'tis good that they fail people for going unreasonably slow. 40mph in a 70 such as the nsl area in the video above can be just as dangerous as 100mph.
@oozey262 I don't get it either. It's bad enough people get nervous as shit on these tests, but failing them for actually wanting to be cautious? Nobody becomes a master at driving the speed limit without experience.
The speed limit is the maximum. You are in no way obligated to go the speed limit! You should not go so slow as to be a hazard on a highway, but other than that, you may drive under the limit legally all you want to.
No compaints to failing drivers going too slow. It's called unreasonable progress, where appropriate. I've noticed a lot of people doing 50mph where the national speed limit applies on roads that are straight, with no obvious reason why. It's stupid. If you're doing less than the speed limit where it is safe to do so, you're a nuisance. It's called unreasonable progress. Obviously this only applies to vehicles that are able to reach the said speeds.
Fair enough if your doin like 20mph on a 70 limit, yeah... but i am always told to drive the speed thats appropriate and the speed limit is a "limit" not a "target"... -_-
I hate an old fart going 30mph on a national speed limit road just as much as a young punk whos driving dangerous. The old fart puts me ill at ease, its uncomfortable when you are unable to overtake.
@Pentdad Whats worse than that im sure you will agree is if that national speed limit road is bendy. If some old fart is doing 30mph, and you are doing the 60mph limit, and all of a sudden around a bendy country lane is someone crawling at 30mph, the hopes are dramatically more dangerous than someone who is doing over the speed limit..... There IS such a thing as too slow, and I wish more drivers would understand that.
@paulisthebest3uk Make all old farts retake their driving test. And ban all old farts from voting. The stupid old codgers vote red or blue the same way they were doing 50 years ago. The stupid old fools.
I can understand an examiner failing someone for driving 20mph under the national speed limit (even though there was plenty of room and lanes for others to overtake), but failing someone for driving 5mph below the speed limit is just ridiculous. It may frustrate other drivers but it's much better than doing 5mph OVER the speed limit and endangering others.
Why is it dangerous? I drive a vehicle that has a maximum speed of 58mph on the level, unladen. If laden, or on hills, that speed drops considerably. I cannot even hope to achieve 60mph, so if I were to take a driving test in that vehicle, you are saying I should fail? Just because there is a maximum, does not mean there is a minimum speed limit. Is it an Urban Clearway with a minimum speed?
its not a minimum speed, its because the instructors feel that you didnt know that they were was change in speed, which is total bollocks in my opinion.
In Northern Ireland the limits is the lower of the posted limit for the road or 45mph, and the 45mph restriction applies until one year after passing your test.

@ForceHSS Don't try and deviate the argument. How are you able to deal with speeds above 45 mph when you're never even allowed to practice going over those speeds. So i'll say again 45 mph wtf??!!?
@ForceHSS And no you were not correct, this video was set in Great Britain so you should have known before you started this stupid argument that the motor rules and regulations would differ. Just apologize and move out.
@forceHSS There is no max speed limit for learner drivers in the UK, what applies to a full licence holder applies to a learner, apart from the fact that the learner can not drive alone or on motorways.
@sholao have you even started to drive read your highway code book max speed for a learner is 45 mph I have been driving the last 22 years. A learner can not drive alone no matter on a high way or not a learner must have a full uk driver that has been holding a full licence for 3 years or more to sit beside them they can never drive the car with just them selfs in it
@ForceHSS You obviously haven't read your highway code in 22 years then. A learner can drive up to 70mph providing they are supervised, not on a motorway and that is the speed allowed on that particular road. How do you expect a new driver to be prepared for motorways/dual carriageways if they cannot practice at those speeds? For the rest of your comment you are right though.
@schmeeling show me where in the book it says this as I have it in front of me now and it is saying different from what you are saying and this my son is learning to drive and got the book 2 days ago
@ForceHSS Obviously I can't SHOW you it, which section is it in because I can't find it and I'm looking at the newest version online as my one is from 4 years ago
@petechett read your highway code book all the answers are there if you want to pass your test you must know all the rules about speed and yes max speed for a L driver is 45 mph A road
Actually doing 50 in a 70 zone isn't dangerous, it's called driving economically. Driving at 50 instead of 70 can save you about 30% in fuel. Dangerously slow in my opinion is anything under 40mph.
