Yeah, Slim's "Poppity Pop" session for Bel-Tone Records! :)
I used to have an absolute choice mint copy of Bel-Tone 753: "Dizzy Boogie"/"Poppity Pop" by the 'Slim Gaillard Orchestra. Jack McVea on tenor was listed as "Jack Mack" and Dizzy was listed by is true first & middle names "John Birks" on the original label.
Gave it up for Bird's Septet doing "Night In Tunisia" on a Dial label 78.
As a Dizzy fan you should talk with my friend Osa. She has some great stories. One time she went to see Dizzy at a concert or club, went back stage with her boyfriend, introduced Dizzy, who promptly said, "What, you're going out with this guy?!" hahahaha
When I met Dizzy & had him sign his first 78rpm album set at the back of Gammage Auditorium where he'd just played with Billy Eckstine and the Count Basie Orchestra on October 29, 1989, when he saw me, the first words out of his mouth were, "Shit, boy - where'd a kid like you get all them records?!?!?!"
I had both arms full of no less than 43 of his 78's at the time. ;) Still got the program w/Duffy Jackson's autograph & the address he gave me for his dad, Chubby Jackson. :) :) :)
Yeah, he traded this to me because I was (and still am) a big Dizzy Gillespie fan - didn't find out about the first Bird & Diz pairing until recently.
Have you checked out the rest of my new uploads? I've got Lunceford's "Margie", "Charmaine" & "Blues In The Night parts I & II" up among a BUNCH of other Lunceford/Trummy sides. :)
Bird and Diz also on early Slim Gaillard. The routine about cutting down a tenor reed for an alto.

Now that is a cool tidbit about Bird and Diz.... Also, it is neat that Trummy's singing sounds so much like Slim Gaillard.

You bet, Don. :)
I love Trummy's vocals as well, but when a trading buddy handed this one over 21 years ago, I coudn't believe who I was seeing in the band personnel!
Come to find out later, this session is actually the FIRST to pair Bird & Diz on record!!!!!
