  • It was a different time, folks, a different time :P Still hilarious too.

  • Dick's a cotton pickin' bass plucker! What do you think about that?

  • Truly funny guys...Miss 'em and Ed Sullivan too. Ed had some of the BESRT acts on TV. launched many a career too.

  • cottonpickin finger lickin chicken plucker.... HARD TO TYPE AND EVEN HARDER TO SAY!!!

  • A legendary skit... an oldie, but a goodie.

  • A legendary song.

  • Were their mustaches for Movember? Or was that even around back then?

  • It definitely sounds like he says "fucking", seems edgy for the 1960s

  • If only talent like this was still around today.

  • just classic

  • Had the pleasure to have Tommy come to my cousins wedding back in the 80's... He was still a RIOT!!! Sweety of a guy! I am 33 & LOVE these guys! HEY if you can find "THE BIG BLUE PUMA...." One PLEASE POST IT!

  • I watched the show during those days. I was a just a kid, so the political stuff got by me. I watched the reruns 25 years later and understood why they were canned. They were funny when they were just being funny. They were entertaining. They had a unique act. But when they got political and let their progressive side show, they were irritating. TV shows were driven by viewers in those days. If viewers didn't like what they were seeing, a show got canned.

  • These guys are fabulous.

  • my old man's a negro. he's not a negro. YOU ARE A FASCIST!!! i'm not a fascist

  • love it

  • Man, these guys are absolutely hilarious. Comedy, for the most part these days, just doesn't have what this has anymore.

  • hmmm, well at 5:50, I really do what to be a blind and big fat bacon thing that I can see complected :) IT ALL MAKES SENSE! Thank you google translate audio! I know my meaning in life! :D

  • i loved that show

  • oh my god, turn on the captions @5:50 ! That's what I wanna be when I grow up LOL

  • MAKES ME LAUGH EVERY TIME.

  • It's amazing thought provoking shows get canned because they speak against war and racism, but we are allowed to watch trash like Jersey Shore and Real Housewives. Art is so dead.

  • Its quite obvious that anyone who did not like this is simply not old enough to remember them.

  • chords: google smothers brothers "my old man" chords

    They're out there.

  • The most interesting thing about the Smothers is that they could hold their own as folk singers. that's what got them in front of audiences at first. After that, it was all downhill into the morass of Sibling revelry. What a wonderfully original act....

  • Has anybody got the chords for this one? I can't seem to find them anywhere...

  • come on, shut up and tell me!

you'll take it out of context!

    Love it!

  • Love my old man! Tommy is too much! Glad we got to see them a few years ago :)

  • Love my old man!

  • One of the best shows on TV at that time and they kept getting shut down. Things are so different now. I didn't know anyone who was offended by anything they said and there was no foul language. Still love them - I hope they live to be 100.

  • 8 people knew Gort Smothers.

  • @thomas221100 he says it at 3:17 too.

  • "You sure talk dirty since you got hair on your lip." LOL

  • it was nixon who stopped this show

  • it nixon who stopped this show

  • Still Great Today!!!

  • This always made me laugh

  • I think its so cute when tommy wants to be a sailor. He is so adorable it smy dream to meet them someday.!!!

  • he definetly say chicken fuckers at 3:40

  • @thomas221100 he definately didn't even get to "chicken pluckers" when he was saying it at that time...

  • What was the name of the bit when Tommy whines about never having a pet dog, but got a chicken instead? And he ate it because it wouldnt bark? Hilarious! "Oh yeah?" That's my snappy comeback!

  • Way too funny!

    Almost died lol

  • I love them.

  • Whoa faggot is a strong word!!

  • I remember listening to this as a kid and i dont remember that 'nergo' part =/

  • If he was a nudist would he even wear anything???

  • @fopper156887 I thought I was the only one who wondered that :D

  • @fopper156887 thats the joke

  • I was so bummed! Last time I was in Laughlin, I went to the Riverside with my dad to see a movie, and when I asked when the Smothers Brothers would be playing again, they told me that they were retired! Oh man! And I never got to see them live.

  • @welltonred I dunno. They played the Keswick Theatre outside of Philly last year.

  • @welltonred I dunno. They played the Keswick Theatre outside of Philly last year.

  • chicken fucker, lol

  • I like the version with the refrigerator repairman who reads the playboy better than negro or nudist.

  • @mcmillspiece Hahaha :D

  • Now I know who will ferrell copies

  • 1:30 thank god this didnt hapen today

  • Negro is no different than Asian or Caucasian, what's the difference in any time or occasion? Hey, I'm a poet and I don't know it!

  • I AM A BLACK FEMALE AND FIND NO OFFENSE TO THIS SKIT LAUGH AND ENJOY!!!- DAMN!!! LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE (PARDON THER PUN)

  • @BROOKLYNBRENDA Bless You!!! I don't think the Smothers had a malicious bone in their bodies...but it was a transitional period, no doubt.

