Peter Gabriel seems like a cheeseball to me (nice outfit!) and is in that sort of Sting/music for yuppies category, but man, Manu makes these songs so darn interesting. And I suspect Levin's prodigious talent is partially responsible for pushing him to the heights he reached on this tour.
Manu Katche. Over-Rated. For all of you who are jizzing over him and claiming him to be the greatest drummer ever, see Mr Dave Weckl, Mr Vinnie Colaiuta and Mr Teddy Campbell.....
Those who can, do - those who can't, sit around and criticize / disrespect on YouTube.
I think it likely that Mr. Weckl, Mr. Colaiuta, and Mr. Campbell (along with Mr Bruford, Mr. Mastelotto, Mr. Alan White, Mr. Bozzio, Mr. Wackerman, and a whole host of others) would be embarrassed to be associated with your comment ...

@funkfanNo1 Manu has more soul and feeling then Weckl and Vinny both put together. His idea's just flow.. He has a style all his own and doesn't sound like any other drummer. That alone allows him to stand above the others. Add to that he can play it all from funk to jazz and rock and still shine. He's not just a drummer but a truly gifted musician. The drummers you've mentioned are all great of course but Manu Katche has a spirit I don't hear in the others. He touches the soul.
@CHC4669 I may agree with you on the Weckl thing. But Vinnie is a monter...a monster with soul. I'd say from that time frame...Manu and Vinnie stood above the rest.
@plecain I like Vinnie and I respect his chops but there are so many drummers more feel then Vinnie. As good as he was with Sting the band sounded so much better with Omar Hakim who is so much more expressive. I mean Vinnie has his licks but Omar is so much more creative and expressive within the music. With Weckl and Vinnie it's as if you know what their gonna do before they do it. The slick licks are fine but that's not what inspires me to play drums. It's how one interprets the music.
@CHC4669 We'lljust have to disagree on Vinnie, then. And thats not to say I don't agree with your other thoughts. I loved Omar with Sting and he brought his own feel to that band. But a totally different sound to Sting at the time with Branford, Kenny Kirkland, and Daryl Jones. You can't really compare. I also agree on Weckl...great chops and monster technician...not a lot of feeling for me. I'd rather listen to Kenny Aronoff who showed litlle in the way of chops but great feel and time.
Awesome video!! Did you ever wonder who the woman is in this video? She has a fabulous voice and is the perfect choice for this song. Her name is Paula Cole.
I'm not sure what all of the animosity is, or why this is so tough for people. Manu is an amazing musician, as is Mr. Gabriel. However, the audio track is clearly from some other concert than the video track. I personally don't give a rat's ass about live video unless I can see what a musician is actually doing in the audio track.
@superjmutt too less sex, too less R&R, but too much drugs.Make a CTRL+ALT+DEL for your brain and restart your life again, but not as musician,it´s not your job.
Damn Tony Levin played with my SVT-4 at the Quebec city Summer fest some years ago.. But the only bad think is... He didn't sign my head !! I will call him Groovy Tony! hehe
Hard to believe this was 17 tears ago! I had 2nd row seats and the show was amazing! No video can recreate the magic at a PG concert, if he tours in your town go see him, no matter the cost. And for those who think they are not really playing, well they never went to a PG show before. That is just professional video editing, used for the packaged DVD videos. Watch some of the audience uploaded camcorder footage of these shows on YouTube, and you'll see how it really was at the shows.
@superjmutt - you are wrong. This is not pre-recorded. I've seen Tony Levin more than any other musician. With Yes (ABWH), King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, HoBoLeMa, etc etc. He could do this gig and this sound in his sleep. You will continue to believe whatever it is you think you're seeing here, but don't bring it here, or any where else where there are intelligent people. You're embarrassing yourself.
If any of you think that this is the same audio as this particular video....well, let's just say that it must be pleasant to have the level of perceptive capabilities as yours that it doesn't interfere with your enjoyment as it does for me.
