  • i see a U of O shirt! i'm going there! what program were you in?

  • yo man. thanks for teaching me about setsubun. got a bag of setsubunmame from my friend who was visiting from japan. i was curious about the meaning. interesting.

  • Just wondering, you're a primary school teacher teaching English in Japan, right? Did you have to learn Japanese first? It seems like a 'duuuur' type question, but really I just want to know if learning Japanese is completely necessary. (other than the fact it'd be easier to communicate...)

  • I love Zetzubun!!:)

  • Ah the old intro

  • haha...i will make a new one someday. Maybe over my Xmas holidays!

  • and by away I from wales in british country and I not english, I'm welsh.

  • oni mean ogres right

  • yep...thats right. Ogres!

  • there one question I don't get it, but why some people called oni a demon and devils, but the last time I look on the internet it say here akuma is japanese word for demon or devils and the oni is japanese word for ogres because it almost a same one in western ogres?

  • lol, "WHAT IS SETSUBUN!?"

  • your videos really capture the culture and festivities! Don't forget the beer lol. Children are so cute! I bet you had lots of fun! Wish you had video of you being pelted! lol Daichen is awesome! Toodles?! Love it i haven heard that word in forever!

  • I also wish I had video of me being pelted, but I was too busy trying not to get beans in my eyes to take video! Glad you still enjoy my vids so much :)

  • Had you mentioned something, a video could have easily been captured...

    :D

  • Ah....good point! Shit...didn't even think about that! Anyways..my costume sucked so better that no one on You Tube-Land will ever see it!

  • Cool video, man. I was a day late on mine.

  • Glad you liked it! I was working and wasn't able to make it to a shrine to see the outdoor festivities.

  • Mate, I'm catching up and just watched this... This explains my mini-subscriber flood on Sunday... Wow! Thanks man.

I hope you survived setsubun relatviely unscathed ;)

    Peace

  • Thank you sir! I too owe you for the subscriber flood I got on Saturday/Sunday....about 15 in one day...awesome!

    Hope you're well :)

    Kev

  • Hey, congrats on making partner!

Hope one of your vids goes viral and makes you some cash!

  • Me too! I'll cross my fingers and toes on that one. I noticed the other day, you're doing well...pushing 4000 subs! wow....congrats to you!

  • I remember when I was little, my classmates and I did the whole setsubun ritual. I was the demon, and my friends mixed some rocks in with the beans.... I hated my friends then.....

thanx for the shout out buddy! I appreciate it man!!!!

  • those were those friends of yours that turned up missing years later, daichen?

  • Yes...I think I saw something about that on the news! hehe

  • I suppose we used to do similar things growing up in Eastern Canada. Of course we didn't hurl beans at each other, but I can remember being hit with and throwing a few snowballs with a large rock in the middle !

No prob with the shout out....always wanting to get more subs for those around me :)

  • How's the recession affecting you in Japan Kevin? I work for a Japanese company in the US and it seems like there's a panic to consolidate or downsize.

  • Actually, I'm pretty unaffected by it (knock on wood). Enrollment at my school is constantly increasing. The Yen is strong and basically, it's business as usual for me. If anything, the strong Yen helps me since I'm taking a trip to Korea next month. The Korean Won is really weak so I already bought some.

  • Good to hear that. At my company we're laying off a lot of Japanese temps that work in Japan. Korean vendors we deal with are not faring so well either. Seems like only medical and education fields are expanding at this point. Maybe I should come to Japan to teach English as well when I get laid off. LOL

  • TOTORO! hahah cool

  • hehe

  • They throw them at me i might eat em O_O

  • that's generally the idea at mami-maki at temples and shrines. People throw beans and other things to crowds. And the crowd will eat the beans.

As for Devils, they go blind for some reason if they get hit in the eye with the beans - of course I think anybody would (temporarily) go blind from getting hit in the eye with a bean.

