  • OK. Just, some clarification for those who don't know much about Russian Literature:Both "Dead Souls" and "Revisor" are two famous works by the great Russian writer Nikolay Gogol, so no wonder that Schnitke included them in his Gogol suite.

  • Uncle Scrooge of conductors!!!

  • So good. Gogol is heard clearly in the concert; and the whole idea is so clearly expressed. Thanks a lot!!!

  • Admirable maestro Rozhdestvensky...

  • Would anyone know if there is a recording available of Rojdestvenski's arrangement? I must say that this sounds much more interesting than the one more frequently recorded!

  • @RobertSchilman Is there a recording already? I think the only one is contained in the DVD Notes Interdits.

  • @anaklasis Actually there is a plenty of recordings of this piece and it is arranged in plenty of ways. Apparantly the other arrangement for orchestra - to which I referred in my first comment - is also by Rojdestvenski, but judging from the cd - found on BIS - it differs from this quite a much. It may be that the other arrangement is closer to Schnittke's original incidental music for the play and this one heard in the video is later. I shall check the DVD you mentioned, thank you.

  • @RobertSchilman No, BIS recorded only the Gogol Suite, originally known as The Revisor's List and written as an incidental music for two pianos in 1978. Then Rozhdestvenski arranged the set for orchestra. This is an entirely different work, Dead Souls is the soundtrack of a Russian TV film with the same name and it was already written for orchestra if I'm not wrong in 1984. In fact, you can find that film in Youtube.

  • @anaklasis Well, that does explain a great deal of things. Ironically I came to believe that these two works were the one and the same only after I had done some so called reserarch on the internet. And Schnittke's habit of using the same themes on a number of different works didn't help either - quite confidently I can say that surely a theme or two of these can be heard on the Gogol suite!
