  • ah my hands are to small!

  • too much of this will take you away from the music

  • @thelovacluka ....?

  • ...and the first finger another half step... xD

  • ur not good man!! not at all!!! cuz ur mind blowing awesome!!!! ur my idol!!!!!

    thanks u sir!!!

  • goddamn how does he stretch his 2 middle fingers so far apart?

  • @DrFizz28 i thought i was the only one having a problem with that

  • @kungfudragon99 Guitar and hand heavily tilted

  • I want that guitar

  • de que año es este video? what year is this video? gracias y saludos

  • @Mattubic090 1996

  • ive pretty much done this exerise ...but struggling to play tech death stuff frm necrophagist n d likes ... thats kind of string skipping inside picking i believe .... hw shd i do dat ???

  • oh I love that guitar and the sound!!!!

  • can anyone do this? its impossible to do on a fat les paul

  • @bumsex4me It would be harder on the guitar in this video or strats.. LP have a 24 3/4 scale neck and strats or ibanez and so on mostly have 25 1/2 it's only 3/4 of an inch but its somewhat noticeable.

  • RIGHT HAND exercises

  • Even on these videos his tone is PERFECT.

  • ** And now that you know where to notes are, it's time to learn the actual arpeggio (8:38) Just like John explains, every two notes, you're jumping a string, so you start again at the low-E string note (5th fret) and jump to the D-string note which is at 7th fret, then you go to the A-string 7th fret and jump to the G-string note at fret 6, then you go back to the D-string note at 7th fret and again jump to the B-string note at 5th fret, then finally G-string 6th fret and high-E 5th fret. :)

  • ** Those of you who are interested to learning that Example 4 (07:48) the frets are as follows: 1st note on low E-string is on 5th fret, 2nd note on A-string is on 7th fret, 3rd note is on D-string at 7 fret, 4th note on G-string is at 6th fret, 5th note on B-string is at 5th fret, 6th and 7th notes at high E-string are at 5th and 9th frets -- (the 9th fret note is the "added third" John mentioned at the beginning.)

  • It would've been helpful if he would have included the tabs, but even so these are very good videos.

  • how can he be teaching us dis when he doesnt even tell wut fret

  • @chay100372 Because Rock Discipline comes with a book with all the music. Whoever posted this did it from the DVD, it was originally on VHS.

  • how can he be teaching beginners this when hes note specific on what fret?

  • :o.. it was alright with the first vid. .. and well the first part of this... mm well i can practice sometime but when i continue watching... o_O.. nooo way! my hand will break in 2 xD

  • der hanon der gitarre..

  • Dang he shoulda kept the ibanez endorsement, that's a nice guitar.

  • Yeah those last ones put my finger dexterity in perspective, thanks John!

  • Thumbs up if you can do the last stretch.

So that we can know how many guitarists with alien fingers are out there who can do it.

    p.s. I can't do it

  • @EntanglementSatan i'm not surprised you don't get thumbs up... ;D

  • @ferdk16

    lol yeah!

  • @EntanglementSatan I can, but I haven't practiced these enough to be able to switch quickly.

  • @EntanglementSatan I can do it, after some warming up. It's pretty hard though, especially because the guitar I use has a 26.5" scale. : )

  • @EntanglementSatan i can do it but then i was created in hte lab of mr. yngwie malmsteen himself...

  • @deathtar94 Now that definitely explains your skills!

  • Those are some ridiculous stretches.....

  • What guitar is he using?

  • @sk8x4lf Ibanez custom. He doesnt use them anymore.

  • nice post..i like it

  • Remember, don't hurt yourself...

  • Yeah!! I'm 10 Minutes better already..

  • "If you can't do this, you're shit! You could start with about 10, but you can't probably do anymore!"

  • Those finger exercises may be intended to loosen up one's fingers, but those arpeggios could sound great in an actual song. They sound quite eerie and reminiscent of something David Gilmour would play in his Pink Floyd days.

