It's too bad that these super strippers are no longer made. Iguess if they were built today the cost of raw materials would be more than what it was to manufacture.
I grew up not 25 miles from the Spade. She weighed somewhere close to 15 million pounds. Multiply that by the price of steel currently, and that is why Consol cut her up. She would bring in close to a million dollars for scrap alone. The mine was finished, and the spades turntable rollers broke. Bucyrus hasn't built another 'super stripper' in decades, so no spare parts. Too old and too far gone. I'm sad to see her go, but money talks. Goodnight, old girl.
It sucks they had to take it down or blow it down but it was to big to go anywhere and they could have kept it in the mine but they probly would have let it rust till it fell apart it self
I dont understand why they would get rid of it. It must of payed for if self a 100 times over. Even if it was horribly broken, to fix it would pay more then to buy anuther probily by a few million ( i would think becuase of the huge size price wise). And even it the mine closed they could send it to anuther part of the country, I know they can reasemble them. Did they take up to much power or werent green enoff? Just sad to see it go.
The men that operate and work on these large machines grow to love and respect them > It's a very sad day to these men when their large machine is destroyed.

thats a load of crap draglineoperator.... your group dident have the funs to pull this off and you know it. your guys cant even afford to restore any of the junk you have now rusting away.
such a shame to see one of the giants becoming scrap. i have seen this shovel on tv a couple of times and loved it. now its gone....still its all 'progress' i suppose
One of the saddest days I've ever seen. THE END OF AN ERA is right. I grew up watching a Marion 5761 sitting in a field, and it just disapeared one day as I recall (I was 5 or 6) and later on I watched Freeman United's 1050B and Bucket wheel work, and now I hear that they are both gone too...
How sad to see it go. I was a welder on the Spade back in the mid seventies. I remember when we replaced the boom support cables that they blew up. It was an amazing machine.
the plan was to pay 2.5 mil. the the land around her was ours. we had to do the reclamtion work around her. but they didnt go through with there side of the deal and said no.
Sad this happens to these AWESOME machines. Where I live, AMAX had a BE 3270 dragline & up the road PEABODY had a Marion 5900 shovel with the same results. Most people don't even know these things exist, let alone watch them work, a sight to behold!!! I've taken pic's and thanks to videos like this, my kids will know these machines walked the earth.
F**cking greedy owners, the Harrison mining museum had collected 2.6 million and wanted to buy the silver spade and preserve it but they said it was not enough and scrappped it instead, the very same thing happened to the big Big Muskie .
Un video no recomendable para los amantes de esas fantasticas maquinas.Una lastima que no la dejasen como museo,ya que era un modelo historico.Vaya hi..de pu..,sus dueños.Duele ver como la vuelan.
