This was a really great performance for such a very young age. I wasn't able to play this at your age. You play like a mature pianist. It would be an advice for you to keep playing these wonderful pieces as they may come in handy in the future and maybe post more of these performances on YouTube! Sometimes, your interpretations of these pieces may change over periods of time and it would be interesting to listen to all of them!
very good =] ...it could be the recording equipment but there are certain spots that sound like they are not (and should be) played at a piano dynamic...the embellishments could use a bit more emotion but other than that this is very good.

Waw, I play it. This is very nice song. I don't understan, how she play octaves - in this nocturne is very much octaves and she is only 8 years old! She must have mall fingers... Good. Very good :)
I played this song when I was 20 years old. I'm surprised how she can play it and how did she manage to play some chords that are bigger than 1 octave long, that adult players can do it easily but a kid can't stretch his or her little hand to do it. Beautiful.
Obviously, she still has not mastered the fine and beautiful art of rubato, which makes this work especially beautiful, but her presentation is wonderful, my eyes filled with tears.
wonderfull, no other words for you annie, my age is twice of your age and i will bow my head to you if i meet you someday, please continue loving chopin and music.
@Artsie1 ye but one does worry if being that young and so focussed let's the child still be a child. Now don't misunderstand I'm not attacking either her or the parents. I'm just saying it always worries me. It's quite common story with hard pushing competition being to much of a focal point right?
@MrAgnost This depends. There are plenty of accounts of children being pushed in a particular field of study and doing just fine. I think it depends on a couple of factors, one of which being the childs desire to engage in the field they are being pushed. I, for example, always loved science. My grandparents pushed me to study the natural sciences and I'm very well adjusted today. Having spoken with Annie's mother, I don't get the impression that they push her too hard.
@percivul I am glad to hear that :) Thank you for sharing this information , I understand it to be of a personal nature and now everyone is willing to just talk about it like you did. It helps me listen to the music actually , to know this is simply art made an artist wanting to do so and nothing more. I'm looking forward to hearing new work
@MrAgnost You're welcome, and I'm waiting for more from her as well. I'm hoping to one day meet her and her parents in real life. Her mother and I have exchanged a few emails and we agree that it would be wonderful to get together to share stories and whatnot. I would love to watch Annie perform in real life. Maybe one day...
Annie !!! Your playing brings chills to my soul . That was absolutely beautiful. I loved how talented you are and I want to tell you that you are a star !!!!!
Her body moves wonderfully with the piece, but in my opinion, I don't feel it like you should. When she is older and comes back to it, she will be able to draw more emotion out of this piece. Otherwise, amazing job for an 8 year old.
@aerogrl87 Personally, I disagree with your criticism of the LH. Learning this piece myself, I cannot start to state how impresseive this little girls performance is. One thing I'd change would be the flow of the melody, as the LH is a little two seperated between the 4 note sequences. Beautifully played however C:
@MrOlavjwh I agree she played it beautifully especially for her age... I am learning this piece myself as well and for my liking the LH is just a tad to ... there.. for a nocturne
Very good!!!!!!!!! I couldn't play like that when I was eight because I started piano when I was eight! I'm going to beg my parents to let me register for the 2011 Canadian Music Competition. After hearing this, I'm going to play this for my first round. I loved her playing.
keep it up annie great job I love playing that piece 2 I just got the sheet music....btw 3screamingkids - it isn't over coaching, listen to the music that she is playing the feeling is there and without the feeling she couldn't play that way...I think it's naive for you to think it takes life experience to play an emotional piece...mozart wrote his first piece at 4. And it's not grief and sorry lol sorrow would be the tense.
This child is AMAZING!! I started playing the piano at five and this is incredible for an 8 year old!! I don't appreciate the negative comments about her 'lack' or 'misinterpretation' of emotion. She 'feels' the music and plays beautifully and I hope she continues her playing....
she does look a little silly with her body movements, but come on she's EIGHT! she plays beautifully for anyone and masterfully for an eight year old. good job, little lady!
No, about the body choreographies -- they are genuine: it's really who she is as a musician. When you see her play the Bach invention #13 her kinesis is completely different, in perfect response to the music. I'm not sure it's "emoting" either -- with piano, once you strike the note it's over, and the movement through space is in synch with the duration of the sound. It's part of her excellent rhythm and phrasing -- a little kid playing like a little kid would always be "early".
@3screamingkids No, no you got it all wrong! You see, she twist and turn because she has to play softer or harder on the different keys. Not because she is feeling any grief or any sorrow, that's not why she makes her movement.
Her movements are extremely unnatural but beautiful playing anyways. I'm learning this piece by myself right now and those runs are pretty difficult. Great job :)
I agree about the body movements, but who says that a child hasn't gone through griefs enough to make them emotional when they play these pieces? The worst kind of horrors often involve children.
I have to watch this performance again and again...
your musicality is unbelievable dear Annie, you are already a great young musician and don't let anyone tell you that you can't be one of the best in the future!
truly, most part of this piece is not difficult and having beautiful melody. i agreed she might move too much, or might be she was really overshelmed by her perception. anyway, definely a good interpretation

I agree with 3screamingkids. Chopin is not usually taught to children because the emotion he projects is not one a child can interpret based on experience. It is almost as beautiful in the case of this young girl but she does have exaggerated movements that look somewhat unnatural on a child.
Talented girl, indeed. This is not a particularly difficult nocturne, but, as all Chopin's pieces, is difficult very difficult in the phrasing, sound quality, balance and dynamics. This is not an easy job for an eight years old girl, and she does an amazing interpretation of this nocturne. Promising talent! BRAVO Annie!
Thanks for your response Janet. It is so inspiring to see a parent as equally enthusiastic about their child. Keep up the good work and I must tell you words can't describe Annie's talent. My daughter's and I just finished watching some of her videos and my other daughter who is the drummer just got up and went on to her sisters piano. Talk about Insipiration!
She may only be 8 but plays this piece better than many professionals I've heard. Hard to believe someone her age can grasp the complexities of chopin's music.
This is a situation where the player cannot be separated from the instrument, emotionally and physically. They are ONE, mind and body....An incredibly intense and mature performance.
i dont know this song....but i can truly say it is beautiful n idont like classical much and this girl truly plays with feel...keep plaing and doing what you do ;)
Annie--Please don't ever let anyone tell you how to play, how to move, or how to interpret. You're doing just fine. Read what Josef Hofmann wrote about piano playing and his lessons with Anton Rubinstein. Listen to Hofmann's recordings. Hofmann couldn't reach the pedal with his feet at your age. No pianist ever surpassed him technically, and he was known for his interpretations. You may be as fine an interpreter. Stick to fundamentals with your good teacher. Iron out the difficulties with time.

This is a situation where the player cannot be separated from the instrument, emotionally and physically. They are ONE, mind and body....An incredibly intense and mature performance.

Most children just play things note for note, but I actually feel emotion coming from this.