  • @6672rock Yeah, it kinda made me think of Isis. He said they all sounded really ugly, but I kept thinking "These chords actually sound kinda cool. Creepy. But cool."

  • and in this 10 minute video are the excercices that made me a better guitarrist

  • The thing that holds me back on playing guitar is my short chubby fingers I have. Any one been playing the guitar for some years that has the same situation as I have???

    Plays Drums.

  • @SuperTamaboy That's an excuse lol. Michael Angelo Batio, Jimmy Bruno, and plenty of other guitarists have short chubby fingers and can still play complicated stuff.

  • @SuperTamaboy See Michael Romeo...

  • what a horrible guitar.

  • @Zordid0 wrong, that guitar is fucking amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • 6:21 5th fret all the way to the 11th fret, (the ultimate stretch), excuse me while I go sell my guitar on Ebay.

  • @Phoenix87x Shawn lane does it at 5th fret to 12th fret

  • @TheHornet79 holdsworth does 1st to 12th lol

  • ahh why am i watching this video im not done with the first warm up lol

  • I heard somewhere that Matt Heafy from Trivium used to practice to this DVD every day

  • @Spermwhales93 Yes, I have heard from him on multiple interviews that he used it everyday when he was learning and still uses it to warm up now days.

  • @SuperFritch42

thank god, i already started to think itwas too hard for me lol (playing flawlessly)

  • @Spermwhales93 trivium is gay

  • @Jx0xNxNxY Before you argue with me, get your grammar right. It's Trivium ARE gay, not Trivium is gay. Secondly, calling someone gay because they're crap (which Trivium are not) is homophobia. I listen to a wide variety of music, there's only two types of music really: good and bad.

  • Intervalically. \m/

  • This dvd rocks and you can learn very much of it

  • hey... does somebody know why he's using a musicman instead an ibanez? why did he change?

  • @jmdb1994 Ibanez couldn't provide the guitars he wanted, he was never fully satisfied with the Ibanez so he switched companies.

  • @Spermwhales93 but they were custom made by Mr. Ibanez. the strings can exceed temperatures of the sun. The pickups are hand wired into the ancient chineese oak by tony blair. the guitars are hand painted by Michael Angelo (not that guitar noob, but the guy who painted jesus on that cieling)

  • @pimpmyride711 lol! They are awesome guitars, but not awesome and godly enough for Petrucci! They're probably quite desirable now.

  • OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW TOO MUCH STRETCHING FOR MY POOR DEFENSELESS HAND!

  • "Until I can´t strech anymore" That means never u.u Not even with a 7 string guitar :P

  • i can't believe Jesus is teaching me music.

  • @petrocknamedsharzy There is a slight resembleance, isn't there?

  • I hate this exercise. Bloody Petrucci...I have to warm up...to do his warm ups.

  • He looks like a dead jedi.

  • It looks easy but is hard to execute. Yes, it does hurt.

  • I wouldn't say fingers are too short, but they definitely can't stretch that far yet. it *Seems* like my fingers are the same length as his.

  • @guitarwizard17 500 BILLION NPS!!!!!

  • ouch.

  • Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • He seem like a really really nice guy

  • 4:40

    Fucking shit it hurts!

  • @guitarwizard17 god forbid, we don't want people dying from that

  • where can i buy that guitar!!!!???

  • damn, even his warm-ups are intense!

  • 1. steve howe

    2. petrucci

    3. shawn lane

    4. buckethead

    5. malmasteen

  • @connord12 LOL MALMASTEEN :)

  • @LazerRazor7 haha oops :)

  • @connord12

how bout Buckethead & That One Guy!!!

  • That last stretch is pretty gnarly.

  • this is amazing for your hands and stuff but i have like an hour max to play everyday...i'm not gonna spend 45 minutes of that hour warming up...it's just not happening lol

  • I'm glad John took the time to learn this crap himself because I love Dream Theater's music, but GOD DAMN is this boring.

  • Holy crap I cant do the last stretching because my hands are god damn small.

  • whats the song at 6:50?

