  • I saw DF in knoxville tn. in 1982 in the winter his band had got snowed in in CO. I was him a grand piano and 6 guitars in a half moon he played for 3 and 1/2 hours that nite and it was amazing. 14000 at stokely in knoxville. Drank a qt. of jack and a gallon of water. He told us he was going to play the songs the way he had wrote them. AMAZING show. Got to see him 3 more times. I love his music.

  • Dan Fogelberg is one of those artists that touched the hearts of so many young and old. An Illinois boy that grew up "unaffected" by the East and West myth. Dancing Shoes was my favorite. I still think of Kelly L. Netherlands and Dan Fogelberg will always live in our hearts and time.

  • Thanx- DF 1982 live how did you tape this ? Fantastic

  • I love this song, though it takes me back to a very difficult time in the my life (the death of a girl I was close to). Still, it's one of the best of Dan's best. Definitely the best song on "Captured Angel." I saw him perform this twice, the only disappointment being that he didn't have a band with him. It was still great seeing him sing it live.

  • Thank you!!! Beautiful man! I love Dan Fogelberg

  • Thank you, one of my most favorite song of my favorite musician-Artist in my lifetime from me- age 17- Dan-age 24- I so so miss him, I will be 52 on 8/16-three days after what would have been his 59th Birthday, I can't express it enough in words...

  • Just an incredible piece of music -

@jflinn210, you are SO correct - to be able to compose a phrase such as this is true genius.

  • I saw Dan at Bowling Green University in the late 70's I think. It was such an incredible concert. He was alone on stage in the middle of the audience and the college crowd went wild with appreciation for his amazing music. Suddenly, he broke a guitar string on his acoustic and he seemed in shock, not knowing what to do. Said "This has never happened before" Someone handed him an electric guitar and started jamming on it something tribal and the whole crowd just stood up and cheered for him

  • Thanks for helping me have the desire to learn how to play the guitar.

  • "I left a trail of footprints deep in the snow, I swore one day I would retrace them. But when I turned around I found that the wind had erased them, now I'll never replace them."

Oh my GOD! One of modern music's BEST stanzas! Who CAN"T RELATE to that??? Awesome, Dan.

I wish I'd been able to tell you, to your face, how much a part of my teens and early adult life you and your music were. You defined me.

Thank you, Dan, for everything. Thank you.

  • @jflinn210 I have to say - I think the best line in the whole song is "I hear you've taken on a husband and child and live somewhere in Pennsylvania" - just brilliant - I can see the similarity between that and the architect's wife in Same Auld Lang Sign...neither got married for love - one married to be kept warm safe, and dry, the other "took on" a husband and a child - like it's some sort of burden but convenient or expected...Dan's best song bar none...well up every time I hear it

  • @mlusby: That's one thing I like about Dan's "lost love" songs: They aren't about "broken hearts" or "pity," they are about people who loved, broke, and then got on with their lives (as in "Old Tennessee," "Auld Lang Syne," Last Nail," etc.) Sure, he had his "Missing You" moments ... but those are "right now" love hurts type themes. Dan handles the "loved from long ago" better than any artist I have ever heard.

  • @jflinn210 completely agree! Is everyone here aware that there is a petition to get Dan inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame!? I think it is due to be submitted this year - (more on Dab's official website if you are interested). i''ve only just found out and signed - but it could definitely do with a few more signatures!!! Pass the message on!!

  • Saw Dan at the Sundome in Sun City AZ in the early 80's doing an acoustic concert for Bruce Babbit's gubernatorial re-election. Best show I ever saw! Sounded like he had 7 guitars going at once! Amazing! Maybe someone could post a clear stereo studio version of this song on You Tube. Thanks.

  • During the early to mid 80's DF was @ AZ St Univ on an acoustic tour...ONE Grand Piano, 6-7 guitars and Dan Fogelberg on stage....magnficant!

  • I started listening to popular/rock music in 1961. Now, 47 years later, I can say with certainty that "The Last Nail" is one of my top five all-time favorites. (But I've never been able to narrow the top five down to a #1.)

  • Thanks again, Tim. Another wonderful performance by our Dan! Sheer God-given talent! I miss him!

  • Thank you for posting this. I just turned 28 and Dan's music has made life so much better. No matter where you are, his music makes it better ( at work, driving down the back roads, at a cook out, or just sitting around drinking some beer ) his music just gives me a natural high. Thank you Dan, R.I.P.

  • Couldn't agree more - I'll be 30 next month, and have liked Dan's music as long as I can remember. Phoenix was probably the first album I ever heard. Dan just had a knack for playing some of the best and most hartfelt music I've ever heard. I can play this song, but I can't make it sound like him, because only he could do that. I have his entire discography, and love them all. It's such a shame that he left us so soon.

RIP Dan. You are sorely missed.

  • One of my favorites from long ago & live video with it...thank you for sharing this gem.

  • Thanks, Tim!! Gotta luv Captured Angel! A little trivia on the Album. Chartered #23 on Billboard in 1975. Went Platinum in sales, no singles were produced. Pretty impressive!!

This is one of those albums,if you don't have in your collection,Get It!My favorite part is when Man in the Mirror is bridged together with Below the Surface.I just love it, when he rocked out!

Dan Fogelberg left his footprints on many hearts and souls.

Great video quality! Thanks for the sharing!

  • Another classic Dan performance of a classic Dan song.... thanks for posting!
