  • That was amazing!

  • Which part is Al singing? Is he doubled with someone?

  • for those of you who don't know much about musical instruments and electronics i will inform you of what the vocals of the Beach Boys are like...their harmonies are the equivalent of an Eventide harmonizing pedal, which is an electronic pedal that automatically keeps guitar parts or vocal parts in perfect machine tight harmony..that is the musical vocal prowess of these 4 gentlemen's vocals ! in other words,PERFECT HUMAN VOCAL ABILITY !

    !

  • @blica1Well said my friend.

  • This is a good clip, however, you've got it BACKWARDS.....this is an a cappella

    (VOCALS only) segment...

Where is the "Stack-O-Tracks" cut having JUST instruments? Hmmm.....

  • recently heard Mike Love and The Beach Boys in Richmond,VA-the band did an admirable job with the hits.Heard them thirty five years ago at William and Mary Hall-wish I had the recording then. They were great. Many of the great acts such as the Temptations ,Boyz to Men, do a great job of harmonizing as well.Great video-very innocent days back then.

  • i don't know i LOVE the Beach Boys but the Allman Brothers are right up there boss...

  • The greatest American band ever, hands down...

  • Love this!

  • Thanks for sharing. I haven't seen this clip before. :-)

  • What voices!

  • Great song and I'm only 26. You know who else did a great job with this song is Brian Wilson's two daughters Carnie and Wendy Wilson. The Wilson family can really sing.

  • What a masterpiece! How did Brian Wilson do it?

  • IT was in 1976,I think. When the Boys Played with Kiss in Nassau County. Dennis, not long before his death,Sang,You are so beautiful to me.It brought the house down.

  • The Beach boys have touuched everyybody Diana Ross is even a big fan

  • Brian may have been a lunatic, but a talented one. He was that band.

  • carl looks naked without his guitar

  • One of my favorite songs!!

  • Brian's baby face <3 :D

  • One of my favorites! Thanks for posting!

  • why is it called instrumental back but in the description you say its strings instead of instrumental backing lol

  • Beautiful

  • Outstanding!

  • Believe it or not I saw this when it aired and even though they seemed nervous I was absolutely blown away by their harmonies and Brian,s writing. Peace

  • Wonderful harmony!

  • A UNIQUE PERFORMANCE--LOCKED IN TIME FOR THE AGES

  • Brian is a whacked out genius..even here.

  • The Best American Band Ever! AE

  • Little known bit of trivia one of their biggest fans Diana Ross

  • @coolsweetgroovy I did not know that.

  • @peterzang Yes it's true watch Brain's tribute from the 07 Kennedy Ceter honors(it's posted here) and while watching keep your eyes on Diana

  • @coolsweetgroovy Not really surprised. At her peak, a truly great and musical singer, who probably appreciates all the good stuff.

  • Comment removed

  • @coolsweetgroovy Keep posting those Beach Boys rarities. I am indebted. My favorite group.

  • @peterzang Ok P.S. Did you know that The Supremes did the answer song to The Beach Boys Surfer Girl? unfortunatley the vid was taken down yesterday

  • @peterzang Sorry about my typo what i meant to say about Miss ross is that she'll dance to anyones music did you see her at 2010 Kennedy Center honors? can't wait for this years

  • They all lookalike TV newsanchors I'd sure love to see male news anchors like this now this is sexy

  • One of my many Beach Boys songs RIP Dennis and Carl I also love how they're dressed Awe the good old days

  • The ANTHEM for all broken-hearted teenagers.

  • Dennis is my hero, sure he made alot of wrong choices with his friends, drugs, women, and alcohol. I've always been a person who looks inside. Inside him was the most purest soul one could ever imagine finding. I don't care what you think you know about him, if all you can say is negative then you didn't know him at all. He was a positive voice in this life. RIP Dennis.

  • Love this clip! Brian @0:30, I'm not really going to read this book so I'll just put it here; Brian @ 0:41...Denny, you still here? Good. Brian @ 1:00, I'll just make myself more comfy...there, that's better!

He makes it impossible to look away from him. I don't want to miss what he's going to do next :)

  • @LoveThoseTunes1 I agree

  • In My Room

    In my room

I am a king of whores

I make love to every idea and every cause

So that when I dream there is no sleep

Because I have no Promises to keep...

    M. S. Morrison

  • Dennis Wilson was the "bad boy" of the group which has always been part of the formula for heartthrob, guy-groups. He was self destructive, ie drugs, involvement with the Manson girls....

