  • jerking off

  • Es un diálogo muy inteligente.

  • this is damn sexy

  • Bill Stewart is one of the most interesting sounding drummers in the world. His melodic playing and the tuning of his drums really work well . Great independence. iI would love to hear Patitucci play with Brian Blade.

  • @drumz47 He does, in Wayne Shorter's new acoustic 4tet. So awesome.

  • unbelievable

  • That is just BADASS how the bass is playing the head and that the drums are the only part of the rhythm section. That being said, it's amazing (but not surprising) how well they're keeping it together with such complexity! Musicians of the highest order and the utmost respect!

  • @freddylebanon bad taste? patitucci? i dont belive this guy

  • @freddylebanon bad taste? patitucci? i dont belive this guy

  • @freddylebanon :S ..... heavy, power, and music rock metal is a sport, but jazz is an art

you should learn to listen clasic jazz be-bop....

  • @freddylebanon actually these are melodic lines , its pity that you hear only chops .. just try to listen as tenor sax or something like this

  • @freddylebanon He's good enough for Wayne Shorter

  • i really do not like when the bass player gets this sound of his bass. Impressive, yes but its sound makes me want to throw up

  • @Hajimodo and @idektron Hey. Faggots. Shut up.

  • @FunkmasterF18

Excatly ;). All big boys over the internet.

  • wow!

  • John Ptitucci only him

    great on bass

I had the opportunity to watching play in LA at Catalinas it's amazing

  • John Ptitucci only him

    great on bass

  • John's solo is unbelievable! amazing! wowwww!!! John Patitucci is a total killer motherfucker!!

  • Amazing!!!

  • i love this composition and their playing

i play this track on guitar, i know how fuckin difficult it is.

    very nice and fast version!

  • I love how I can hear the melody of the tune in Bill Stewart's solo.

  • impresionante¡¡¡¡¡¡

de los mejores solos de bateria que vi

  • I love the way Bill Stewart plays! The way his ideas just flow out so perfectly when he improvises!!Pure Art at its highest level!!

  • The musical skills of this duo are phenomenal! With that said, JP's extended solo didn't offer much variation in pitch range, dynamics, or even note duration. It sounds like an improvised 'etude' for a clinic meant to explore/demonstrate a single technical idea, which is what it was. I am sure his playing is much more interesting in a performance context.

  • fantastico!!

  • crapico!!

  • 4:45-4:58 is SO swingin'!

  • no it's not it blows..

  • I'm currious to know why you think so??

  • because its like taking a ordinary instrument with a set frequency range i.e bass and then making into this stupid sounding squeely bumble bee ! sounds ridiculous, flashy yes but horrible to listen to.. good drums tho !

  • @idektron

I have to respectfully disagree. No, the bass isn't the best sounding melodic instrument, but this was for "bass day". I think it shows how versital Patitucci is! It's a grear solo, as far as outlining the chords and making it creative. I think if you were to look past the tambre of the instrument and actually listen to whats really going on you might appreciate it alittle more... And yes Stewart is amazing!!!

  • @idektron

You have no idea what you're talking about.

  • @Hajimodo I know exactly what I am talking about, your just ignorant.

  • @idektron

No, this is my area of expertise. You, on the other hand, can't tell when to use "your" and "you're".

  • @Hajimodo are of expertise ! how silly ! the difference in your and you're is ' and e

  • @idektron

And the "a" when spelling "area". You've proven that you've got the market cornered on ignorance.

  • @Hajimodo No that proves I can not type. You truly are ignorant.

  • @idektron

Says the one who can't spell. All of YouTube is laughing at you now.

  • @Hajimodo yeah all of YouTube must b cracking up this is so hilarious ! Ignorance is bliss..

  • @idektron

    It is for you.

  • @Hajimodo no you !

  • @idektron

I know you are, but what am I? Infinity!

    I win.

  • @Hajimodo your a self proclaimed expert that says it all ! Infinity+1 = I win

  • @idektron

There is no such number as infinity +1, Mr. Ignorant. It is, by definition, impossible. You still lose.

  • @Hajimodo o dear you don't know when to stop showing yourself up ! infinity in itself is not a real number ! you really should think before you show yourself up ! you still lose as you are 'the expert' in self indulgent bass tripe ! You win !

