Nouvelle Vague's cover has no depth in its emotion. A very soft interpretation that sound pretty but ultimately is meaningless. The girl just cant relate to what the song means
@ajp55a i have to disagree with you dude. i think there both really good. of course the original is better but the nouvelles version is fuckin powerful too.
Absolutely gorgeous tune. The parent album is pretty damned fine too - one of the most cruelly underrated bands of the time chiefly cos they were a Factory Records band who happened to be influenced by New Order. Dreamy ambience, heartbreaking melancholia.....orchestrated bliss. Agree that the songs on the album (Here Comes Everybody) all sound a bit samey and lack diversity (dominated by the keyboard sound and glacial guitar and wistful vocals) but the echo-y production makes it sound dreamy!

I really don't understand why people prefer covers to the original...or maybe I do, devolution. Nouvelle Vague's version is nice but this is the original, it's better no matter what.
@CapTainBuckAHOE or try listening to it when you still love your ex girlfriend and you still think about her every single day even though youve broken up about 3 years ago...
This version is waaay better, it is much more introspective and more heartfelt. The Nouvelle Vague version sounds more "commonplace" , especially with the bossanova-ish guitar rendition and overdone kittenish vocals.
I already love Nouvelle Vague's cover, and hearing this - you have to give respect to the original. An underrated band you are, but now it sounds like you're playing a quality tune in the wrong era and with too much synth. Love.

Best song off the album...
Some trivia, some of the lyrics from 'Melancholy man' were taken from Don McLean's song 'Vincent.