He was my favorite, though. Pull up the movie, "Two Lane Blactop"

  • This is just rad. Setting, song, preformance.

  • mike love is not needed here. at all

  • @truthasfineprint this is what i give mike credit for. His bass voice is fantastic, and was really important to the blend. In fact, what brian's current band is missing is a strong bass voice.

  • This humbles me.

  • NO one will ever top the beach boys sound.thay will always be the best. I love the

Beach Boys and thank them for there sound that i love so much . THANKS BOYS

    And lot's of love

  • Could you please reconsider the naming of this video? Your use of "(instrumental backing)" had me thinking of a "Stack O Tracks" treatment. It turns out that what we have here is indeed the vocals with a different instrumental backing from what we are accustomed to.

Seated: Brian Wilson (far left), Al Jardine (far right). Standing (L to R): Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson.

  • Why do people consider Mike Love a jerk?

  • @PlaneAndTVtechfan: Only a few people feel this way and they are being petty. You may comfortably ignore such people.

  • @PlaneAndTVtechfan HE WAS AND STILL IS IN-SECURE..JEALOUS OF BRIAN....THE THREE WILSON BROTHERS GOT THE ATTENSION...THO HE WAS A COUSIN.....PEOPLE DID'NT SEE THIS....ONLY THE BROTHERS...THEN , HE HAS TO SUE BRYAN....COME ON....LISTEN TO ALL THE BEACH BOY "LIVE" RECORDINGS...YOU CAN HEAR MIKE THROW SOME DIGS AROUND....

  • ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS BY THE BEACH BOYS !!! GREAT HARMONY !!!!

  • about when was this made?

  • For me, it's 1965 again!

  • This song gave me insight into Brian Wilson way back when I first heard it in the 60's. It also showed that he had insight into me. Thanks for all the soul stirring songs of youth, Boys. You were a big part of us.

  • I never noticed how amazing Carl was until after he died.

I always thought just it was just Brian.

But after Carl died I started looking at his stuff and realized how underestimated and unnoticed he was.

How the heck did I miss how great Carl was all that time ?

Carl was developing into something fantastic.

Had he not died so early it would have been realized.

What a voice he had and such a beautiful person.

RIP Carl you are greatly missed.

  • Actually,...I think they look and sound just as great as they always did!!

  • Very good

  • so they were talking then suddenly they start singing

  • @peterpan5031 thats how it always goes with the beach boys.

    :P

  • @okaytrees it is? i ban listening to then and knowing dennis willaon and other stuff and i never ever seen or heard them do this

  • @peterpan5031 ben i mean

  • @peterpan5031 I think this was actually taken from a documentary. Brian was speaking and they cut him off when the clip started.

  • Sad to say but Brien Wilson's depression made him a genius.

  • great song listened to this many night's in my room !! beach boy's number one forever !!!

  • The natural harmony of the three brothers plus Brian's arrangements, leadership and teaching ability yielded outstanding results.

  • Great song; outstanding harmonizing!

  • I don't get the den, but I guess it would've look odd with them all sitting on Brian's bed. :)

  • The Beach Boys piss over the Four Freshmen from a great height.

  • yes^^^

  • those aren't sweaters, you terrible dipshit.

  • that is a great tune!

  • Miss you Den.

  • hark the herald angels sing! i so love the BB's.....nothing even remotely like them on planet earth.

  • Wow 3 sons in 4 years and all working before they are 18!

  • I was aware of the BB's but it was IMR that made me first realize there was something extra special in their music and made me a fan.

  • Which one of them is Mike Love?

  • From left to Right:

    Brian Wilson (sitting on left)

Carl Wilson (standing on the left)

Mike Love (standing in the middle)

Dennis Wilson (standing on the right)

    Al Jardine (sitting on right)

  • Thank you

  • when brian's falsetto voice comes in and harmonizes that part at 1:15 it makes my day.

  • without doubt the best romantic song they ever sang. rock on 50's music. the groups are still the baddest on the planet. the harmony is fantastic!!!

  • This song came out in '63...

  • OMG, those first few seconds where Brian's voice is alone... so beautiful. His voice was very haunting...

  • their dad really pushed the wilsons very harshly, but in turn, made brian one of the most brilliant singer, songwriters ever, along with his brothers !!.even.paul mcartney was quite envious of the harmonies and arrangements on the pet sounds album !!..and brian of sgt.peppers !!

  • what a harmony!.. that's a real music!

