  • im very new to hewing and all so im glad you explain little things like why your notches are closer together the further down the log you go

  • The video is a demonstration of how "hand hewn" logs were prepared for building barns, since chainsaws wheren't invented until the early 1900's they had to use axes and such to make them.

this demonstration was done for the 2008 Ontario county Historical Barn tour. Since folks were coming and going all day long and not staying for the entire demo, Kevin was obliged to answer questions while doing his work.

  • Is there a reason this is done with an axe and not a chainsaw?

  • is that Ash?

  • Good lord you do poke along. Swing that thing.

  • yea. more work, less talk. even if you do have people talking to you.

  • Yes, I have to put a filter up at some times. People really like to hover about and pick my brain when I am working. I try to schedule the talk for later or just clam up. A guy has to, or the job won't progress.

  • hope I did not make you too mad, I can tell you know what you are doing. Hell the last 20 years or so, since I left the farm, the hardest thing I do is cut the grass. Don't know how fast I would go if I had to do real work. rock on dude.

  • No, that didn't happen. You misunderstood me. You are one of the good ones. I like to be through rocking, I really would. I don't get much roll, hardly enough to operate. I'm having a bad life, but guys like you who understand make me feel slightly better. Thank You.
