@chriskoob, right on!! Obscured by Clouds is ideal after a hefty scalp of red wine. Animals is a classic piece too. I liked Barrett but he was there for TPATGOD only. Late 60's PF in brilliant!
The Wall is a psychoanalytical field trip into the subconscious of young male adults; the depth of fear and loathing of women here is a Feudian's wet dream!
People always get pissed at Roger for the way he traetd Rick in the end of the 70s but people forget RICK was also doing ALOT of COke at that time and wasnt pleasnt to be around either.....Im sorry give me floyd with roger or roger solo anyday over momentary and divison bell.. i mean those are great albums but they arent the same

tjrtherocksponge - yeah right I forgot - Rick did so between 8pm and 1pm - while getting stoned.
If you think otherwise you're talking complete bullshit - Vernon Fitch is indeed talking bullshit - David Gilmour by his own admission stated Rick 'wasn't pulling his weight'.
We'd all like to get nostalgic about Rick but the truth remains he contributed very little to the Wall recording whatsoever.
I don`t care what anybody says. I mean I love Pink Floyd as a band, in fact they are my favorite band in the whole world, and I love Gilmour too,... but without the genius of Roger Waters, the band would not have gotten to where they are now. THE WALL is a very complete work of art of our time. I can put Waters right up there with Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Verdi and all them geniuses. Who can waste the opportunity to see this act LIVE on the upcoming 2010-2011 world tour??
love this album and band, especially Gilmour (me being a guitarist and all) :)))) Can't wait to see Waters perform it in November at the Staples Center in LA. :D Just waiting for David to come out here now....

@gardenofarcane it's only natural. anybody with as many brilliant songwriting ideas as him would probably act the exact same way. glad he was because regardless of the personal relations, they all managed to make 5 brilliant albums.

