'Guitar Man' tour Austin Oct 1st. Breezin opener followed by W in LA, dk the next one, Love X Love, Everything must change, Give me the night, MJ and a Nora Jones instrumental, Tequilla, This Masquerade and closed w/ On Broadway
I'm not going to name my heroes, because there's no comparison...But George Benson makes my guitar gods look like amateur hour..he actually played w/ Santana in that Breezin vid..and well, you seen what happened(on an off night too)..man i wish i'd had youtube(sadbuttrue) when I was younger!!
"...the guitarist that has left the most lasting and impacting impression is George Benson."
Right on! He has so much to say, even on lesser compositions, he always sounds killer. Rock players, hip hoppers....they should hear this. Being an artist is a lifelong development.
"I GOT RHYTHM" is quoted at 4:36 and damn he sure does!
I bet those 3 dislikes are from metal fans. :) still, only three dislikes out of 210,812 viewers. This guy is great. I wish I could write music like him. G.B Rules!!!!
I bet those 3 people that dislike this are metal lovers :) Some people just don't know what good music is. This guy is crazy. I wish that I could right music like this.
There was Charlie Christian, then there was Wes Montgomery and now George Benson. There's not going to be a fourth it doesnt get any better than Benson.
Benson, Buddy Rich, Stanley Clarke, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughn, Roger Troutman and Dizzy Gillespe come to mind when I think of pioneers that are often imitated and never duplicated
me i like 2 hear a live band play.... 2 see & hear the quality of the music played... these days we don't get that from the younger generation... what happen 2 them... i don't know....
@xXironraiderXx To put Norman Brown in the same category as George Benson is just crazy and is not going to happen. I divide guitar players into two categories...one being a surface player which is what Norman Brown is and then the in depth player. George is probably the best surface player and at the same time has incredible depth to his playing meaning the way he approaches the guitar, how he improvises through chord changes, technique and so on.
I also love the red guitar he's using here. I believe it's a more simple version of his usual GB-10 model. It allows for a more edgy tone.. I like it.
The GB-10 is much smaller than the guitar he is playing here. This one is the Gb-5 and is not based at all on the Gb-10. The Gb-10 has floating pickups and has a much different frequency response (more midrangy) because of its smaller body and thicker top.
@MICRODMO Pleeeeeze dude, have you sat down and attempted to copy either of these players?!? If you did, then you should immediately notice how easier Norman's shit is to play. However, in all due fairness; Norman's music has a younger, and more modern R&B/Funk twist to it than Benson's, but of course, Norman is a younger guy...
@MICRODMO You obviously do not have the ear to discern between a half ass guitarist like Norman and a virtuoso guitarist like George. Before you even consider Norman, I must ask...Have you even bothered to listen to the likes of Bobby Broom, Rodney Jones? These guys can run circles around Norman. All you have to do is get a descent rhythm section together along with these three guitarists and yell out Rhythm Changes. Lets see who's standing at the end of the improvised exchanges...
I agree, it's the rhythmic variation (impeccable timing) and the effortless flow that make it a joy to hear and see. I've played 40+ years and will never have such an incredibly relaxed right hand. :-)
Do like Jim Hall and Pat Metheny though, but it's a different thing than what George does.
I think what people will notice if they listen hard is George's outstanding rhythmic sensibilities compared to the very best players (including Pat Martino). His syncopation is what holds my interest more than the next guy who can play fast but without the eloquence that George plays with. Another area that I feel he shines in is the nuance in each note of his playing. Players can play the same notes but they are lifeless in comparison.
the difference betweeb GB and his contempories: Pat Metheny, Martino etc (al amazing players) is that GB sings as well. I'm sure this gives him more vocalness to his playing over the others
rhythm is the King ..not notes. Notes follow if one has a soulful way of using time feel. African percussionists are the masters of this kind of feel good time feel mastery. Sure there are other cultures who may have developed a more complex set of theories for reasons based maybe on needs to prove something . But who seems to have more fun? Wes smiled and didn't strain so much of his time while playing. We know who the greatest time feel and tonemasters are. Many can imitate but never exceed.
Being from NYC, I have had the privilege of jamming with some of New York's best jazz guitarists like Bobby Broom, Rodney Jones, Ed Cherry just to name a few. In my opinion, George Benson was born with a special gift in which he took the time to develop. He is just simply a natural. A good friend of mine would argue that Pat Martino was a better player. Pat is an icon in his own right but in my lifetime, the guitarist that has left the most lasting and impacting impression is George Benson.
In my lifetime too! His ability to express emotional content in his playing seems to be on another level compared to other players. There's always a rightness to his note selection and also he knows when the melody calls for simplicity or conversely when to go for broke.
@intelimundo Pat martino might be better in some aspects but george benson is better in other aspects as well. Anyway, I dont think that can be said that pat martino is better or the other way around. They are music lovers and they play it as they feel it. What is sertain is that George is a better singer LOL.
@fanqueen If you reread what I wrote, you will see that I clearly said that the guitarist that has had the most influence or had the most impact on me as a musician is George Benson. I never said one was better than the other. Of course if you want to get technical I can argue very good case as to why George might be a better guitarist. But then of course that is open to individual interpretation and opinion.
@intelimundo I know what you wrote, I was a little bit ironic. I wrote that because you said that you have a friend who tells you that pat martino is a better player. Personally I think that they are both great and they play music as they feel it.
I think that you misunderstood what I wrote. I would never criticize them, they had a huge influence in me also.
@intelimundo You said it right brother, Benson has the elasticity on the guitar. He does not play tunes the same each time. Benson plays the tunes according to his feelings. There are some excellent guitarplayers out there but most of them remain too radical in their playing. Spirits communicate to spirits and not techniques to spirits.
Tallsmilingtree is correct, no matter what Mr. GB plays, he is the Baddest!!! jazz player out. Innovation maximus!! His identity is always present on all of his work. Nobody hits it like George. Hats off for all he has given over the 50 plus years, setting a high standard in approach and execution. The Gentleman"s Gentleman of Guitar.
Back in da 80s I used to listen to this song all the time as I banged blonde hos on Sunset Strip. Man, those were the days, sipping on pinacoladas by the hotel pool, watching the palm trees sway in the air, sampling tropical fruits and champagne, schmoozing and womanizing. Bring back the 80s I say !!
Even though he plays alot of pop fusion these days (that's where the money is) as long as he is alive he will always be the BADDEST jazz guitar player out there! No matter what he plays! Of course I love his straitahead stuff best.
++++++God help me he is great great great, in the pocket and non-stop smokin, and not just mindless shredding but making glorious music! If I could pick any guitarist I'd want to be able to play just like George Benson.
Superb, George is one of the last Jazz greats! Amazing musician. By the way, this is one of the few occasions when he played the RED GB5 Ibanez guitar,... it was not a production model. The production one was brown sunburst. This one in red is VERY VERY beautiful !

I would like to see someone playing on 24 carat gold guitarstings on a solid gold guitar... this man deserves one!

He wouldn't need one.
As my guitar teacher once said way back in 1980 I think, . . .
he was looking at my cheap guitar and commented:
"Benson could make this sound good"
and I always remembered that, because it's true. Better to have a great player than a super expensive instument.
But Benson is one of the few players that would deserve an all gold instrument.

Outstanding!Recently a good friend of mine, also a great player, happened to meet George, who was gracious enough to invite my friend to an impromptu jam session. This man is the best there is at this art,and as players ourselves,we all have tremendous respect and admiration for him.