  • @idektron

Yes, yes I do win. Thank you for admitting it. I am now done fighting a battle of wits against an unarmed person.

  • @Hajimodo ignorant to sarcasm too I see you obviously will never win in life ! Your always 8 steps behind ! You win !

  • @idektron

And once again you admit that I win.

  • @Hajimodo Once again sarcasm bypasses you. Hello this is ignorance calling anyone there ? ...

  • @idektron

Hi Ignorance, this is You Admitted I Win, Twice. Your friend Sarcasm is nowhere to be found.

So let's recap: You admitted I win, twice, and then used the first person tense to tell me your name is Ignorance. It must be, you didn't capitalize the "I" in the proper noun that is your name. Notice the proper use of the word "your".

  • @Hajimodo o dear you really are simple, you just don't get it ! if i were you i would stay indoors and never go outside ! you win there too (SARCASTIC), there have said it 3 times now mayb that will sink in, you must have a terrible poker face..

  • @idektron

Simple? You're the one who can't even capitalize the "I" when referring to yourself. To remind you again, after you admitted I win twice, you told us all your name was Ignorance, which also should have been capitalized. Apparently you were playing hooky the days they taught spelling and grammar, which is the very definition of simple. That must be your middle name. You should have quit while you were behind.

  • @Hajimodo yes simple. and yes you have already commented at my lack of spelling and grammar which i admitted to, lets move things on to the next level shall we ? Also stating the obvious people who can't spell aren't by definition 'simple' there is more to life than mere spelling, Einstein was dyslexic you know ? is he simple ? I hope this battle of wits goes on for ever as you clearly not up for the task ... ! Here's a helping hand don't take things literally ! You win..

  • @idektron

Einsten was dyslexic. You're illiterate. Big difference.

I've grown tired of showing you up. You can keep going if you want to.

  • @Hajimodo glad to know you can't handle the pace any more ! attitude of a true winner... p.s I'm clearly literate just type too fast. Massive difference.

  • @Hajimodo shut up, we are trying to listen to some jazz

  • @Hajimodo pearl harbor. boom

  • o melhor do mundo no bass

  • Que toque y feeling tan cabròn tiene Bill Stewart....impresionantemente musical, de mis batacos favoritos.

  • Well that's just you. It's a completely different approach from rock/funk/fusion drumming, just like ride cymbal time vs. hihat time. Personally, I use a small kit with a "bongy" tone on the bass drum for jazz things and a fusion kit with a "kicky" bass drum for everything else.

  • that's right, Gretsch sucks:):):) Tony, Elvin and bunch of other guys had no idea how bad their bass drums sounded:)

  • strange, because I love it!

  • i like the drummer

  • absolutely wonderful! VERY musical

  • what a welcome relief from an over literalized , bland , commodified . pop music world.....this is conversation and improvisation inside a form done masterfully....this is art....what a welcome relief from the legions of songwriters just trying to get paid....song writer bullshit!!!!!! thank you for the post and people are listening and we absolutely enjoy and crave these sounds ....THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • Sloppy ??? HAHAHAHAHA WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? PURE MUSIC... MUSIC ISN'T ALWAYS 1+1=2 MATE!!! SHUT UP AND LET THE MUSIC SPEAK!

  • anyone who knows about music knows this is sooo awesome and in perfect time whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • sounds great to me.

  • Errrr......it's called metric modulation, dickwad. Look it up.

  • John AMAZING!!!

  • burning it up...

  • i think that the primary reason that people clapped at the beginning was just "hey, i know that song. that means i know everything about jazz, right?"

  • hahahahahaha ppl right?

hmmm... its sad, but hilarious. whatever, we are cool cuz we know whats up

  • i think the musical idea is great and it grooves, not so like the whole Trane Group, but thats not important, I think he makes the best!!

  • I think this could be way moore musical...

  • That's a joke, right?

    Please tell me you're joking.

  • I agree...Patitucci's playing is really boring on this tune.

  • Different strokes i guess...

  • How much more "musical" can this be? Gimme a break.Don't listen to these morons. Patitucci is amazing.

  • his ideas are so raw...