  • I havent read all of this argument but i havent see a mention of jason becker? I know hes disabled now but his skill and ability to adapt to other music is amazing. Then buckethead? hes well up their among gilbert and yngwie. I personally think vai is recognized because of his creativity and weird sounds, very much like frank zappa. Im not saying hes not skilled because he is, but hes very different in style to say satriani and vai. Its a never ending argument

  • These guitarists are common favourite guitarists for a reason. Whether you like it or not people love these guitarists more than all the overlooked guitarists people put down because they amaze people everywhere they go and probably do a lot more to make themselfs noticed :)

  • @MattyyWW Yeah, and the reason is simple: Everyone has different opinions.

Some people think Petrucci is best, others think Joe Stump is best etc.

  • Exactly, but most people ignore this and think theere own opinion means more than everyone else. Instead of arguing about it, everyone should embrace all music they can, respect it and try find good in it. Fair enough if you cant stand most mainstream popular music but when it comes to guitarists like this. They all deserve your time and dont deserve to be criticized and pitted against other guitarists that will create and arguement that really isnt needed and probably wont be won.

  • @MattyyWW You're goddamn straight !

  • Your argument is'nt never ending. It's pointless. Just so you know.

  • Just so you know. Your comment is void

  • i really don't like steve vai, don't mean to be an asshole or anything, i have only heard a few of his songs, but he uses the whammy bar WAY too much for my liking, but it's just my opinion

  • He do use it much, but try to listen to "Touching tongues" "Boston Rain Melody" or all the songs from The 7th song....

  • @SYNcustomWILLbeMINE i dont like him either steve vai should be more humble. he has attitude -. - my friend was like "can i take picture of u" and hes like take it if u can and he just walked away. he should have atleast stop for couple of sec. faggot-_-/

  • Top 5 Guitarists

    1. John Petrucci

    2. Joe Satriani

    3. Steve Vai

    4. Paul Gilbert

    5. Michael Romeo

  • @MONSTERDT2112 where's steve lukather ??

  • Your my new friend because you mentioned Michael Romeo. He is so overlooked.

  • lol yea he's amazing, the arpeggios he does on the damnation game are ridiculous.

  • @MONSTERDT2112

What about Greg Howe, George Bellas, Richie Kotzen, Reb Beach, Andy Timmons, Steve Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Tony Mcalpine and so many others? Your top 5 guitarist are very typical, there are a lot of amazing guitarist you left out.

Anyway, I like all the guitarists you mentioned, but I think Vai is the god of the electric guitar, he's the most comprehensive guitarist i've ever seen.

  • i like most of the guitar players you mentioned, but i can't include everyone. I really like Steve Vai but i think Joe Satriani is better overall, and John Petrucci, in my opinion, is the greatest guitar player of all time, he takes some of the fastest most technical playing and fuses it with some of the most soulful and emotional playing i've ever heard. The fact that he can mix both of those together and use them at the same time is mindblowing to me.

  • Comment removed

  • @MONSTERDT2112 that's more like top 5 fastest guitarists, it doesn't take as much talent to play that than it does to play like Brad Paisley or Eric Johnson.

  • both petrucci and satriana play emotional solos as well as blues, jazz, and classical. same with paul gilbert. romero is a shredder but he is one of the best at it. and vie is a bit of everything. so next time you try to say something about one of my comments get your facts straight.

  • @MONSTERDT2112 Romero? Vie? These are not common spelling errors. You know nothing.

  • i might of made spelling errors, but all that counts is they're music, and yes i suck at spelling, that has nothing to do with my knowledge of music.

  • @xPurpleDrinkx9001 He didn't spell them like that lol.

  • petrucci yes the rest of them no way to overated

  • i totally disagree

  • Satriani does this in another vid. Did they go to the same school of music lol?

  • @AirHendrix91 yeah they both went to berkley i think

  • 0:51 i hate the world !

  • this gets easier if you know mr. brightside by the killers

  • @just4guitarz

it's also easier if you can fit 20 dicks in your mouth like you.

