Had the pleasure to have Tommy come to my cousins wedding back in the 80's... He was still a RIOT!!! Sweety of a guy! I am 33 & LOVE these guys! HEY if you can find "THE BIG BLUE PUMA...." One PLEASE POST IT!
I watched the show during those days. I was a just a kid, so the political stuff got by me. I watched the reruns 25 years later and understood why they were canned. They were funny when they were just being funny. They were entertaining. They had a unique act. But when they got political and let their progressive side show, they were irritating. TV shows were driven by viewers in those days. If viewers didn't like what they were seeing, a show got canned.
hmmm, well at 5:50, I really do what to be a blind and big fat bacon thing that I can see complected :) IT ALL MAKES SENSE! Thank you google translate audio! I know my meaning in life! :D
It's amazing thought provoking shows get canned because they speak against war and racism, but we are allowed to watch trash like Jersey Shore and Real Housewives. Art is so dead.
The most interesting thing about the Smothers is that they could hold their own as folk singers. that's what got them in front of audiences at first. After that, it was all downhill into the morass of Sibling revelry. What a wonderfully original act....
One of the best shows on TV at that time and they kept getting shut down. Things are so different now. I didn't know anyone who was offended by anything they said and there was no foul language. Still love them - I hope they live to be 100.
What was the name of the bit when Tommy whines about never having a pet dog, but got a chicken instead? And he ate it because it wouldnt bark? Hilarious! "Oh yeah?" That's my snappy comeback!
I was so bummed! Last time I was in Laughlin, I went to the Riverside with my dad to see a movie, and when I asked when the Smothers Brothers would be playing again, they told me that they were retired! Oh man! And I never got to see them live.
@gonzobuc1 I absolutely love your comment. Smothers Brothers broke ground, and scared a lot of official people, so the suits shut them down. But they are not truly gone, nor forgotten. I was young when their great show was on the air, and now I am not so young (62 yrs old), but I have not forgotten, and am delighted to be able to see them here now. They were right-on true then. and I think I appreciate them even more now. Long live Smothers Brothers!
@gonzobuc1 They weren't dumb....They knew exactly what the sensitive issues of the time were. They were just unwilling to compromise their values in order to get rich quick....They certainly had the ratings, and that's validation enough, but they probably didn't worry much about that either!
Political Correctness has crippled comedy today. Even with the comedians we have today, they have lines they won't cross, this song does the same thing I do with thinking outside the box. They think there isn't a line at all.
This was one of Jack Andrews' favorite songs. He would play it often on his all night radio program, "The Bat Club," on WDJX-FM in Louisville, Kentucky. WJDX was the #1 (Arbitron rated) FM station in the market at the time. Jack passed away on July 29, 2010. He was 48 years old.

you're right, I'm currently reading a book called Dangerously Funny, which recounts the history of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, right from its premiere to its cancellation, due to pressure from the Nixon administration. It's amazing and downright frightening on how much power politicians had back in the 60s
The Nixon administration basically harrassed the CBS network, with constant threats to terminate its broadcasting license. At this point (1969) THe smother's brother's comedy hour had slipped in the ratings, so the network not wanting to put up with the aggravation, simply cancelled the show.
@TVFREAKMAN Fucking Tricky Dick,we musta really scared him,did Rahm Emanuel's dad work for him, sounds like what they're trying to do to Fox and Beck:)
Actually, he survived the death march, but was killed aboard a Japanese prison transport ship (attacked by the U.S., accidentally) - at least according to David Bianculli's new book on the brothers.
When I was a kid my family watched this show every Sunday night and all laughed together and enjoyed the variety of guests. They don't make TV like this anymore. It showed opposite of Bonanza which was number one for several seasons....until the Smothers Brothers came around!