  • I love Bill Steward

  • that drummer was out of this world.

  • Can anybody tell me how high John's action is? (Is it very high or low or what?). Thanks.

  • based on what he is doing... I definitly think it is a very low action.

  • i've played that bass....he has it set up kinda medium high...

  • there is no need for high action on an electric bass. On double bass, it gives it a warmer, "bassier" tone, as well as making it louder, but because you can add those things on electric it doesnt matter

  • I wish John would do more upright stuff. Not that this isn't the coolest video I've seen in months, but still...

  • well that was amazing. BTW, i met john, and he's the nicest guy you could ever meet. humble.

  • I think it would sound better with a guitar or a piano in the mix, but all the same, fantastic. Worth the watch for that first drum solo alone.

  • you just gotta listen closer. He plays the changes quite well and the form is pretty short.

  • nice answer.your,e a musicien? sorry i dont write so well

  • if you know this song the chords are easy to follow, they're outlined pretty well.

  • I disagree. I can follow the chords fine. Have you heard the song before? If not I could understand how you could loose them, cause the changes are really unconventional (travels in 3rds instead of 4ths).

  • Bill Stewart always sounds great - what a sound! His playing is so melodic. In my top five of contemporary jazz drummers.

  • Original for me.. Just felt like it needed a piano.

  • That's just excellent. Only Drums and Bass and it sounds like nothing was missing, but Bill and John are two of the todays Jazz greats. THANKS FOR UPLOADING!!!!

    greetings from vienna

  • The drummer is better than Gene Krupa. He is one of the best drummers I've ever seen. I'm not comparing him to Krupa because he's white. I'm comparing him to one of the greatest drummers that ever lived. This man is a very, very, very good drummer. Bill Stewart, Bill Stewart, I'll remember that name, that's for sure. He's better than most drummers from the 50's and 60's and they were the best.

  • Great playing by both of them.

  • You think that's LAME!! GEEESHH!! Maybe that's a pretty good description of your brain, not his playing. Why do even bother looking at these comments anyway?

  • ié ! :)

  • beautiful!

  • BILL STEWART = MUSICALITY & ELEGANCE

  • = FUCKING AWESOME!!!

  • wow. amazing. bill stewart is incredible.

  • Have you heard his acoustic bass playing?

  • @pjustusxi I'm not sure which is better!

  • Man Bill Stewart has unbelivable feel

  • Bill Stewart has excellent feel. I must agree. for the rest of you haters I want you to post giant steps with you playing better than john P. and then run your mouth. Respect the musicianship. He is a legend in his own right and I am proud to have sat on stage with a bass player and all around musical genius such as john patitucci. I'm sure your're great but how many records have you cut. where are your awards. videos's ne one. endorsments anyone??I didn't think so.

  • ditto

  • i agree on the fact that john is great.

but the whole "what have you done?" argument is meaningless in my opinion.

  • "I want you to post giant steps with you playing better than john P. and then run your mouth"

just because someone can't do something doesn't mean it isn't lame.

  • stewart's beastly

  • I really can't stand John's tone in this video. Great solo though.

  • im not much of a fan of his electric bass playing, but his upright stuff is godly

  • be better if there was a piano or guitar playing chords as well

  • ya most likely, but i liked this not as common instrumentation, and it's hard to sound this good without an accompanist playing chords. plus for drummers it definitely makes it easier to hear everything bill stewart is doing

  • You wanna hear a guitarist play this song at quarter note = 280? Check out Mike Stern's Give and Take album. There's a transcription at Lucas Pickford's site. Too bad I can't post the link here, so better go Google it.

  • Good old John Pat. Great performance. Some jazz fans are pretty open minded and some aren't. That's just how people are. Whether they are jazz fans makes no difference.

  • YEAH!!!! You're one of the best!!!!!

  • You crazy sick nut!

  • his bass sounds really nice!

    great musicians!

love bill's work with pat metheney!

  • Bill Stewart is god.

    MATCHED GRIP!!! YES!!!

  • I fail to understand why in the fucking hell so many jazz fans (who should be, by definition, open-minded) keep arguing about who´s the best this and that. This is great stuff by itself. Period.

  • The unspoken rule of youtube is that everybody is an authority on everything.