@gardenofarcane just chill dude. you have to admit that they all made some of the best albums ever regardless of the hypocrite. if I were you i'd focus more on the actual albums then on the band members themselves.
Sorry dearies, but Rick hardly played anything of note on the album, not any of the main synth parts anyway. Sad but true, no matter how big you think Waters' ego was at the time.
the album wasn't all Waters. Some of the most memorable, best songs were written by Gimour. Such as: comfortably numb and run like hell. Particularly comf. numb. Without that song, this album wouldn't have been as great as it was.
Waters and Barret are two examples of people who aged in entirely different ways. Roger was borderline homely during their first few records but has grown into a very handsome and robust adult; whereas Syd was a physically striking presence as a youth and aged into a person resembling Uncle Fester. I guess mental illness wears a person down over the yrs both physically and mentally.
well, parts of the Final Cut are pieces originally concieved as part of The Wall. the thought of doin a 3 record set was bantied about. i think a 3 record set may have been too much to absorb at one time. plus, it was time for the band to part.
Also you forgot the full version of "Young Lust" which had the intro of the drum beat and guitar riff before the vocal comes in. The extended Run Like Hell should be on it. When the Tigers Broke Free is on The Final Cut reissue. The Earls Court shows are finally going to see DVD release according to a new Roger interview. @chriskoob Animals is my favorite record. Dark Side and Wish You Were Here are tied for second.. I cant even find as much as a live video from the In the Flesh Tour. All I have been able to find of the Animals era was Animals itself and audio of the live stuff.
I get the Roger bullying and his vision during the wall but it would be nice after all these years if they gave Waters more props for writing one helluva an album that made them all mega superstars and very rich as well. Gilmour and the others seem to have no problem playing the wall songs live or releasing greatest hits CD's either.... Wasn't all bad huh guys?
I have no problems giving Roger props for his songwriting ability, he is an amazing writer. He wrote some utterly amazing and beautiful songs.
That said, his attitude and the fact that his almost blind determination to turn the band into something out of his own image is what I CAN'T give him credit for, no matter how successful the material may have been. The Wall is too much Roger, not enough Pink Floyd for my tastes. There's three songs I like, but they are the ones David had a hand in.
And that is fine. But when you say there are "three songs you like" from Wall - you understand there would have been no Wall without Roger. The album would not exist. It is my opinion that the band was incredibly hollow when Roger left. "Learning To Fly fluff arena rock" with nice light shows if you ask me. To each his own though.
I am well aware that if he didn't write it, it wouldn't exist. I am saying that of all the material that ended up on The Wall, there's only three songs that have continued to stick with me. They just so happen to be the three songs that David had a hand in creating.
As for the later Floyd after Roger left, while I don't care for AMLOR that much, I love The Division Bell. They weren't necessarily trying to re-create the "classic" Floyd sound....just do something new and different.
Chriskoob, co-producer/engineer James Guthrie states that Wright played on majority of The Wall (except Nobody Home, The Trial, Mother, Empty Spaces, Bring the Boys Back Home, the organ on In the Flesh (both parts) and one or two others but Rick appears on most of the album)
to be fair just like dave still sings songs roger wrote, whenever roger does a solo show he needs at least 3 guitar players to recreate dave's work so its fair to say that both sides brought something the other lacked, dave with melody, roger with lyrics
actually Animals is my favourite Floyd album atm. 6 month ago it was dsotm though, and 1 year ago it was The Wall. So obviously Wish you were here or Piper will be my next favourite :P
I think Division Bell is the most underrated Floyd album. Many people wrote it off because there was no Roger, but it's actually a great album and much more "floydish" than the final cut was. Just my opinion.
scientifically proven???..........how do u scientifically prove musical taste? thats possibly the most ridiculous comment i've ever heard. thanks for the laugh mate.
they took all the pink floyd albums to a labratory, incincerated them and analyzed the radio carbon emmisions from each album, wish you were here had the most carbons per album. it was the "hottest" album they burned.
I stick with the Dark Side of the Moon because it was when they worked together. The Wall was more of a Roger solo album. But it is a matter of preference.
I disagree. David Gilmour has said on a number of occasions WYWH was their best album and I go along with him. It is their best album in terms of a complete piece of music and there are no rubbish bits/flaws throughout. Although The Wall is a fantastic album there are certain parts that I still find painful to listen to- i.e 'Vera' and 'Bring the Boys Back Home' Waters in full anti-war rambling mode here..................
i actually think the wall is better than dark side.. i mean the concept of the wall is absolutely amazing and there has never been another album that has that good of a concept
The Wall is brilliant, but in my opinion, nowhere near Dark Side. Dark Side took a concept that is so topical and far reaching, so many people can relate to it.
...it's very easy to become what you hate. he illuminates cycles of oppression in so many aspects of normal life, as well as the abnormal life of a rock star. i think both works succeed in putting the spotlight on issues of humanity, though The Wall gets more specific and hones in on one person's life, though it is more of a composite of many lives, rather than an autobiography of Roger or Syd. both deal with life, anti-life, trying to hold onto ones humanity, and finding answers.
I love the Wall and when asked which i like better, Dark Side or The Wall, I always say "hmm thats a tough one." But the concepts behind dark side are pretty damn good. The whole human experience thing and the way the album explores greed, insanity, money, death and war among other things is pretty incredible. And musically, you can listen to that album start to finish and it flows and connects the way no other album does or ever will.
in a nutshell, each member of floyd, even the junkie syd made the band what it is today, after syd got left behind, the four continued on and made it big, after that each one of them thought the band revolved around them, thats what split them apart. floyd was and always will be wright, gilmore, waters and mason
First: It's Gilmour, not Gilmore. Second: Syd was and is and always will be part of Pink Floyd. He may have only had a limited song contribution in the bands career, but he was still there. He's there in Dark Side, he's there in Shine On and he's there on the Wall. Syd's loss cast a great shadow of inspiration on the band for year's after his departure.
the wall wasnt the album that made pink floyd break up it was more along the lines of the final cut album, that waters wrote was to depressing for gilmore and the rest of the band. so they broke up
Wright got sacked by Roger before the Wall for developing a cocaine habit. His perspective is going to be influenced by that. I think Roger is probably right that the break-up of the band was pretty much inevitable once Dark Side made them financially set for life, and it's a tribute to all four of them that they kept making great music for as long afterwards as they did. They could have reached the Momentary Lapse Of Reason stage, where they coast along on their earlier success, much earlier.
You're right. I believe Gilmours vocals and guitar plays a significant part in The Wall. I believe Masons and Wrights contributions were quite minimal though, especially Wrights.
But Roger wrote like 90% of the music and were much more involved in creating the album, the stage show and the movie. His the mastermind behind this album and I consider The Wall to be 75% a Waters solo album and 25% a Pink Floyd album.
Despite the inner turbulence on there, PINK FLOYD produced a FANTASTIC album.David, Roger, Rick and Mason are really genius.Of course I don´t forget SYD BARRET.
At 5:30 he does, with his face deep in thought. I don't really see it (too much) anywhere else...well in some instances I guess. A cute, wise owl. So wise!
I happened to work at a theater house where HBO taped a birthday special for les paul. I was security there, and lo and behold David walks in and watches the show on the side before performing. After the show I went backstage since I was security and met everyone and took pictures. It was the best day I ever worked there. I have a photo of me between Gilmour and VanHalen. They were both great guys.
wow dave and roger have always captivated me. roger with his lyrics and smarts and dave with the soulful guitar always aiming to sooth your restless soul. pink floyd forever!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i smoked weed and listened to the wall on headphones for about 6 months straight....and it sent me crazier than the dude in the fuckin story..ive also heard a rumour that its the number 1 album left playing when they find suicides in their homes
Anyone know where and when was this documentary broadcasted and if it will be on again? Been waiting for this for 27 years! Always knew footage was filmed but PF never released it.

