She ir just fantastic. Callas was the best for her time, now it's the time for Anna Netrebko. In my opinion this is just a grate performance and the role suits perfectly for her. She can do anything! Her voice is beautiful, she is gorgeous and she can act too, what more can we expect? I just love her.
Why? It's the only possible question... Why on earth would the Met hire a Lyric Soprano to sing a Coloratura role? It's not for her! Lucia consists of difficult coloratura passages, runs, trills, demands agility, wich she doesn't have! She should do Traviata, Marriage of Figaro, Roméo et Juliette, Don Giovanni! Lyric roles! Don't get me wrong, she's a good soprano, just in the wrong repertoire...
Who is this Callas? Where can I go to see her perform?? What about Corelli? Bjorling? Sutherland? Who are these singers??? I never see them on the roster for the Met. I see Callejas and Damraus and Netrebkos and Hampsons and Brownlees. Guess they will have to do.
She isn't a horrible singer. She is very good. Whether you think that she is a good lucia is a matter of opinion. Dessay, Sutherland have become the ones that we are used to hearing. Not everyone's voice is the same. Netrebko may not be a good actress but she is a very good singer. How else would she be singing at the MET?! She also seems like a very nice lady and we should be ripping her apart for doing something she loves!
@xa1990lx You are right, she is very good, just not in this role. She doesn't have the control in her upper register that coloraturas have, such as Dessay. That being said I think her Mimi is incredible and her Violetta is amazing, whereas if someone such as Dessay sang Mimi it would be, well, like Netrebko sining Lucia...
And Dessay's Violetta is just alrite, but she knows that, it was just a dream role for her
Not everyone's voice is the same, and Netrebko isn't a coloratura soprano
@jtg10795 I saw Lucia live with Dessay, and I actually prefer Netrebko (not trying to start a fight lol). Dessay was amazing, I'm not sure what it is, I feel the darker tones Netrebko has works for me for Lucia, and I'm actually excited to see her as Anna Bolena, whose not supposed to be as frail as Lucia so the dark edge in her voice might work even better.
@TCNJHarpist Don't worry, I'm not one of those angry commenters who believes there is only one correct opinion :) I completely understand your thought process for that, and it makes sense, I'm just more heavily weighing other aspects than you are in this comparison. It's all dependent on personal preference, in which clearly we differ, although we respect the other side (unlike 90% of other people on here...).
@jtg10795 Totally agree! Every performers different, and the voice has to go with the role. I'll never say Dessay was terrible, because obviously she's not, and she did give me chills during this scene, and I understand the detractions to Netrebko, because unlike Dessay, who just rips up the octave like nothing, you can see the trills and runs are a bit harder for Netrebko to get out. They're both Prima Donna's, but just for different reasons, and those reasons why neither side can be wrong!
@TCNJHarpist EXACTLY! Though I will say usually I listen to timbre to make sure it matches the part, I for some reason do not weigh it as heavily for Lucia (seriously it's pretty much just Lucia). Maybe it's because I know it's tragic but she's still just a poor young lady. For Violetta I prefer when non-coloratura sopranos sing it because she's a courtesan with a dramatic life, it doesn't work when lighter voices sing it. Queen of the Night, I can't have a light voice, and Olympia cant be heavy
@jtg10795 I agree with all of your choices, and in my brain I know Lucia has to be more fragile and then just break by act 2, but I think I like the darker edge because then when she does go crazy in the mad scene it seems like you saw this darkness underneath all the time, so she was always slightly fragmented the entire opera, but again, just my interpretation :)
@TCNJHarpist And that interpretation makes perfect sense. I just see it from a different angle, seeing this youth going all over the place. They all work in this wonderful role, unless the singer can't act for her life and has absolutely no insanity to her part at all (cough cough Joan Sutherland cough cough. If you like her interpretation I understand why, but I personally just need to feel chills in this aria from the craziness)

Looks don't make a good actress or a good singer, definitely. However, I must admit her voice timber is beautiful. Not for bel canto roles, though...

too bad the doctor's shot didn't kill her. xD Sorry, but she's not that good. Acceptable, but not for the excelence of lucia.