  • What happens when the demons get hit with Soy Joy bars?? hehe

I'm really looking forward to it. If I can't get to a shrine this year, I will for sure try next year!

  • Apparently you're supposed to eat one for each year of your age!

  • Feb 3rd!! same as my birthday! lol that was totally random.

you're wearing u ottawa shirt! i go to carleton u lol. there was a basketball game like 3 days ago at ottawa u..i don know who won but ya..lol

  • cool. Yeah...I went to teacher's college at uOttawa. How's things in Ottawa? I love it there so much in the summer :)

  • Comment removed

  • No...at least not since I've been here. cool...glad to hear the strike is finally over.

  • Make sure and wear some eye protection, even under the mask. Kids have an AMAZING ability to hurt adults.

  • Tell me about it! I think I've been rendered sterile since I've been hit between the legs so many times...at least 3 times a week! I should wear full riot gear with the mask!

  • they haven't tried to "kancho"(?) have they?

  • luckily no....my kids don't do that one. They sure as hell did back in 2002 when I moved to Korea. In Korea it's called "dong chim" which directly translates to "shit shove"! Same as a kancho! I remember getting about 6 of them my first day as a teacher there :(

  • Loved this video! Hope the people don't throw the beans to hard! Sounds like it could hurt! XD

  • Luckily my students are small and can't throw well...but I'm sure they'll find a way to hurt me :)

  • Lol!

  • Hey, I'm currently attending uOttawa. Nice.

  • Sweet! I went to Teacher's College at uOttawa! How's the wetaher there? Can't believe the transit strike is STILL going on! That must suck sooooo much:(

  • Actually, the strike ended on Thursday, the buses will be back in service starting on the 9th of February.

As for the weather, there has been quite a bit of snow lately.

  • Nice to hear that the strike is will be over soon. Must have been such a pain. I was an OC Transpo rider when I lived in Ottawa...took the bus everyday.

  • I didn't know about this festival; thanks for the video!

  • You're welcome :)

  • I lived in the international dorm for a couple years of college. I played the Oni for setsubun one year, and them beans hurt like hell! So throw gently. It's a human being in that mask. :-)

  • Luckily the people throwing at me are small and can't throw very well. Fortunately, there are no future "major leaguers" in my class!

  • Just another soy bean marketers' conspiracy against its unsuspected citizens to boost the sales. I've always thought of it that way ever since my very first "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!"

Let's not just eat them, but have FUN with them!!! : (

  • hehe...I does sound like a conspiracy! The soy bean producers of the world are out to get us all!

  • Totoro!

  • That festical sounds like so much fun! Hope you don't get pelted with beans too badly, hahaha! What a neat festival. It is so interesting!

  • Hey that rhymes with testicle!

  • :-O OOOOOOPS! (Sorry, Kevin--I didn't mean for that typo to happen!) Thanks, TiramisuHappy, for pointing out my blunder, LOL! I got a good chuckle out of it. But it was a typo, really!

  • No worries...I make typos ALL the time :)

  • It does sound like fun. I've watched some other videos about it! Wish I could go to a temple to celebrate it:)

  • they have some interesting cultural differences, reminds me of that simpson's episode where they have a japanese santa he was called somit like, "Annual gift despensor".

  • cool...I haven't seen that episode!

  • sounds fun

  • I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun!

  • Setsubun is one of my favorite Japanese holidays. I usually hit a couple of temples and shrines for mami-maki. I got caught a haul last year though I got bashed in the face with a tossed Soy Joy bar.

Hope you're not allergic to soy beans! Have a broom handy!

  • Cool! Luckily I don't have to worry about being pelted with Soy Joy bars. i suppose that from a distance, that's gotta hurt?

As far as I know, I have no soy allergy...hope I don't develope one on Tuesday!

  • dammit - we need an editing function here!

    I meant - "I got 'quite' a haul"

Anyway, you should check the temples and shrines in your area or in the surrounding area - some of them might be doing setsubun events like mami-maki later in the day when you finish work