I failed my 1st by going above 30 in what looks like more than 30mph road, the 2nd test I failed because I was thinking best defensive is strong offensive,so I was driving too slow ,I got 3x under 30 speed on street road while did well in Motor ways, the examiner told me I could control motorways why I couldnt on street,I was thinking it was raining so I could go slow, but PASSED 3RD TIMES PERFECT WITH INDEPENDENCE DRIVING ONLY 3 MINOR FAULTS
there is no fail i did not see the fail! i wanted to see a crash or something or geting pulled over. but there is a other video on youtube that there is this guy all these people driveing and talking on the phone when there doing the driveing test!
I got two minors in my test for doing like 23 or something in a 30 zone. Better than failing for going too fast but two minors could be the difference between passing and failing.
Pay attention to speed limit signs and then just hug that speed. If it feels too fast then you're not ready to be driving.
I failed one test when the examiner's seat collapsed and he ended up in the rear with his legs in the air. I was disappointed to fail but it was worth it because all his change fell out of his pockets and I made about 9 quid profit.
There is no rule/sign saying MINIMUM SPEED but there is a rule which says "you have to make progress when you are on the road".
So it makes sense, while driving way under the max limit, you are also obstructing the other road users and creating a potential hazard regardless of what lane you are driving in.
@MannDexx reason for them not putting the number is..if there's a change in national speed limit may change in future.. say for example reduced to 65 or increased to 80 (right now its 70 mph), then they dont need to go re-write the numbers.. that's a variable not fixed for life.. this is my thought..
@MannDexx reason for them not putting the number is..if there's a change in national speed limit.. say for example reduced to 65 or increased to 80 (right now its 70 mph), then they dont need to go re-write the numbers in the million places.. that's a variable not fixed for life.. this is my thought..
Failed my test today (Oct 15, 2010)! During independent driving missed the sign for a roundabout and approached it at dangerously high speed (50 mph).
Just before the test my request to drive at NSL, while practicing, was turned down by my cunning instructor on the ground that I would not be required of this! I was in disbelief when, just 7-8 minutes into my test, I was on dual carriageway with NSL for independent driving!
Can someone suggest a good instructor in Southampton? @07894204373
@bAtTyGrEaSe hope it goes all well mate im sure u will do better then last time just some of these examiners r well idiots and some decide who to pass and not to pass best of luck cheers
This happened to me on my previous test in Birmingham. Is it just me or is it odd that the speed limit cancellation signs look nothing like the limit signs themselves?
That's weird, on my driving test I did around 45mph on a national speed limit road. It wasn't a dual carriageway, but I still passed and I didn't get a minor for doing 45mph on a national speed limit.
45mph was probably safe for the conditions. A single carrageway has a 60mph limit but on some national speed limit roads ive been on anything over 35mph is suicidal due to the blind hairpin bends, steep banks, and roads just about wide enough for 2 cars.
thnx mate for the reply some of the examiners r wankers buh yeh i did pass just the other guy in the back was a cockhead as well as the one who was accessing me all wankers buh its done now got the legit licenece and all set cheers mate
@chubby4king oor yeah i had a second examiner too, unfortunatly i failed my first one, tomorrow is my second, im scared haha and i carnt sleep its 5 am and i have it at 9am :S hope a red bull will help me :)
deal with it all examiners r wankers, all they want is u too resit the exam even tho a minor mistake is made even it isnt serious in chingford espeically all examiners r wankers even i passed
i had my test at chingford and the examiner took to me to a rote towards loughton and there was a national speed limit and i was doing 50 it was a single lane and i didnt pass coz of that :S can anyone tell me please why is this examiner soo excited and also just before the test began and i left the center there was some other guy who goes im going to be joining you on your test and was sitting behind but i swear who is that guy and he was just like im just going to sit and watch thats not right
@chubby4king the guy sitting behind you was probably assessing the examiner, that happens sometimes, they see how well the examiner is doing, but it mean that they are less likely to let you off minor mistakes so they don't get in trouble
examiners can pass and fail who ever they want but if u drive perfect you will always pass evrybody from london should go chingford its very easy i didnt even need any lessons there to pass
yeh its not hard at all if u concerntrate the only thing you need to worry about is the bay parking its in the test centre car park and its very steep so make sure u put plenty of gas in when ur reversing or u will stall and 3 stalls while doing it is a fail. goodluck to u and be confident and dont EVER!!!!!!!!! hesitate
hehe i just passed my test with 4 minors but th cunts failed me wen the 1st time i only had one minor. AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT and the bitch put tht as a serious...and then fort to reassure me by sayin i'm an excellent driver but i failed . wtf!!!! god if sh was a man i wud have punched him between the eyes
favzzakafabio Don't worry about it; just because theres a certain limit it doesnt mean you have to take it up to that limit. some people see 30 MPH signs and speed past it by doing like 45 MPH; going over it.