  • They had tremendous Harmony and talent. Too bad they had an abusive influence like Murray Wilson (the father), who was living through them in trying to make them perfect.

  • This is one of the most precious of all the Beach Boys songs. It captures, a capella, that very special emotion, of what it was like to be young in America in the 1960s. Beautiful.

  • The Beach Boys are the greatest group in American music history.

They created new sounds and "Pet Sounds" and so much more.

    I love them.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • see they can look neat e tidy

  • I hadn't seen this in a long time and was thrilled to see that it's live, what great harmonies.

  • i just love their harmony...its so beautiful

  • Brian Wilson is easily the most talented and influential music maker of the last half-century. Composition, arangements and performing, he did it all. Sure, the other Beach Boys were great but Brian could have surrounded himself with any other band mates and he still would have produced magic. No other singular person had the ability to musically touch your soul like Brian Wilson.

  • I don't know if you are giving the other boys credit as far as the singing goes. Their voices just fit so perfectly. You can't reproduce that with "any other band mates." Sure, you could do that for the music itself, as he did with "The Wrecking Crew" on Pet Sounds, but it's not the Beach Boys without the rest of them.

  • I did not mean to discredit the other guys and I don't think i did ("the other Beach Boys were great"). I do stand by what I said. Brian would have still been magical without them although perhaps not quite at that same level. By contrast, McCartney or Lennon would have been far less without the others and George Martin. By the way, I met Dennis in the late seventies and spent about an hour around him. He was a really nice guy, friendly and professional with everyone.

  • Brian is fantastic! He did have his George Martin - his dad. He also had the Wrecking Crew and the harmony of the other BB's. He didn't write the majority of the lyrics on BB songs.(Just ask Mike- LOL) He would have been far less without them. McCartney and Lennon did quite well on their own. All of them would have been less without their helpers.

  • His dad? Murry deserves credit for launching their careers and leading them during their earliest years. He quickly became intrusive and disruptive to a point where Brian fired him. George Martin had no equal in the studio except for possibly Brian himself.

  • All that's true but his dad, although a scumbag, taught Brian music. After that his time with Phil Spector completed his "George Martin influence"

Regardless, Brian and George are both in first place with crazy ole Phil as second. I am considering Jeff Lynne as third.

Musically I don't think we will ever see the likes of anyone to replace them. I feel like I lived in the golden age of music and feel sorry for kids today.

  • Agreed.

  • @breezebro oops i missed all this talk after. I'd be careful at giving murray credit for what he taught him musically. He may have taught him piano, but everything else brian learned on his own. Murray's music styles were from an older generation. Brian was cutting edge

  • caats19, I know Murray was a creep and an older style of music but I think he is the one who taught Brian how to "hear" music. Of course he also had natural talent but I think people tend to disregard Murray's influence cause he was so detestable. Phil is a creep, but he too had a big influence on Brian.

  • beyond that he was a creep. he had amounted to nothing musically.

  • I think The Four Freshmen records had profound influence on Brian. Brian absolutely copied their arrangent style at first. What a gift from the Universe he and the whole group have been to so many lives/ JHP

  • I share that feeling of sorrow for kids today.

  • @westentrance MR. NICK VENET GAVE THE BOYS THEIR START..NOT MURRAY...IF MURRAY GAVE THE BOYS THEIR START THEY WOULD OF GONE SOUTH LIKE THE SUNRAYS.....SORRY BYRON CASE AND RICK HENN....THE SUNRAYS WERE GREAT.....BUT CAPITOL RECORDS WANTED BRIAN AND CREW

  • @MALTOMEEGE They recorded with other record companys before they had any contact with venet he was michael landons roomate and he got him some bit parts acting as indians in tv westerns [ murry had the president of capitol get rid of venet].

  • @breezebro the dad was not a producer like Martin. just a manager (gone in 64). Brian took over as producer in 63 till 1967. And don't think those lyrics came solely from collaborators. There's a reason Tony Asher helped write Pet Sounds and nothing else. he was just channeling what Brian wanted. Brian wrote, sang, arranged, engineered and produced their best records. so don't say he would have been less without them. w/o them he did pet sounds. they would be nothing.

  • @breezebro

    are you nuts?

his dad was more his yoko than his george martin, he was a like yoko a musically untalented pain in the ass.

  • @OropherThranduil Yeah, the creep Murray did get Brian started in the studio. Brian went on to drop most of what he learned from Murray. Even a genius young kid like Brian walking in off the street into a recording studio had to have someone show him the ropes to the point where he could work on his own.