If any of you think that this is the same audio as this particular video....well, let's just say that it must be pleasant to have the level of perceptive capabilities as yours that it doesn't interfere with your enjoyment as it does for me.
@superjmutt I am sorry my friend but you are obviously wrong. Everyone uses prerecorded stuff, but the drum is still live as well as all the other instruments and vocals on this concert. What kind of musician are you if you think that Manu Katche is faking here??? He is not faking at all!!! This is one of the best concerts of all time and shame on you if you can only talk like this. You are unaccaptable not this show!!! Peace
Paula Cole is looking yummy in that black dress- sorry to be a pig, but she is. Audio is out of sync on the original video as well. Have had it since 1994.
many live dvds/recordings use the best snips from various tapes concerts. it's nothing secretive, just trying to get the best and most appropriate parts to kind of sum up the tour or just to get what they want out there. apart from that, peter has been using many backing tracks since the early days. don't get bent out of shape about it. it's still manu and it's still peter and tony and it's still a great performance.
Um, still complete bullshit. If you think that's acceptable fine. It's not for me. I am a musician and I watch video to actually see how musicians play certain licks and riffs--not just to jack it. I think it's totally unacceptable. And lame. I'm not bent out of shape--just that it sucks. The UP concert was similarly lame as most of it was pre-recorded. I think that's unacceptable as well. Lame.
@superjmutt Are you really suggesting here that you are a better musician and live performer than Peter Gabriel`s band? Wow! What is your name? Who are you? Show me how great musician you are! I am not gonna start arguing with you because it would be truly pointless. You are a jerk!
@superjmutt I understand the confusion here, however you are 100% incorrect in your assumption that the music was pre-recorded or tracked. The video footage was taped over a series of nights in the same venue. During the editing and post-production for the video, a master audio track of one performance was selected as the "best" in terms of sound and performance and the video clips were done likewise. The end result is a video composition which in many places fits and in a few does not.
@russdonruss You'll find this is typical in many "live" videos. Especially when they are trying to accomplish a major video production with numerous camera angles and super-high quality. I am a drummer myself and love Manu Katche--I believe he is the best drummer Peter Gabriel ever had. I too noticed that the video and his playing were not synced. Chalk it up to post-production editing. Manu was still playing --phenomenally, I might add-- and the vid editing doesn't take away from that.
I was lucky enough to see this tour, pressed right up against the stage - if they were faking it, then more power to them; it would have been easier to just perform than it would have been to cheat that convincingly.
This video is complete bullshit--it isn't recorded at the same concert as the audio track. Just watch Manu and you'll see that he's not playing exactly what is on the audio track. What gives?
I didn't see that? What I DID see was a lack of sync between sound and picture that you find far too often on youtube. What I mean here is that every sound to me seems to have its corresponding movement, but out of time. Live concerts will usually have an element of improvisation that is large enough to ruin the idea of combining two concerts. The developing songs would simply part too much. Peter Gabriel would never allow that to happen. He is just way too quality conscious.
There is a programmed track in addition to his live drumming. This is a live performance. His live drumming only comes in after a minute or so. Then he drops out for about 30 seconds before coming back in.
Amen. Nothing easier than sitting in his momma's basement and spitting on people's efforts to help others and do something significant - AND make this fantastic music at the same time.
I caught this show at the Tacome Dome on July 8'th 1993 - a day after my 27'th birthday. WHAT A SHOW. I had/have seen many, many great concerts in my life, but this one was special.
I don't know if its true but I think this Secret World registration is the best musical thing ever, The band, the nr 1 musicians of the world, this gig, the songs, the visuals. Not even Peter himself could come close to this later on in his career. I know.. there is so much good stuff out there, but this is even a bit better. Wow.
I wish I could of seen this tour. One of my favorite songs solo. For those old Genesis fans like myself the vocal thing at the end of this song reminds me of a few songs he did that vibrato thing on. I this it was on The Lamb? I am sure someone knows what I am talking about. What a rhythm section.
I'm pretty sure this is off the secret world live concert, one of the best concerts ive ever seen footage off. Totally perfect performances from everyone involved.