@fabzzakafabio that's bad.they watch your speed like a hawk.i did like 38mph on a 40mph road and 29 mph on the thirty with odd glances at the speedometer and i got away with that.but doing 35 on a 40? that seems unfair that they'd fail you for that.i hope you've since passed anyway
@kathryn8169 yeh they are total wankers, but i shortly passed a month after i left the comment, third time lucky i suppose , and i have to admit it was the worse drive out of the three, just totally depends on the examiner and there mood =\
@fabzzakafabio i don't see why, the highway code clearly states that a speed limit is not a target, you might have a need to travel at a slower speed and 35 in a 40 is not dangerous - i would appeal.
i think theres a rule buried deep in the highway code somewhere saying you have do do 50mph or more on a 70mph road. Thats why lorries were limited to 60mph (now 55mph)
Im no expert tbh its just word of mouth, i do 80+ on a national speed limit dual / motorway anyway so i dont care about going below the minimum
@THUMPBUMPDUDE I do agree, however everyone gets pissed off when theyre stuck behind some old granny doing 30 in a 40. People only think of these things one way, if you think about other people and how they annoy you when they go at xx speed in an xx limit then you will want to avoid being in the same criteria.
Yes there are,but it would be uneconomical to put them everwhere. There is also a highway code that says drive to the road conditions making progress where possible and keeping up with other traffic.
If you need to be told that 25 MPH on a motorway is dangerous you should stick to buses and trains
@THUMPBUMPDUDE There are laws as well as safety concerns. Believe it or not, driving too slow is a huge safety problem. You clearly don't belong on the road.
@THUMPBUMPDUDE Not a sign as such but it's in the highway code. It's obvious if you are going very slow on a fast road a car will catch up with you before they realise what speed you are going = rear shunt = very bad accident. People who aren't prepared to go the speed limit shouldn't be driving on that road.
I think driving examiners need to also focus on teaching people where to stop at traffic lights. Sounds daft, but I drive all day every day and I regularly see people stopping at repeater lights i.e in the middle of junctions etc. FYI you stop at the stop line - if you're in slow traffic and the light changes when you're in the middle of the junction, then you obviously take care and caution and may have to stop if pedestrians step out, but you don't stop at the repeater light.
there is minimum speed limit its called 0 cuz when 0 ur not moving thats not called driving thats calling being stupid by sitting in a car doing nothing
sholao-I thing you are absolutely right. I am a profesional driver, and I had" my hands full" many times, avoiding slow drivers.speeders are easy, just zip by,and disapear..slow drivers are very dangerous,If one can't drive faster thrn 50 mph.one has no business being on the speedway or any other trafic.don't feel sefe? take a bus.
It depends which car you are driving and what kind of roads there are. 50 mph which is 80 kph that would be quite fast feeling speed on twisted roads. And if you are driving some very small "Pokemon car" (lol) :) Toyota Aygo etc.
'Luckaly, I had a driving instructor that understood this, you don't seem to.'
Richard everyone of my pupils gets pratice at driving close to 70mph before I advice them they are ready for the DSA test, so I would have dealth with any issues.
If you can't drive a car above 50mph you are not ready for the test, so there is no excuse for ignoring the sign, driving too slow can just be as dangerous as speeding, which is why you fail for driving at 50 mph on a NSL dual carriageway.
what percent can you go over and under the national speed limit? my mate told me it was 10% also a dual carriage way is 6o mph in a car so if this is true about 10% then you are going to slow by 5mph right?
For the information of anyone who reads these comments:
Dual Carriageway in a car at National is 70mph, going 60 may not fail your test as it is an adequate speed, any lower will.. but some examiners may still fail you so i'd advise 5% maximum deviation above or below the speed limit.. IE : 70 zone, aim for 67-73 mph. Generally it's best to go as close to the limit as you can to keep traffic flowing.
'tis good that they fail people for going unreasonably slow. 40mph in a 70 such as the nsl area in the video above can be just as dangerous as 100mph.

Therefore you dont do 30 or 60. you do 70.