  • ok im a pretty good guitarist(sweeping, speed) not the best but pretty good for 3 years... i just noticed i cant stretch my middle finger and ring finger apart that well.. how can i stretch them? to o apart more

  • just practice songs that use alot of stretching for eg. try playing message in a bottle by the police ...may not be my favourite song but it helped to stretch my fingers.

  • nice man thanks for the tip!

  • @maidenicarus06 no problem, good luck!

  • or idk if this is good info but i do it and got a little better at it(i only been playing 4 a year) and i found it easier to just tilt your guitar and your hand with it.. your fingers should look downward and when you play like that and it gets confortable start tilting the guitar back down and your fingers should adjust to it... hope this helps you cause it helped me...

  • Thanks man ill definitely try that! Hopefully it will work for me.

  • @maidenicarus06

    how bout practice?:P

  • good call mate :D

  • someone noticed that petrucci likes to say "basically" a lot?

  • these exercises are easy if you are an intermediate classical guitarist ;)

  • try the one in 6:23, the ultimate stretch...it's pretty hard

  • @baelsharon or, if you are a fucking virtuoso like me xD

  • also "first of all" :)))

  • have you try these exercices?? they are very painful :S unless he warns: don't hurt yourselves lol

  • They're not painfull at all, and they shouldnt be, for a begginer this will be difficult but most people should be able to do this, just keep it slow and make sure to properly warm up before hand.

  • That guitar is both cool and ugly at the same time

  • @elreffe ohhh dont say that... that guitar is awesome xD

  • @elreffe In Sweden we call that "ful-snygg". Best, Sandemose

  • @elreffe In Sweden we say "ful-snygg". Best, Sandemose

  • @elreffe WHAT! i love that guitar I want to find one. track it down on ebay or something

  • this is dream teather´s guitarrist?

  • Yes.

  • omg yes!

  • @getthefuckaoutmyway No, he's obviously their drummer.

  • @ctawesome

yeah you´re right mangini is the new king of drums and portnoy fuck himself still with lame stuff like adrenaline mob

  • Petrucci reminds me of my Guitar Teacher. And I mean in every way. But he plays as the Lead Guitarest in my Church.

  • His guitar reminds me of late 80, early 90s, New York-Jamaican graffiti and basketball. It also reminds me of Ghost Writer, Sesame Street, and The Mighty Ducks II. Fucking weird.

  • That comment is amazing.

  • You know it.

  • john petrucci = jesus christ

  • No. John Petrucci = God !

  • No John Petrucci does exist !

  • What would be a greater blasphemy: to say that god doesn't exist, or to say that he sucks Petrucci's dick?

  • now do it on bass!

  • the ultimate stretch , more the ultimate wtf imposible only john does it like scratching his nose

  • Comment removed

  • look buddy just appreciate talent John Petrucci and Shawn Lane are both highly talented I miss him a lot may his soul rest in peace but please respect good musicians they both are different but great.

  • Comment removed

  • Ok agreed on that :)

  • he's not trying to show off or do something crazy, it's a freakin exercise dude

  • I cant strech between my middle and ring finger. =( any tips?

  • do this exercise lots of times

  • as john said you can stretch them , do it individualy with your other hand , not to hard , and try making the opening between your fingers bigger with your other hand , but not to hard , just were it starts to feel the stretching , it should help

  • keep trying and eventurally you finger gaps stretch. but this does take tim and is really the only way you can do it

  • Yeah I've been practicing this daily as long as many other exercises since a few weeks back and I have noticed tht slowly I can stretch those fingers more and more

  • PatRobls search in internet for a torrent donwload u dont need a torrent program theres an ebook called killer pentatonics from dave celentano it has lots of excersices with streches and pull offs and hammer ons so it gives u a good stretching and strong fingers practice them slowly and eventually u will get more speed and strong fingers and right hand too

  • practice!!!! thats alls it is, be patient and persist with it, it'll come eventullay! you think john lernt this straight away, it took years of practise :):)