actually,
i keep thinking that had Roger been using CD technology back in 1979,
The Wall might have been longer.
i've always wanted to ask him what would have been different,
if anything,
had the constrictions of vinyl not been in the way.
argoninja2112 2 years ago

then again,
it didn't stop the Clash from releasing Sandinista! as a 3-disc set!
not that it's terribly memorable either....
oh well!
in the meantime,
i just hang on to the thought that if they gave Piper a 30th and a 40th anniversary treatment,
then The Wall is surely due for the big splash on the 30th birthday.
if there is a big rerelease,
i can only guess that some really great stuff will see the light of day.
Roger has said that the Earl's Court footage WILL be released. fantastic!

mahender6969 2 years ago
this November 30th is the thirtieth anniversary of The Wall's release.
my humble prediction is a reissue of the record,
all the "spare bricks",
like What Shall We Do Now? and the music box version of Mother,
maybe an extended version of Run Like Hell,
and When The Tigers Broke Free,
an audio commentary by Roger,
and the Earl's Court concert with the three part documentary which you can find on Youtube.
maybe.
now would be the time for the greatest selling double LP ever.
argoninja2112 2 years ago 19
They just need to re-release all their Albums on Vinyl in general, they are too hard to find. :(
DarkGamerO07 2 years ago 2
Also you forgot the full version of "Young Lust" which had the intro of the drum beat and guitar riff before the vocal comes in. The extended Run Like Hell should be on it. Plus is toying with touring The Wall with or without David Gilmour.

i didn't know that there was a different version of Young Lust or a long version of Run Like Hell!
great to know.

thanks for that.
i'll start looking for it....
as for the bit about Roger touring the Wall,
apparently his manager has suggested that it could be on for 2010-2011.
i wonder who will be in the Surrogate Band....

