i love playing all of narciso yepes's arrangmets of gaspar sanz ''suite espanola'' i played them too when i was in high school. i even uploaded it on here yt, :) yepes was a great legend, truly a master of classical guitar.
I came here for the guitar and stayed for the dancing. It's great to see these old dances come to life, and it helps me to interpret them correctly on the guitar. Youtube is so useful for musicians.
It is extremely interesting watching these "danzas" along with a performing dancer, too often we forget that these pieces were made to make people dance. It gives you a slight different idea about the way they should be played.
You make an excellent observation. I believe it is important for guitarists to be familiar with the source before taking liberites with interpretation.
What I find really interesting is the "Canarios" parts when the dancer hits the stage with her backheels stressing the notes. I think this video is very educational for those who approach ancient music for guitar.
@salnizzo1974 I also agree with this observation. So many guitarist today are after speed, forgetting the original intent of the music. Interpretation is fine, but the purpose should not be lost.
so nice that these rare clips of yepes appear on youtube. he was a master who brought the 10-string to prominence. music is available on d.grammaphone. to this day, i still prefer his version of 'asturias' to almost anyone.
he may have brought the 10-string to prominence as you describe it, but he only plays the lower 6 strings. He rarly uses the other strings so he could just play a normal guitar...
It's true he doesn't play the 4 bass strings often but when he does it's usually remarkably effective. The 4 strings are there to even out the resonance. Anyone wanting in-depth explanations should visit the links in my profile.
Belleza...

beautiful, thanks for posting. I have rarely seen a 10 string guitar played!

@odor9 Glad you enjoyed it! Beware: if your ear gets used to the 10-strings' superior resonance, it may be hard going back;)
