking retarded.

  • no johny cash coverd them but did it alot beter

  • i prefer the guitar in this

  • i think this song is very personal to both trent reznor and johnny cash

  • deep

  • this song has helped me come to terms with a lots of shit Ive been dealt with in my life , it reads my heart ,life is a test ,ty trent for the outlet

  • if you did drugs then you dealt it yself

  • Great song, all the pain in his vocals, and the video... just fantastic.

  • you know that if you like the song because it relates to there life. this is just a scam to make u like it , you think that it has a meaning and it meant alot to the singer. all of trents song make him sound depressed but he happy living with who ever he is dating or married to. this is all about money. nin version is still better

  • if you see the videos is humanity who sings this song to earth.

  • awesome song, you know its great when johnny cash covers it.

  • fuck meth ...

  • FUCK THE ADS

  • I finally understand this song to it's truest form

  • This is all right, but I just really gotta say, I prefer cash's cover. I mean, he just poored in a real, full life of pain and regrets, as he looked death in the face, and you can really feel it. this original version has some of that too, but they're just a little too young to have that lifetime of regrets that Cash did.they have a future, cash died shortly after doing his, and you can really feel it.

  • thats a fair statement but just think the amount of shit going through trents life when he WROTE this song. when u think back on the shit that must have been going through his head when he wrote this i think it gives it a deeper meaning and more feeling. my opinion though :)

  • but I find it interesting how some covers overcome the originals in the eye's of most. like few really remember that Bob dylan did all along the watchtower before Jimi.

  • looks very similar to a crass gig

  • awesome band and an awesome song equally awesome cover by the legend that is johnny cash. :)

  • to zack and others lol funny i know u may not know this but but johnny cash took this song from Nine inch nails it described his life so good thats why he took it from NIN i like both the songs but johnny cashes version wins by a long shot dont dis nine inch nails they are a awesome band but i like johnny cash better though

  • no way man... i know what you mean but nine inch nails have done such a better version.... i aint dissin u. just my opinion! this song is like it was written for me an it means alot to me!!!

  • nine inch nails is a bunch of pussy ass faggots. Go cry in your closets and cut your emo self. spoiling good music, they should be ashamed. Poor Johnny's turning in his grave.

  • mate... i aint no emo an i like NIN...there fucking awsome! just coz i like it i dont cut myself an i aint an emo! this song makes me feel so alive... why listen to it if you dont like it?

  • It's hard for me to sense sarcasm on computers, so I apologize in advance if your post was using it, but Johnny Cash liked this "pussy ass faggot" music so much that he covered it. Trent Rezner did the song first.

And why is it that when trent rezner sings about drug abuse and pain its "emo", and when Johnny Cash sings about drug abuse and pain it's not? I'm not emo at all and I like both versions a lot, it's just good music.

  • Trent, Johnny...who cares....the song speaks to the conscious of us all...we have all 'hurt' someone (or ourselves) in one way or another.

  • Jesus you're all still talkin about who made the video first? Trent Reznor did you can research it. Both versions have the same lyrics except a few words changed. Johnny picked this song from a list of songs because he liked it a lot. Both versions are equally good. Kiss my ass.

  • haha i cant spell

  • I saw this videos live in concert in 1995. Amazing. Trent sings for my soul.

  • I like both. I mean trent did write the song. I love cash but I like nin too.

  • This is the first piece of art to make me actually feel anything in a long time.

  • I love JC but this version is the truth.

  • OMG SHUT THE FUCK UP EVERYONE BOTH VERSIONs ARE AWESOME

  • here here. Both artists found an equal point in the songs to relate to. They both wrote from the heart. Regardless of what their own feelings were, their lives were, their state of minds were at the time. The both thought that the lyrics and the message they thought the song conveyed were what they felt inside

Stop saying one is better than the other. *sigh* Just know the song, know the feeling it gives you to hear it. If you don't get anything out of the song, move on to the next, that is all.

  • @Kardall: Nuff' Said.

  • fuck you faggots. trent reznors version is way fucking better. this is not a JC song im sorry. so stfu with you dumb asses

  • I see what it is, your canadian, so maybe it was 2000 for you, here in the states it was well before 1980. takes a long time for things to get way up in the tundra aye?

  • lmfao emo has been around well before i was, what are you 12 to think that?

  • cash's version is better because its not emo, its dry and bleak and hopeless, just like it should be.

  • the reason cashes version is better is becuase he went through just as many hard times as trent. Not only that but cashes true reason for covering the song was becuase of the death of his wife. He sang with passion as a last testament to his love for her and the wrongs he commited to everyone he knew..... I personally believe the guy died from a broken heart considering the fact that he died 4 months after his wife.

  • she was in the video - she hadn't died by the time he decided to cover this song.

  • I heard this song on KROQ but i didn't know the name. I was riding in my car and again it popped up, i just memorized some verses, put them in google and....WALA!! Very hunting song with so much emotion.

  • haha i came here after watching trent rezor on PETA telling people not to wear fur. cool.

This music is waay boring though go get some clapton.

  • this might be boring but listen to some other songs this is a lullabye

  • What's this crap about Cash's version having more feeling in it? Give me a break. If you can't hear the anguish and despair in Reznor's voice then you must be tone-deaf.

They both have feeling in it. They're both terrific versions. Neither one is better, they're just different.

  • I think it's because Cash's version is more "friendly" to the majority? But I agree 100% with you...

  • everyone is obviously going to say cash's version is better cuz he is old and the song is basically bout a guy missed opurtunities in life, it sounds more touching cuz at the time he was near death..this is live .cash's version isnt..trent puts a lot more effort in it. cash is great but all he did was play a very basic song and sang calm and softly and its called beautiful.trent has a lot more effort and i think he has a lot more feeling..he rote the damn song so he knows how to play it right

  • i like johnny cashes version better because it seems like he has more feeling about actually being broken and hurting people he loved it just seems he can actually convince u that him or the person in the song is actually suffering and is regretting what he's done and wishing he could change it and that none of it would have happened and that the person hurt could have everything just as long as it would make things better.

  • nine inch nails are the best band in the world
