why do some have pick guards and some dont? I prefer no pick guard

I really want to buy this guitar but cant decide between this one or the dreadnought version. Any advice on wich of the two has better sound overall?

@exionem this one is a cedar top so the sound is warmer I'd play the both immediately one after another if possible and see which one you simply like the sound of better. I like cedar personally but if the sides aren't the right wood it gets too warm for me and not loud enough...
