  • I had mine for 7yrs and still works as of 2012! never getting rid of it. I kept it at my grandparents house

  • I`m Backing BETAMAX It`s the future!

  • i love vcr because some dvd players don't save your place. A VCR always does.

  • Comment removed

  • Does it have S-Video?

  • I just started using VHS again after a record 7 ½ year hiatus. And I'll get S-VHS in preparation for recording Freeview - to make the original brilliance and sharpness come thro------- PSA: Jack just used EMTEC's America slogan--------ugh play after play after play.

  • I remember watching this live, just before he started recording he screamed "I GOT A FUCKIN' VCR!". It was hilarious.

  • I love VHS. I use 'em all the time.

  • Yes I still use a VCR to record shows from the TV. I think it's much more better than a DVD Recorder. I own 9 VCR's and 2 DVD/VCR Combo Recorders. I have over 2000 VHS tapes recorder with TV Shows from the 80's and 90's. This is cool because I have a lot of TV Shows recorded on tapes that never made it out on DVD.

  • WILL THIS WORK ON MAC WITH I MOVIE?

  • Back in nine teen eighty whoorr...........I'm old enough to remember that year!!

  • Its easy to transfer VHS to DVD, the hard part is finding a VCR and DVD player old enough to do it!

  • the ion tape2pc thing stinks i tried it and it ate 2 tapes i sent it back right away. Use an older professional vcr connected to your computer you'll get much better results. Its not even in hifi stereo. You should be using a pro svhs vcr to convert to the computer it stinks dont buy it. Same goes for the cassette tousb thing.

  • @stpworld Also, if you have older VHS tapes recorded in the 1970s and 80s, or tapes that were recorded on cheap monophonic VCRs, its a good idea to get an old monophonic VCR to play them. Hi-fi VCRs do not track mono cassettes correctly in most cases.

  • Long live the VHS. I still use them and current;y watchng one right now.

  • @AlecBoy006V2 cool

  • how come there is no machine that will transfer a VHS tape onto a DVD Combo. That would sell like hotcakes

  • @agodsend624 They do exist

  • sorry fella, you know nothing about about the format ,yes i have stuff on vcr/beta.why take the piss out this format ,its called history, you fucking fool.

  • my vhs rips the black tape like thing so i prefer dvd. i remember watching movies with that like puppet master but im not that old. brings childhood memorys back

  • i miss VHS tapes.

  • Now all Pre-Teens like Twilight

  • you are too young to speak with any authority on the subject of VCRs.

  • To this day, my parents doesn't really know what a DVR is & still record shows on a VCR. XD

  • 0:48 lol @ Blitzen "Beta Max are top loading".

FYI I have a FRONT-LOADING Betamax VCR that still works. It's a Sony SL-HF600 btw.

  • you gotta be kidding me. This isnt even funny. no offense.whats with the tile of the video? Are you still using a vcr for vhs tapes? id like to know what else would u for your vhs's other than a vcr? could of at least told ur very uneducated audience what vhs or vcr stands for. i give u 5 thumbs down which im sure most people would do too.u obvisouly love to watch urself more than the rest of the world.

  • I'm sticking to my zoetrope and wax cylinders.

  • I still got my vhs, dvhs, svhs vcrs and I'm still using them. Blu-ray sucks!

  • Will this copy macrovision protected tapes so you can back up your collection?

    OR

is this a retarded -you can only copy tapes you made yourself-VCR?

  • @AnalogRocks If you want to back up your macrovision protected tapes you should purchase the sima godvd device.

  • > implying you can use something else for VHS tapes

  • VHS has a whopping 330×480 resolution.

  • We watched a tape in school today and it was horrible, oh it was horrible!

  • I always hated it when my VCR would eat the tapes

  • 198(blugrh) FTW!

  • July 26, 1973 (1973-07-26) (age 37)

  • this make me feel so old...

  • VHS is so much better than DVD.

    DVD's always get scratched

  • VHS FOR THE F'n WIN

  • omg how young must your viewers be if they dont get what a vcr or a vhs is? xD

  • i have a dvd player and a PS3 (bluray) however vhs is fun to record shit and watch old movies

  • blu ray is pretty badass

  • vhs suxxorz laserdisc is the best. betamax is okay i guess

  • yea cuz everone uses and has betamaxs

  • Actually, your title is misleading - a VCR (which stands for Video Cassette Recorder) can also be a Betamax or 8MM.

  • nerd alert!

  • im use a VHS SONY absolutelly analogic for daily record cnn quest means business, wizards of waverly place, local tv news on zacatecas and another stuff ! LOL i love my vcr and i dont matter what you saying about it ! :)

  • im at this moment still using it ! in fact is just one channel on audio "MONO" and it really is bad ! LOL but works !! im a little bit poor okay ? but you dont have idea of how is my life so,, bye

  • VHS all the way.