  • You are correct when you say the most talented and influential. It was Brian who Wrote, composed and arranged the music and especially the vocals and harmonies. What beatiful arrangements he created and YES....He could have done that with any other talented singers because of his talents!

  • yes we are blessed. and i can be in my room

  • Aren't we just so blessed to be able to have access to such gems as this piece of footage (which DVD is this from ? I've got it, but the name escapes me momentarily). Man, BW does this song so effortlessly ; yet it was one of his earliest most-recognised absolute-classics. Every great rock-music star of any worth, that I've ever heard comment on Brian & The Boys (e.g. Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Elton, Paul, amongst many), has remarked how much of an early stand-out song this one was.

  • Colindominy: I totally agree with you. BW was not only a classic songwriter/arranger/singer etc but there was a certain humility about him that endeared him to me. Plus I thought he was the cutest (and Dennis too). Speaking of other artists who regard BW in high esteem add to that list Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues who did a cover of God Only Knows from Pet Sounds. He thought BW was brilliant. Many musicians consider Pet Sounds as one of the best albums ever done.

  • These guys are PIMP.

  • Instrumental?

  • the ending gives me chills, beautiful song.

  • Helter: That high note that Brian hits at the very end gives me chills....I can't think of a better ending for this song. Brian is so talented...I can't say enough good things about him.

  • Helter: You are more than welcome and you are a breath of fresh air since a lot of people lately have written me back with comments that are rude and unnecessary. You sound like a very nice person. Peace and take care.

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard! their voices are so heavenly!!!

  • Woah! Great version.

  • The Beatles and The Beach Boys are the best groups of the 60s.. Just love both groups styles. WeI still have the original vinyl albums and 45 rmp at my father's home. They were my older brother's favorites. It is sad that my brother died at 21 in 1971 just before he turned 22. We still have is entire collection intact, but we still miss him a lot. He was the greatest guy!!

  • @cboncklis Sorry about your brother. But I think its a good thing that you have this music to connect you with your brother's memory. That's a beautiful thing. :)

  • Wonderful version with the strings behind.

Fine decent boys and the best vocal harmony singing group ever. Well dressed and no piercings nor tattoos like

today's youngsters. Early 60's: best era

  • Don't forget that Brian Wilson was taking a great deal of acid and other mind-altering drugs at this time.

  • Tylerr3950: Screw the acid..most musicians were high on something or other. It was not unusual...you will find that most musicians and artists are prone to take drugs; most artistic people are very sensitive and thus likely to take drugs to either dull their highly sensitive sentiments or to enhance their inherent talent...so pls understand that it is just part of being a musician....esp one as talented as the genius known as Brian Wilson

  • I wasn't criticizing Brian Wilson for taking drugs, I was responding to atletico45's comment about how "clean-cut" and "decent" the Beach Boys and other early 60's acts were because in reality that was mostly a front used to promote them. Brian Wilson is indeed a genius.

  • most talented person perhaps in the history of music making.

  • FatherofMan25: Totally agree. Brian will go down in history as one of the most talented musicians/composers/arrangers/singers of our time.....So lucky for us to have lived during this era.

  • absolutely. not only was he a completely genius composer, but a brilliant singer and musician and producer. just not fair. he had everything going against him too. abusive father, horrible bandmates. he was keeping up with the beatles (mccartney, lennon AND george martin.) all by himself with people all around him going against him.

  • brian couldnt have done it without the rest of his bandmates i disagree that he had horrible bandmates.

  • what did they do?

  • gave harmony and the beach boy sound u cant just say brian was everything he couldnt have done it without them

  • have you heard brian wilson live at the roxy? his current band is 1000x better than the beach boys were. you think mike love did anything that any average person off the street couldn't have done?

  • Soxlotus: Yes you are absolutely right. All of them contributed to form the unique sound that was the Beach Boy sound. Even though Brian was the most talented and the most creative I don't think he could have formed another group with different members. I posed this question online some time ago. Can anyone think of any other group that could harmonize like the BB or BeeGees and NOT be related? I have yet to get an answer. I feel that the genetic component is very important when harmonizing.

  • thanks

  • Not really, according to the Smile DVD Brian took LSD for the first time in 1965, an hour before he wrote California Girls (which he finished in 1/2 hour). There was no mention of them doing it regularly after that, though we know they smoked lots of pot and later cocaine.

  • This was in 1963. He wasn't doing the drugs at that time. His drug experimentation didn't happen until LATE 1964, early '65.

