idk if this is for iphones too but on the itouch u can press the home button twice and this menu pops up with pause/play,next song, and previous song. much easier than voice control to pause.

Now you are right about the focus, but the iPhone has by far the best voice recognizer. I've had other phones where the phone will not understand simple phrases and will put it's own accent on contact names and will not recognize them unless you say it the same way the phone chooses to.