I bought a Sanyo VWM-710 at a thrift store, because my old Mitsubishi HS-U448 kicked the bucket 3 years ago. Man I wish I had my old VCR again. My VCR/DVD Combo is crappy since one of my tapes broke, and the VCR wouldn't eject the tape all the way... :( I can finally record my favorite shows, but I have to use my living room cable to record TV shows in high quality & Hi-Fi rules.

  • I prefer tapes to DVDs mainly because

there are so many more unique and interesting selections on tape that you

won't find anywhere else. DVDs , it seems, are populated mostly by

    straight- to- cable B-pictures .

  • @danzamphi I like the tapes better too, I just bought a new VCR on ebay, along with a new VHS tape to play on it, I love the panasonic VCR

  • Those Ion USB VCRs SUCK.

The chassis is bottom-of-the barrel and there is no support for VHS Hi-Fi audio.

I'd never rely on that thing to transfer my cassettes over to DVD because I'd be afraid of it damaging the tape on account of the low build quality.

Get a real VCR, like a Panasonic AG-1980 (which will basically track any cassette you can play on it and has among some of the best TBC ever built into a VCR for cleaning up VHS video) and use a decent video capture device.

  • Hello i have a panasonic 1970 with a tbc will that do the same thing as the 1980? i just got it a few days ago. @Watcher3223

  • @stpworld

The 1970 is the predecessor of the 1980. It's also an excellent deck with a good TBC.

You can't really go wrong with either the AG-1980 or the AG-1970.

  • Hello thanks for replying to my comment also what does the tbc do i forgot i was wondering if you could tell me and can it defeat the copy gaurd cause i have a conversion system my self buti use a pc and pro vcrs not that stupid ion thing. @Watcher3223

  • @stpworld

    TBC = Time Base Correction

Correction of signal timing errors by buffering the signal and outputting it to a timed reference. This way, the signal is stable, allowing it to work in sync with other equipment.

A VCR is an electromechanical device with the signal extracted directly using a mechanical apparatus. Instability of the signal timing may exist from inherent mechanical imperfections, so the signal must be electronically corrected to restore signal/time stability.

  • @stpworld

'can it defeat the copy gaurd cause i have a conversion'

No. The copyguard, more specifically the MacroVision AGC burst, is in the video's vertical blanking. The only way to remove that from the video is to conceal the AGC pulses in the vertical blanking and that would require a copyguard blocking adapter, such as the Sima Video Copymaster.

This adapter would be connected between the video output of the VCR and the video input of the recorder.

  • Most of my friends and family have transferred all their stuff to eitehr hard drive or DVD....except for my mother who still uses vhs tapes reguarly. She clearly wasnt bothered about upgrading the format so buys blank tapes for dirt cheap and records to vhs more than ever.

Me personally, its all about hard drives but i still like to whip out a good old vhs tape every so often, simply because i refuse to buy all the james bond movies up to the world is not enough again on DVD!

  • I have a lot of old VHS' and i allso have a JVC VCR. I usually play the old VHS' on the VCR. But yeah. I would like to convert my VHS' to DVD.

  • I am and I love it.

  • Comment removed

  • I simply often use my old VCR with my 2nd DVB box to record a 2nd programm

  • Too bad they stopped selling it at Think Geek.

  • very hot lol old junk!!!hehe

  • bluray ftw

  • u can still get that from amazon for $10

  • that vcr looks like a piece of junk

it's not even stereo it's mono

    and no remote

  • I Liked VCRs. It annoys me to no end that many DVDs don't let you fast-forward the annoying ads and copyright notices ... I bought the player, bought the DVD, if I press fast-forward, don't tell me no. Obey machine, obey!

  • i love Video Caption Recorders but there now the new" analogue clock"how do you like that analogy?

  • Exactly why I hate DVD's...

VHS still looks awesome on a 42-inch 1080P LCD HDTV, provided you have a good VCR. My old Lion King tape looked and sounded unbelievable on that setup!

  • My VHS vidoes do great on my DVD VCR combo,HDMI outputw orks cool with VHS!

  • same here i still use vhs and i also still have betamax do you have SVHS?@sb100sb100

  • "...Just before Windows XP had shipped..."

    "What's Windows XP?"

    lol

  • didn`t you know ? VCR is back , people all around the world is throwing away their dvd and bluray because the vcr is better!

  • Wait a minute, I could swear this was on the subscribes page. Just noticed the posted date Dec08?