  • indeed!

  • Karlheinzschelker, thats the best comment I've read here. Yo nailed it.

  • @KarlheinzSchelker

That oughta be the tag line right under the YouTube logo.

  • No shit. This is the shaziz. Can you play the notes? Guitar or bass or drums? After 40 yrs of playing and music school, I ams still learning.

  • fair enough but he is just saying "check out kenny garrett"

  • since when jazz fans are open minded? musicians like herbie hancock receive a lot of heat, not only in the electrified jazz era, circa 68/69, but still does to this very day

  • I agree with you. Jazz fans are SUPPOSED to be what, of course, they aren't. This is a contradiction that we have all to go deeper one time or another.

  • great play and skills

though I think bass sounds like shit in the brights

Playing that high is really not honoring the beautifull sound you can get out of a bass.

I doubt John is doing that because of velocity problems, even if indeed sound is harder to control when you play lower on the neck.

  • Let's face it: Coltrane was the only one who could play this tune convincingly, with any authority. And Flanigan's solo on the orginal is pretty great too.

  • You're kidding, right? Flanigan's sounds like he is lost. You don't think Dave Leibman tears this song a new arse??

  • +1 and even if we only considering the electric bass world here, still gary willis does an unequaly melodic solo on his fusion version.

  • there was a video of kenny garrett playing giant steps here on youtube. i actually prefered kenny garrett's solo on giant steps over coltrane's... you should watch that video, even if you agree with me or not.. =)

  • Cheers for the tip. It's a very good version. Kenny's solo is pretty spot on harmonically. And the bassist isn't bad either.

  • great performance here... john is really managing well on those chord changes... and bill stewart is GOD. he obviously absorbed a lot of stuff from elvin and max, even tony williams and mixed it with his own sound. amazing.

  • Saxyman....DO YOUR HOMEWORK! That wasn't McCoy on the original... it was Tommy Flanigan.

  • drummer played changes extremely well... haha.

  • Guitarist doesn't do a great job improvising. Leave this song to McCoy Tyner

  • I don't see a guitarist anywhere.

and McCoy says so himself, he had a hell of a time soloing over this song on the original recording, like anyone does.

  • this is what you call COLTRANE CHANGES ON BASS..Lets hear marcosjoy play over these changes.

  • just amazing..

  • john has mastered playing over these changes, the reason why some people say you can't hear the changes or the form is becuase they are not bound by the changes or the form at all and are freely to do what they may if that makes sense

  • I bet you haven't heard the orginal version of this song

  • you are absolutely wrong.

  • my god.....for a bass player to take charge of giant steps the way john did, not only in melody but in improvisation....my god...that is sooo insane!

big big ups to john and bill for a personality filled performance!

  • His arrangement just didn't do it for me

  • i agree, good musicianship, but Coltranes arrangement is still my favorite.

  • agreed, i've never heard a guitarist pull this off [for me anyway] except john Schofield

  • outstanding

  • Ooops. Sorry. Just read it and heard it. My bear. Great stuff. Awkward to watch matched grip with straight-ahead. But he's on! Nice stuff.

  • that comping style is called straight ahead? I never knew thanks.

  • no, it's not the comping style... it's the style of music. "straight ahead" swing, basically. but yeah, it's funny how much the visual aspect makes a difference... i'm marginally more comfortable playing matched than trad, and i do sound a little better as a result, but i still swing in trad just because.... well, it's swing. you have to.

  • yeah i couldn't agree with you more i'm the same way

  • yeah i couldn't agree with you more i'm the same way

  • Who's the drummer? Some tasty stuff there! Good groove!!!!

  • Bill stewart

  • "Bill Stewart on the drums. Bill Stewart" - John Patitucci.

  • OHHH!

  • BADASS PATITUCCI #1

  • I love how his phrasing isn't hemmed in by the changes. So fluid, it's inspiring. :)

  • love the way bill play drums, it`s different, very distinctive.. the sounds of his kit so raw, love it, love it, love it..

  • The sensiblity of John and Bill in this tune is unmatched. Bills soloing and accompany is poetic.

  • Me Gustaría Opinar, pero No hablo Inglés... jejeje

  • jajaja , que grande stewart!!!! saludos capo
