Most of the veterans were pilots, particularly helicopter pilots fresh out of Vietnam and they loved to dive the choppers off a hill top and have everyone back lose their stomachs. Speaking of paratroopers, the jump training was rigorous and very formal. Later in the 70's I tried skydiving but was unsettled by the casualness of the jump masters and didn't continue.
@omg101man yup its like making a ditch too wide for u to jump, u jump u will fail same with the flames even if it makes it across the ditch most of the fuel aka leaves, wood, brush ect. would be smothered by dirt so even if the flames make it there is a little if no chance of another fire starting and also its for S & R operations like i sometimes there maybe no time to get through the flames to save someone so they go behind it to get the person and lead them out once there is an opening
I am an Initial Attack (I.A.) fire fighter and the Smoke Jumpers now days are the Elite of the Elite.... They have 100lbs packs and everything, I am working on getting to the Smoke Jumper trainning in Missoula, MT.
I visited a smoke jumper unit in Winthrop, WA, last summer. Not much has changed since the movies were shot. One of the jumpers showed us around and explained everything. They are on duty 24/7 during the season, off over the winter. A mission lasts 2-4 days in the wilderness usually. They start out with a 100lbs backpack.
Crazy thinking that this was made just before the US' entrance into WWII and alot of these guys prolly joined as paratroopers. And they didn't even know about pearl harbor.

I was a smokejumper out of Winthrop in 1970. Not much had changed in the years since this movie was shot. It was a great experience for a young man.