It is their best album in terms of a complete piece of music and there are no rubbish bits/flaws throughout. Although The Wall is a fantastic album there are certain parts that I still find painful to listen to- i.e 'Vera' and 'Bring the Boys Back Home' Waters in full anti-war rambling mode here..................

i actually think the wall is better than dark side.. i mean the concept of the wall is absolutely amazing and there has never been another album that has that good of a concept
guitarhero691 3 years ago 5
The Wall is brilliant, but in my opinion, nowhere near Dark Side. Dark Side took a concept that is so topical and far reaching, so many people can relate to it.
Resevil 3 years ago
although don't take exception to your taste in Dark Side over The Wall,
i think The Wall is quite universal and something that anyone who has been "burned" by others can relate to.
remember the moment in the limo in the film version of The Wall?
he tears all that gunk off of himself to reveal that he has morphed into an SS officer.
it's a hallucination,
but considering that previously we had seen his dad get bombed to death by a German Stuka dive bomber,
the message is clear, which is....

Its sad to say this but, RIP Richard William Wright
qwerty09121209 3 years ago 9
in a nutshell, each member of floyd, even the junkie syd made the band what it is today, after syd got left behind, the four continued on and made it big, after that each one of them thought the band revolved around them, thats what split them apart. floyd was and always will be wright, gilmore, waters and mason
sausageslaps 3 years ago 7
First: It's Gilmour, not Gilmore. Second: Syd was and is and always will be part of Pink Floyd. He may have only had a limited song contribution in the bands career, but he was still there. He's there in Dark Side, he's there in Shine On and he's there on the Wall. Syd's loss cast a great shadow of inspiration on the band for year's after his departure.
LTJP129 3 years ago 4
omg who fuking cares? i spelt gilMOURs name wrong. i said that already about syd, find some new material chump.

If creating The Wall made Pink Floyd break up, it was still worth it. It is one of the absolute best albums ever created (also the stage show).
Futiw 3 years ago 16
the wall wasnt the album that made pink floyd break up it was more along the lines of the final cut album, that waters wrote was to depressing for gilmore and the rest of the band. so they broke up
lexik10202 3 years ago
so when wright says that the wall was the album when the band broke up in this video.......youre saying you know better then him?
gbtimmon 3 years ago 2
Wright got sacked by Roger before the Wall for developing a cocaine habit. His perspective is going to be influenced by that. I think Roger is probably right that the break-up of the band was pretty much inevitable once Dark Side made them financially set for life, and it's a tribute to all four of them that they kept making great music for as long afterwards as they did. They could have reached the Momentary Lapse Of Reason stage, where they coast along on their earlier success, much earlier.

I wish I had headphones like Roger's. People would think I'm weird but common they look awesome.

"Pink Floyd is a one man band"... What a dumb fuck... As much as I adore Waters he could have never done such a masterpiece by himself
youlittlepieceofshit 3 years ago 8
But it is true that yielding to Waters' project killed the band, at least until Waters left.
mainsqueeze1977 3 years ago 2
You're right. I believe Gilmours vocals and guitar plays a significant part in The Wall. I believe Masons and Wrights contributions were quite minimal though, especially Wrights.
But Roger wrote like 90% of the music and were much more involved in creating the album, the stage show and the movie. His the mastermind behind this album and I consider The Wall to be 75% a Waters solo album and 25% a Pink Floyd album.
Futiw 3 years ago 4
Despite the inner turbulence on there, PINK FLOYD produced a FANTASTIC album.David, Roger, Rick and Mason are really genius.Of course I don´t forget SYD BARRET.

1:16 you mean? When Gerald Scarfe said "When Roger came..."

Ha, David sort of resembles an owl.

At 5:30 he does, with his face deep in thought. I don't really see it (too much) anywhere else...well in some instances I guess. A cute, wise owl. So wise!

I wish I was old enough to go to that show, but I did meet David Gilmour, and he was friendly. I was so freaked, it ruled!
Vincere 3 years ago 18
How did you meet him?
okrabay 3 years ago 7
I happened to work at a theater house where HBO taped a birthday special for les paul. I was security there, and lo and behold David walks in and watches the show on the side before performing. After the show I went backstage since I was security and met everyone and took pictures. It was the best day I ever worked there. I have a photo of me between Gilmour and VanHalen. They were both great guys.

I love how they labeled "Another Brick" as "The Happiest days."

No, they labelled it correctly.
'Another Brick' Pt.2 doesn't start until the lyrics 'We don't need no education'.
