If you do want to fork over the $60 for a maybe repair its best to ebay a search for ps3 controller board diskdrive. Oh and "KES/KEM" is the model of your system drive tray. replaceing the tray will not work OFTEN in solving the issue. I am working on my clients ps3 and order a replacement tray hoping this will solve the issue and it hasn't yet.
The issue has to do with the disk drive controller board. Like all of sony system they all have had the same issue. Its ironic cause it happens on the ps1, ps2/slim and yes ps3/slim.. the main driver chip that tells the system to spin the spindle is fried and worst still a DIY will set you back $60 for a new controller board or $45 for a new replacement driver chip. To make it more intresting theres only a few board that support either the KES400a or KEM400a >>NO SUPPORT FOR KES/M 410ACA

@nolzy007 your problem is that the spinner inside the disk reader is dead wont spin wont recognize any thing so you would have to fix the spinner or find another blu-ray reader for cheaper otherwise sending it in is the only way for survival for your playstation 3 :(

Your problem *was* your laser. It had gone bad. You could have gotten a replacement for approx. $50. If anybody else has PS3 problems, post your problem under the FORUMS at BRAVOGAMES.WEBS.COM. I will get to work as soon as possible once your problem is posted.

I know my comment is loooong after this issue has already been resolved, but I just wanted to add that I had this exact issue with one of my PS3s and it did end up being the laser only. As other comments indicate, the drive is controlled through the laser assembly...the decks do sometimes go bad...but in my experience the laser is usually the culprit with most disc read (spin) issues.

I have the same problem. I went on Ebay and bought a new disk drive and now it wont read the games(99.9% score) It had been 6months since this and I decided to finally buy a new one(skinny ones) and forget about this problem.
this all occured when I had to open my disk drive since my 2yr old insert a dish card and some nickles and dimes and disc werent being able to go in. I had to open and removed the items and since then it never worked.
the guy above is correct! the drive is controlled through the lense assembly, if your lense dont light up,your drive will not spin! if you look where your lense asem. toucthes your drive carefully, you will notice a small switch,with the blu ray assem. touching it, the drive is turned off. the lazor lense reads from the inside edge of the disk first then out to the outer edge and back again,with no lazor working, it can not send a signal to spin the disk. best to buy head package deal. My blu ray died also after 3.01 update, my friend told me the modernwarfare2 servers are empty, i suspect a massive blu ray disk failure, this sounds like a scheme, we should all sue sony, this is a real scandal.
This same thing happened 2 me and i did both "clean the blu ray laser" and got a new blue ray dive but it still doesnt work.....This happened 2 me when i turned off the ps3 and ejected the disc at the same time and the disc stopped halfway when the PS3 was off, so i turned on my PS3, took the disc in and never worked since then...
There's this little tiny motor you have to replace inside of there. Just keep taking it apart until you find the piece that the disk sits on. At the same time you find the laser assembly in there.
The motor is a small black round piece mounted on a small chip. It has a small strip running to it for power to spin it. You have to unplug that. Four screws remove it. Buy a new one that works (just the motor, or a piece that includes a motor) and switch them.
i googled the kem and honestly dude it would prob be cheaper to buy the whole blue ray drive bc its only like $10 more and that way u get all of it...just to be on the safe side thats what im gonna do, there is a guy on one of these videos who sells them from california
@wedeman06 you cannot buy a new "drive".The drive is paired to your motherboard so unless you take the motherboard that the drive came from it will not work!If you want to fix it, go to ebay or google and search for your model number and figure out what laser it is. It is one of 2 things or both. it is your lense has burnt out or the deck is bad. Safer to just go ahead and buy the lense/deck combo and if you look hard enough you can find them for $50-$60 and there are videos all over youtube

I was playing MW2, just finished a FFA match, then it just froze.

get a new lens, ur spindle doesnt spin because the lens is dead and the spindle recognizes. my ps3' laser also died after the 3.01 update.

my advice is just wait to get one of the new ps3 slims
-i updated to 3.00 and it fucked my ps3 up

I know how to fix it.....

It is more likely to be the chip that operates the motor. It's underneath the whole drive.