  • Tommy's facial expressions were sooooooooo incredible!!!! Without speaking so much as a word, his face could tell so many stories.

  • I'm laughing so hard I'm crying. I remember watching them sing this on TV when I was a kid. Thanks for posting it!

  • @KarenSDR I also remember seeing this episode. My favorite one of all.

  • I remember this routine. I missed them after CBS axed them, but I was lucky that my Mom had nearly all of their records.

  • Pat Paulsen for President.

  • I remember watching them in the late 80's when their show came back on during the writers' guild strike. So funny.

  • I always wondered if Flight Of The Conchords took inspiration from these guys.

  • I had no idea "fruit" was ever a bad word even then...

  • gay

  • i remember watching them as a kid, and also being upset when they were shut down !

  • Good thing he didn't say pheasant plucker.

  • Did they censor the word "freak"?

  • @unusuallynormal231 I think "fruit."

  • The Smothers Brothers broke ground and were shut down by the government thru CBS.

    God bless em.

  • @gonzobuc1 I absolutely love your comment. Smothers Brothers broke ground, and scared a lot of official people, so the suits shut them down. But they are not truly gone, nor forgotten. I was young when their great show was on the air, and now I am not so young (62 yrs old), but I have not forgotten, and am delighted to be able to see them here now. They were right-on true then. and I think I appreciate them even more now. Long live Smothers Brothers!

  • @gonzobuc1 They weren't dumb....They knew exactly what the sensitive issues of the time were. They were just unwilling to compromise their values in order to get rich quick....They certainly had the ratings, and that's validation enough, but they probably didn't worry much about that either!

  • @gonzobuc1 Because CBS sucks. Sorry. But these guys were - whoa!

  • @oYoYebutu Craig Ferguson himself says it, and he has been working for them for years - so he certainly knows what he is talking about.

  • @gonzobuc1 By the government. Right... LOL

  • @gonzobuc1 CBS controlled by the government? Considering the last 2 and a half years, I would believe that.

  • lol "youre a fascist" hahaha

  • Wow!

  • That's Gold Jerry, ...Gold!! What great timing, So funny. Glad I got to see them 2 years ago as they retired this spring.

  • OMG! LOL.

Tom: SAY HE WEARS A BRA!

    Dick: Lower your voice.

Tom: (deep voice) Say he wears a bra....

  • Political Correctness has crippled comedy today. Even with the comedians we have today, they have lines they won't cross, this song does the same thing I do with thinking outside the box. They think there isn't a line at all.

  • What a great show it was.

  • How about a nudist negro?

  • This was during the Civil Rights marches of the 60's. I remember it well, even though it never made it to the album.

FYI: The composer of this particular song was interviewed a few years ago. The song was originally 7 verses long.

  • I love these guys...remember watching their show with my dad.

  • I like the Wayans Brothers version of them better on" In Living Color ".

  • I saw them last year in Trenton, NJ and they're still funny! Thanks for the laughs!

  • great harmony wow

  • Anyone who views this as racist is missing the point.

  • Comment removed

  • RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is a hell of a song!

I see why they got canceled.

  • Hmm. His father wears a nudist's collar, nudist's hat, nudist's raincoat, nudist's shoes .. not a very good nudist is he?

  • @TheZhayne LOL... I have this on my favorites list...and I must admit I never thought of it that way before..Good Point!!!

  • lol, this looks like its been filmed now to look like its from the 60's/70's like anchorman!

  • @dauboi Are you really that dumb...? This WAS filmed in the late 60's,

  • @2009justincredible What i said was, it's like it's been filmed recently and made to look like it was filmed in the 60's, i realise it was filmed in the 60's it just reminds me of Anchorman. :)

  • @dauboi Sorry, just checking...with people these days, you never know! lol

  • I don't remember this one. I saw all the shows and never saw this particular one.

I do have the album, but "negro" isn't on the song. At this time of history, it would've been a really BIG mistake, no matter how funny they were.

Actually, this episode DID play on TV. I remember it well. It was right about this time that the TV series "Laugh In" was starting to brush with jokes that involved races. Then, in 1971, "All In The Family" took the nation by storm.

  • "Your old man's a f-!" Surely they didn't use the word "fag," but I have trouble believing they'd censor the word "fruit"...

  • @DanishCartoonist When they do this on Carson, they edit out the term 'fruit cake' too.

  • @DanishCartoonist I am fairly certain they did not, in the original broadcast. That was more likely edited out before it made it here, after political correctness really got into full swing. The only political correctness on TV back then was the kind where you didn't piss anyone off in power. They did. That's why they were canceled. It was only a few years after this show that Fred Sanford called a librarian a fruit cake, and he wasn't censored.

  • @TheSentientParadox

you're right, I'm currently reading a book called Dangerously Funny, which recounts the history of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, right from its premiere to its cancellation, due to pressure from the Nixon administration. It's amazing and downright frightening on how much power politicians had back in the 60s

  • @TVFREAKMAN Yup. Odd though. Thought I was replying to Danish Cartoonist.

