I have always suspected that the trade was abolished because the slave population was sufficient--the trade became unnecessary--nevertheless the slave trade especially the middle passage was even more horrendous than slavery as SNCC pointed out Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer pointed out "we were used as breeders" in fact there was an internal slave trade from the upper south in the US to the lower south- because the soil in Virginia became exhausted.
