I think they are going in the wrong direction. Arm=Cheep cheep cheep you can already get an arm smart book for 40 bucks running windows CE (china). The market is changing, yes your smart book cant run much, but if you get one for 20 bucks who cares.Otherwise buy a netbook or even better a laptop.
@malkdk It has 3D but on i.MX51 it's faster to disable 3D in the Ubuntu UIs, it's an issue about 3D drivers optimization in Ubuntu or something like that. 3D will be faster on i:MX53 and on ARM Cortex A9 processors that are coming out. 3D on ARM laptops is decent, it can do full speed OpenGL games like Quake3 for example.
Ubuntu on Arm will be just like Ubuntu on X86 including USB devices, except:
- Wine will require Bochs and may be slower than full-emulation (Virtualbox), so .NET-lite may see more attention.
- 3D will be weaker
- Proprietary Ubuntu apps (video card drivers, Lotus Notes) won't work unless they recompile, but it should be easy for them if they already have an Ubuntu version.
- Some badly-written software may not work.
- Apps expecting certain hardware setup (like apps on a 3d card) won't work.
hey, ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 ALREADY can run in 2d or even without the NBR menus...why not remove the keyboard and make that a tablet? to me that just looks like they stuck cell phone guts into an oversized netbook shell.
I´m not sure about those ARMs. Can they run every single application that runs in Ubuntu??
Because if that thing loads a regular version of my fully loaded Firefox, including addons, no fans (and totally cool?), I know what my next laptop is...

@1650million Many of the apps, I am not sure the number, but I think over 5000 or 12 thousand or something of the Ubuntu apps work on ARM platforms just as well. But I think the new Linaro project is meant to optimize all that and make sure all the apps work fast. Sure Firefox with all add ons and Google Chrome is being made to work perfect on this.
The guy in this video from Canonical mentions in another video, that anything in Ubuntu's "main" repository will run on ARM.
As far as I can tell this includes Firefox and about 18500 other packages (according to Synaptic).
Though I'm afraid of what Firefox' load times on an ARM CPU will be, when it takes it 5 seconds to load on my 2.83 GHz Quad Core Intel CPU (with an Intel SSD)...
@charbox Where is this?

This beats the Macbook Air by a longshot if the thin factor floats your boat. Ubuntu > Mac.

Wow! That thing looks so amazing! It looks _incredibly_ light the way he just moves it around.
Perhaps this is what will (help to) get people over on Linux? $199 ~1 kg laptops?
What about graphics acceleration? It looks like it has 2D, but not 3D right? Will this (3D acceleration) be available on the A9 Cortex CPU's?

Finally!!!!
Dual core ARM, 1 or 2 gig of RAM.
Loose the touchpad, and give me full sized keyboard and a touch screen and I'll buy it.
Also hoping to get at least 4-core ARM processor inside similar devise in a year or so.

I hope they make the A9 MPCore versions with 2GB RAM and good 12" WSXGA screens and SSD. 10" and 512MB is just too small.