  • Wow what a coincidence, I just dusted off my old VCR player last night because I didn't have Oceans Eleven on DVD. Had to wait 30min for it to rewind because I couldn't remember how to do the fast rewind. Also felt weird inserting a caset after so long.

  • I would buy the tape

  • I still use VHS. It's a lot cheaper to buy movies at the thrift shop.

  • This thing has very bad reviews.

  • it may be surprising i have many many vhs tapes and still use them on a regular basis. lol

  • Why the fuck does it have to be MP4? Why can't it convert it to something useful like avi or mov?

  • lol at you.

  • why is that?

  • mov? ha

  • What the fuck is the problem here?

  • what??

  • Why are you giving me shit? I use mov files all the time. They aren't great quality, but their good for editing and being able to quickly upload because of their size.

  • The 80's called... they want their shirt back.

  • they called again they want that joke back

  • Can't believe this got 4.5 stars, it's mindnumbingly boring. The guy could have said what he was going to say in a quarter of the time. Did he have dead air to fill or something?!

  • As for USB record players, cassette decks and VCRs... everyone who wants/needs one probably already has an old VCR (etc). Just slap on a cheap digitiser (or plug your audio deck into a decent sound card).

Once you've bought *another* VCR (i.e. this one) and used it for what you bought it for... you don't need it any more! So that's *2* unused machines in the attic. Even sillier- USB cassette player with two decks. If you're transferring your stuff to PC, you probably don't care about dubbing!

  • I USE VCR/VHS!!!

  • I use VCR, DVD & BLU RAY. I have so many old video's

  • LOL

  • They dont even make VHS tapes anymore....

  • the last ones ever were made in december

  • Actually, they still do but not very much anymore.

  • lol YEA mayyybe. But who the fuck vhs anymore?

  • Blank VHS tapes are still available. Older VCRs may not be able to receive TV broadcasts, because they have gone digital 6/12/2009, but connecting to some cable boxes should work. "Tape" a program is no longer the correct term, but could be understood to mean record for later viewing.

  • why would i want a DVD of a movie i have already...i still have my VCR and i like it...sometimes more than DVD's...DVD players break every five seconds...not a VCR!

  • lol i stuck fireworks in my vcr and blew it up

  • HA HA Ha!!! 170 bucks? I went to the local Goodwill store, bought a 5 dollar VCR, that was practically NEW! Bought a 5 dollar TV tuner on Ebay. Set up to watch VHS, Copy, whatever through TV tuner. Totall spent 10 bucks... Also bought new shrikwrapped vhs movies for 50 cent a piece at Goodwill. Have to be on Crack to spend 170 bucks on Ion vcr and use it once...

  • You must have a storage locker full of those tapes! Why does ion make such useless stuff anyway? I'm guessing this one doesn't remove marcovision like all attempts at something like this. What do to.. to do this right.. get a lite-on DVD recorder or other brand that can be hacked to no macro.. record from any VCR to it.. then, put DVD in computer and rip using whatever software you like to rip with.. beats installing another crash-producing USB media device for a few old VHS movies..

  • fuk u .stop making videos....u retard

  • This guy besides being stupid is a retard.

  • wtf lol 170 dollars, i'll sell you one of mine for 5 bucks

  • Lol, my parents still have like 20 VHS tapes in our basement, I don't even remember the last time we watched one =P

  • I can't even find VCR anymore

  • i have dish lol

  • lol if Chris thinks that video is old, I've seen a video at a discount store about running "Windows 95, the hottest operating system available today!" as the box said it.

  • my parents still use their VCR; we just got Fios Tv, after 18 years of not having it, so it's not a big leap for me

  • Nineteen-Eighty-Bluruurrrurr

  • My parents still day I have to tape a show. And Twilight is a piece of crap. NEVER SEE IT!!! I gave up VCRs and VHS Tapes 2 years ago. I still have a TV/VCR/DVD combo. That is only for emergencies when the PC malfunctions and I need to "tape" a show. Remember, skip Twilight.

  • Hrm this one you had with a USB connection is awesome. My mom wants me to convert like 100's of vhs home movies from back in the olden days.

  • You can get a digitiser or TV card for much cheaper than this thing- plug your old VCR and PC into it!

  • I still have 5 vcrs, 3 of them are stand alone vcr, The oldest is a samsung from 1992 with the old symbol of many stars. another one is a goldstar (LG) from 1993, another is a panasonic with jetrewinder from 1998. The to other ones are one from 2002/2004 vcr+dvd, both are samsung, both are able to record from vhs to dvd or vice versa. i love technology i always have the best i can, so those vhs recorders are gonna be on service until they get damage and i always take care of my stuff. :)

  • lol @ the chat

    wat faegz

  • I know, I was just going to comment about them. It's funny how alot of them try to act bigger/better/smarter than everyone else, or even chris.