  • @TheSentientParadox Never mind. Guess I was.

  • @TVFREAKMAN save me the trouble of finding and reading the book, how'd Nixon take these guys out?

  • @amaconstr

The Nixon administration basically harrassed the CBS network, with constant threats to terminate its broadcasting license. At this point (1969) THe smother's brother's comedy hour had slipped in the ratings, so the network not wanting to put up with the aggravation, simply cancelled the show.

  • @TVFREAKMAN Fucking Tricky Dick,we musta really scared him,did Rahm Emanuel's dad work for him, sounds like what they're trying to do to Fox and Beck:)

  • @TVFREAKMAN Actually it was President Johnson who didn't like it.

  • anybody know the chords to this?

  • @HippieGuitarBoy My old man's an engineer. He doesn't wear cords.

    Sorry. Couldn't help it.

  • They were so funny, we just won a album from them made in 1963

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Funny thing is they barely knew their father. He was killed in WWII, in the Batan death march.

  • Actually, he survived the death march, but was killed aboard a Japanese prison transport ship (attacked by the U.S., accidentally) - at least according to David Bianculli's new book on the brothers.

  • That's really not that funny, acutally.

  • How many times can i watch this and not laugh?

  • @MrCasable: i wonder the same thing, paul!

  • is this from "mom always liked you best"?

  • When I was a kid my family watched this show every Sunday night and all laughed together and enjoyed the variety of guests. They don't make TV like this anymore. It showed opposite of Bonanza which was number one for several seasons....until the Smothers Brothers came around!

  • How is negro any worse a word than black, white, etc.? Yeah, it's somewhat antiquated now, but really...

  • @skipplet he wasn't being PC, he was being accurate.

  • @skipplet its not that at the time that was the term used.

  • @skipplet I agree. "Negro" was never used as a racist term. It's just that now it's old-fashioned - but this is an old show.

  • @skipplet negro is a Spanish word for black...just as nior is a french word for black, and Caucasians come from a region over by Russia! I do not consider myself a caucasian...I'm a very proud to be a Polish-United States American.

  • @pjezierski it's "noir" le mot c'est "noir", c'est pas "nior".

  • It was before racism was wrong

  • wrong or acknowldged?

  • Actually, it was a political statement which he was making because it was during the time of MLK Jr. UHH btw racism has always been wrong.

  • @OutrunTheWolf correction: it was before every word that had any reference at all to any race was considered racist. how is saying that someone is black racist if the colour of their skin is actually black? saying it and implying that it's bad to be black is a different story of course, but i don't think he had any intention of being racist

  • they said negro on tv????

  • Just saw S.B. on The Simpsons and then was compelled to sing the entire "anthropologist" verse for my 16-year-old son. Glad to find the whole thing here by this great pair. When I saw the episode, I didn't understand the deal about being careful singing the plucker verse, but I thought "bra" was so funny that I had to leave the room and laugh in private. Thanks for posting!

  • cos its sounds like chicken fucker

  • gosh, I will bet that you are the only one who got that.

  • This so funny!!

  • The classics are still the best.

  • the guitar player reminds me a lot of Will Ferrell haha

  • Will wishes he was as funny or talented as Tommy Smothers. What a chicken plucker.

  • geez i just think they're similar. i didn't say will was better or nothin

2 thumbs down and a negative reply

    ='(

  • I haven't seen this since it aired, however many years ago that way!! I forgot how funny this was. These guys are great! I forgot the, "that's why Mom like you better."

Thanks for posting this Mr., big time!!! Got any more?

  • I actually remember seeing this episode as a kid! Of course the conotations were lost on my young mind...

  • "Why don't you be a..."

    HAHAHAHA

  • lol he said "fruit" and it was censored! lol

  • I guess that was a "freak"

  • I can't believe I had never heard of these guys. I've spent most of the week watching clips. So hilarious!

  • LOL I laughed a lot about the "nudist" and the "Cotton pickin finger lickin chicken plucker". :D

    This sure was funny :D

  • LMFAO. This is so hilarious. These are my boys. xD

  • 'Mom always liked you best' Ha ha

  • I think I heard them say this was what got their show cancelled

  • The "negro" thing would have got them in even more trouble these days. They go "grandfathered" out.

  • "you sure talk dirty since you got hair on your lip...".."...>.>...." lol well im 18 and this is just hilarious

i just recently started watching this and i love their act hehe

  • Steve Martin used to write for them....... I wonder if the " my old man's a negro " turned into" I was born a poor black child " in The Jerrk ???

  • Interesting theory!

  • They were oh sooooooooooo funny! Not PC, but very funny.

  • thats funny im 14 and thats funny

  • wats tommy say at 5:39?

  • He says "your man is a fruit" Fruit= Homosexuell

  • I thought he said "fag".

  • I think he said "fruit" Big Deal. Take a joke, Nancys.

  • "fruit"