  • What a classy time in music. Fine upstanding young gentlemen.

  • ...then came the drugs.

  • My boys!!!!! GO BEACH BOYS!!!! Love you guys forever!!! Brian, your just adorable:)

I think todays artists could use a major music lesson from The Beach Boys.

  • They look uncomfortable in the tie & suit frat boy image situation they were forced into because of the times. When they were on Andy Williams it was almost as sad.

On British tv they got to sing live, play their instruments and were a lot looser and let go, great fun tapes to watch.

Great American music of the era live on British tv because Americans were such prudes they wanted Pat Boone clones! LOL.

The Beach Boys are still America's Band for everyone.

  • Dennis looks so uncomfortable is this.

Like just get me outta here.

    LOL

  • pardon me- new fan- which one is that?

  • @musicbymicky Dennis is standing far right with his hand on the chair

  • thank you.

  • @zebratangozebra thats because this was right after a huge huge fight with his dad. his dad kicked him out of the band and brian begged his dad for his return

  • @dasuit15 BRIAN NEVER BEGGED HIS DAD FOR ANY THING, WELL, MAYBE ONE THING AND THAT'S TO LEAVE THEM ALONE......BRIAN WAS NOT AFRAID OF HIS DAD...YOU'LL HEAR THIS FROM ONES WHO KNOW...BRIAN PUNCHED HIS DAD OUT OUT SIDE THE CAPITOL RECORDS BUILDING......" THE MANY MOODS OF MURRAY WILSON" HAD TO CATCH UP WITH HIM

  • @zebratangozebra -

Dennis was the "Surfer" of the group-

also He usually played Drums so... He may be nervous

because all he has to do is stand & sing-

  • @zebratangozebra DENNIS WILSON AND MIKE LOVE NEVER EVER GOT ALONG......I'M NOT AT LIBERTY TO SAY WHY......LET DEAD DOGS LIE SO TO SPEAK....

  • @MALTOMEEGE - what do you mean 'you're not at liberty to say'? Why do you think you're telling us anything we don't already know and (most importantly) WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

  • @prescient8 FIRST OF ALL, I'M NOT SHOUTING.....AND IF ALL OF YOU'S KNOW...THATS GREAT...SO, I DON'T HAVE TO WRITE IT...

  • @MALTOMEEGE i know EXACTLY why. Dennis Wilson was cool, and Mike Love wasn't.

  • @MALTOMEEGE Oh, come on. Tell. We know Dennis and Mike had at least one onstage fight. Fill us in. If you're afraid of Mike suing you, I understand. But it'll eventually come out. Why not be the one who breaks it?

  • @zebratangozebra He wants to be drumming Look at his hands!

  • @zebratangozebra so true!

  • Wonderful music!

  • this is so good, all generations should love this. God Bless the boys

  • one of the best songs of all time performed by the best group of all time

  • Im looking forward to the time when i live without leaving my house. pot and food is all you need.

  • dam hippy.

  • Rock On!

  • brian wilson is so paranoid! he looks to the left like 80 time!!! it's immense though i love the beach boys and i'm 17!!

  • I think he was looking at Dennis to see if he was still there or had bolted.

  • its been years since i even thought about the beach boys...ahhh,brings back childhood memories...

  • Dennis looks like Bobby Darin.

  • Now THAT"S harmony. These guys could very well sing this without instruments and still sound great.

  • was this song is so nostalgic...makes me think bout the old days as a kid...

  • i love this song.

    im only 13. ha.

but i like this old stuff.

my grandad told me to listen to it.

    when i was really down.

    and i loved it.

  • My grandfather told me: "The older you get the faster time passes." He was right. We can learn a lot from the older generations. Check out The Collins Kids.

  • The Beach Boys - In My Room,The Beatles - Because. I think, these songs show that both band was a great chorus group.

  • The famous song you reference "Because" was not a Beatles song. It was a hit by another British invasion band called The Dave Clark Five. Great song though.

  • you're speaking of a different "Because" than the one on Abbey Road I assume?

  • I was speaking of the hugely popular song often attributed by fans to the Beatles, but actually a top 5 charted US hit in 1964 by the Dave Clark Five.

  • This is very different that the single and LP version with the strings and vocal track... these boys can sing.

  • I named my son BRIAN after our dear genious, it might have done him well, now he is playing Mozart sonatas.

Yeah this is different from the record, but algo great.

  • cool, lucky kid