Maybe to get this guys respect? To suck up and be a little favorite by him? I don't know, but it's really funny.

Also lol @ how they tried to "guess" or "give away" what he was going to talk about, which was a vcr before he even said it. Just shows us that they watch him all the time, and all day. Hehe..

  • I have 3 that I use almost everyday. Take a lot of time to get ready in the morning so I tape stuff. Some I've watched online with CBS, ABC, FOX and NBC, don't mind the small commercials. But watching it on my LCD TV (2nd Monitor) is troublesome. Also only time I've gotten a BSOD is with their stupid proprietary players. It's way easier to just "tape" stuff than do it on my PC. If I didn't watch so much TV when I get "ready" then I'd do the DVR (or DVR's) route.

  • 170 dollars? Just use the vcr you have , or take it out of your closet and buy a cheap capture card. sseriously 170$

  • Yep i too have 2 VCR's hooked up: and 1 new still in the box. My grandkids have so many VHS movies they love to watch when they visit. Chris make copies of the vhs to DVD for giveaway's on your stream..

  • my mom still refers to recording a show as "taping" it

  • I think terminology like 'taping' will be with us for a long time to come. Like how we all 'dial' phone numbers, even though phones haven't had dials for years.

  • i think you're right on that. the term doesn't refer to the specific way of doing it, just the general action.

  • I have one

  • record ps3

  • Stop laughing at me!! ;-D Yes I do still tape shows, because my DVD recorder is broken and I need to get a new one. We don;'t have a DVR.

As for that particular VHS machine.. I really prefer transferring my VHS tapes to DVD. My harddrive is not big enough to hold all my collection (my collection is huge), and I don't want to have to buy hard drives just for that.

  • Yeah, my parents say the "tape" thing with the DVR all the time. I am so gonna do what you said about looking for the tape deck.

  • ROFL 1980hghklr XD

  • I still use a VHS recorder. clean the heads off like your supposed to and they actually look and sound quite well. But mine is used for my security camera(s).

  • we still got a working panasonic NV-J11 VCR. all the new ones we have had have broken.

  • VCRs were the best.

No idea how many cartoons I tape in the morning to taping shows on fridays as a kid.

  • Why spend all that money on a special vcr that connects to th computer when you can get a $20 tv tuner card an hook up a standard vcr to it.

I still use VHS and Betamax. I have no Mp4's.

  • And also, once you have used your expensive USB VCR, you won't need it again... and you have *another* unused VCR to go in the attic!

  • white man america..is going backward in technology why japan is advancing...japan is my pride!!!

  • The VCR shown is for transferring *old* tapes to digital format (PC or DVD)!

Either you missed the point, or you are using a flimsy excuse to criticise America.

  • Can I buy that VHS off of you? :D

  • Why not use XLR8?

  • Yardsale + a s-video = alot cheaper lol

  • When ever I need to get a video off of a VHS tape, I just use my Archos 605 with the DVR dock and plug the composite cables into the dock record from that

  • lol, 1980...what?

  • VCR? whats that? lol I just finished getting rid of all my VHS tapes lol, now they bring out another VCR.

  • VCRs are still great for recording TV programs, and no monthly DVR/cable fees...

  • theres also DVD recorders

  • I don't know where you live, but in the UK we have DVRs that support "free" (exc. compulsory license fee) OTA digital TV.

You can select the program by name via EPG, and some even have USB if you want to transfer the recordings elsewhere.

DVD recorders are fine for archive I guess, but using them for timeshifting smacks of analogue/VHS mentality that isn't necessary in a digital world. Why bother with removable media if you don't need to?

  • Must be running out of ideas for video's. these are just filler at this point.

  • I still have a VCR but it has more dust than material that makes the VCR itself

  • i do miss that tech tv....... was way better than G4

  • nice vcr...I'd by that techtv vhs though

  • I own too many movies not to own a VCR

  • back in 198...blruhg

  • sometimes old kung-fu movies should only be watched on vhs

    :)

  • I love my VCR and VHSC Camcorder

  • I used it about 2 months ago.

  • I think it'd be cheaper to buy a composite adapter for computers and to buy an older VCR for $20. For example, an eyeTV Hybrid for Mac OS X would save you quite a bit.

  • Hehe, No I don`t use my VCR still, but I do have one gathering dust somewhere, same story for my hundreds of VHS tapes.

  • Would it have a/v inputs?

  • vhs? vcr? Those are ancient!!!

  • So is Satan?

  • yes, i do still use them

  • cool
