@MEPScare yep, and I'll give my patients enough drugs to stone em 4 hrs at a time. Respiration a - 8, good SpO2, wake up and follow, neuro checks. Bed alarm on. Good to go!
this was my sister..she took her life due to addiction to pain meds...20 years ago doctors. perscribed like it was candy...it is on recently that its now.considered a real problem...all i ever heard from my sis was its prescribed so.its ok.......now.she is gone
50% of people who get prescribed opiate painkillers will become addicted, even if they take them as directed. 50% of these people will like how these pills make them feel because they are given heroin by the doctors. So whos fault is it really that people like this come into the ER wanting more?? If doctors give opiates to patients, then of course theyre going to want more, you're giving them heroin for crying out loud. Lets stop treating pain patients with life ruining drugs and use Ibuprophen.
I had a patient say once at 5 am (who I admitted then, for ambien abuse), "If I don't get my ambien, I'm going to have seizures." I took ambien for a month to help me sleep during the day, and I assure you...going off it won't cause seizures. But if you mix alcohol, other drugs, and ambien like my patient did...ya just might!!
@lilmoomoo Ah true! I was on it about a wk or so(I was on other meds at the time and did not mix them with the Ambien) and one night, I remember going to bed, then woke up 6hrs later in the ER and at first, they thought I OD'd so after taking blood, my levels were normal and the cause was "bad mix of medication" and apparently the ER Attending has seen this also happen which is why I'm amazed it isn't crosschecked more thoroughly
The truly SAD thing is in my 20 years of experience as a nurse, I have heard all these demands from patients and the cigarette comments are soooo true. No patient should ever be permitted to leave for a cigarette. If they are well enough to smoke and go outside they are well enough to be outside the hospital setting. I wish the public and hospital administrators would stop treating hospitals as if they are hotels.
@lisarntravels So do your job, tell the patient they cannot go, and offer them a nicotine patch, that was what they did for me when I was admitted, although I didnt ask to smoke, I was OFFERED the patch when she found out I was a smoker.
Ha ha ha this is so true! I worked in an orthopedic surgeons office and patients would come in all the time claiming to have back pain and they always said that they were allergic to everything except for the strongest pain meds! You can usually spot these types of patients the second they walk in the door.
I am now working in a hospital which does not allow patients to leave the floor, an ICU in fact.

The patients I was referring to refused the patch and wanted to continue to smoke.
