it's cool to see them laugh it off when they mess up, are nervous or get it wrong, it's also good to see kids happy that they think they are accomplishing something. But the "spelling bee" isn't all that important, if you do partake in it, cool, but don't let it be a competition where if you lose your so broken or if you win you think your on a moral or intellectual high ground, which in many cases swells peoples heads. This is the problem with competitions of any kind.
