Methinks people have different image of what a genuine dandy is; Most over portray his image on account of narratives never admitting of having independent quiddity, look and mien -- A phenomenon suspiciously having something to do with the so-called bunker mentality. If ye ''need'' a dandy ye unswervingly look some fancy author's description of him.
Sebastian is splendid, but he isnt a dandy. Dandyism is the opposite of extremity, which is exactly what Sebastian is about. Dandyism is subdued and stylish, as opposed to extravagant and garish.
@unnaturaltragedy: While being a fop and dressing badly tends to go hand in hand, being a fop means that you follow fashion. Horsley obviously doesn't follow fashion, instead, like mentioned, he is the epitome of extremity.
@unnaturaltragedy me too, dandies didn't really believe in such vibrant clothes that would gain attention. Look at Beau Brummell, he wouldn't be caught dead in that

Charles Baudelaire said, "A dandy can never be a vulgar man." Sebastian is an entertaining man capable of a great deal of wit yet he is not a dandy. His vulgarity and his eccentricity exclude him from that philosophy known as dandyism. Call him a punk with a dandyish flair, but don't call him a dandy. He just isn't that.
"Every dandy dares, but he stops at the intersection between originality and eccentricity." — Barbey D'Aurevilly
Until Barbey's 1844 Du Dandysme et de George Brummell, the dandy was associated with the fop. The dandy according to Barbey and later, Baudelaire, was a different breed which, thanks to Barbey and Baudelaire made the dandy into something more than social climbing man of style. Just look at the type of dandy who came in their wake, Benjamin Disraeli, Jean Lorrain, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Symons, and Max Beerbohm are just a few who come to mind. Sebastian has little in common with true dandyism.
the truth is that we are all dandies it is just us dandies sebastian and i have been enlightened yes realised the TRUTH all you phonies out there reality is the biggest illusion vulgares
Charles Baudelaire would be proud; dandyism lives!...Check out my video wherein I blow dry my tongue and then eat a cracker all while acting like a surfer dude...
No, Horsley, when you walk into a room, people go "there's that noisy, vulgar narcissist who spends his money on heroin and whores". But I'm sure you take whatever attention you can get.
What the bloody... you sir, lack about 5 out of 6 characteristics essential to the true dandy. Why yes you're crap and indeed you're a fake. Insulting to say the least...
Just found you and lost you. RIP my friend.

What would Baudelaire know anyway?
Ququog 3 years ago
Quite a bit considering he wrote about the dandyism in philosophical terms, which I'm sure is something even Sebastian would tell you about.

Well chosen quotes! But Barbey d'Aurevilly and Baudelaire weren't real dandies themselves.
"Dandies are the children of enriched janitors or fallen dukes. They are seeking revenge."-Charles Dantzig
