Leave it to the planet, it is much simpler. Step one, starve humans with failing crops. Step two, make heat waves capable of killing millions. Step three, mutate viruses capable of bringing billions of humans to an early death. Step four, evolve another mammal with better capabilities than the previous humans. Step five, start all over again for the next 200 million years. See, the planet is much more resilient and can take care of herself, we only need to die and she'll be fine :)