Doing 30 - 50mph on this road would cause a hazard which is probably why people are failed for driving ''too slow''
It wont just be the fact your driving too slow. its the fact you cant read road signs and adhere to what they are telling you which will contribute

i had my test at chingford and the examiner took to me to a rote towards loughton and there was a national speed limit and i was doing 50 it was a single lane and i didnt pass coz of that :S can anyone tell me please why is this examiner soo excited and also just before the test began and i left the center there was some other guy who goes im going to be joining you on your test and was sitting behind but i swear who is that guy and he was just like im just going to sit and watch thats not right
chubby4king 1 year ago
@chubby4king the guy sitting behind you was probably assessing the examiner, that happens sometimes, they see how well the examiner is doing, but it mean that they are less likely to let you off minor mistakes so they don't get in trouble
muldul3 1 year ago
examiners can pass and fail who ever they want but if u drive perfect you will always pass evrybody from london should go chingford its very easy i didnt even need any lessons there to pass

yeh its not hard at all if u concerntrate the only thing you need to worry about is the bay parking its in the test centre car park and its very steep so make sure u put plenty of gas in when ur reversing or u will stall and 3 stalls while doing it is a fail. goodluck to u and be confident and dont EVER!!!!!!!!! hesitate

I Failed my test for going 35mph for a period of less than a minute on a 40mph road. Total Wankers.
fabzzakafabio 2 years ago 62
favzzakafabio Don't worry about it; just because theres a certain limit it doesnt mean you have to take it up to that limit. some people see 30 MPH signs and speed past it by doing like 45 MPH; going over it.
Alecoc14 2 years ago
@fabzzakafabio that's bad.they watch your speed like a hawk.i did like 38mph on a 40mph road and 29 mph on the thirty with odd glances at the speedometer and i got away with that.but doing 35 on a 40? that seems unfair that they'd fail you for that.i hope you've since passed anyway
kathryn8169 1 year ago
@kathryn8169 yeh they are total wankers, but i shortly passed a month after i left the comment, third time lucky i suppose , and i have to admit it was the worse drive out of the three, just totally depends on the examiner and there mood =\

@fabzzakafabio i failed for going 40 in a 60 BUT it was quite curvy roads,.....
ali050792 4 months ago
@fabzzakafabio i don't see why, the highway code clearly states that a speed limit is not a target, you might have a need to travel at a slower speed and 35 in a 40 is not dangerous - i would appeal.
urbex2007 4 months ago
??drive too slow?? is there a signt that says MINIMUM speed ?
THUMPBUMPDUDE 2 years ago 43
@THUMPBUMPDUDE
i think theres a rule buried deep in the highway code somewhere saying you have do do 50mph or more on a 70mph road. Thats why lorries were limited to 60mph (now 55mph)
Im no expert tbh its just word of mouth, i do 80+ on a national speed limit dual / motorway anyway so i dont care about going below the minimum
spyder2001 1 year ago
@THUMPBUMPDUDE I do agree, however everyone gets pissed off when theyre stuck behind some old granny doing 30 in a 40. People only think of these things one way, if you think about other people and how they annoy you when they go at xx speed in an xx limit then you will want to avoid being in the same criteria.
JestaZX6R 1 year ago
@THUMPBUMPDUDE
Yes there are,but it would be uneconomical to put them everwhere. There is also a highway code that says drive to the road conditions making progress where possible and keeping up with other traffic.
If you need to be told that 25 MPH on a motorway is dangerous you should stick to buses and trains
dunpostyn 1 year ago
@THUMPBUMPDUDE Going significantly slower than the speed limit is considered a traffic impediment.
DevSolar 10 months ago
@THUMPBUMPDUDE There are laws as well as safety concerns. Believe it or not, driving too slow is a huge safety problem. You clearly don't belong on the road.
paperbanjo 10 months ago
@THUMPBUMPDUDE Not a sign as such but it's in the highway code. It's obvious if you are going very slow on a fast road a car will catch up with you before they realise what speed you are going = rear shunt = very bad accident. People who aren't prepared to go the speed limit shouldn't be driving on that road.
schmeeling 6 months ago
@THUMPBUMPDUDE no but it is dangerous
HTFCbarmyarmyHTFC 5 months ago
I think driving examiners need to also focus on teaching people where to stop at traffic lights. Sounds daft, but I drive all day every day and I regularly see people stopping at repeater lights i.e in the middle of junctions etc. FYI you stop at the stop line - if you're in slow traffic and the light changes when you're in the middle of the junction, then you obviously take care and caution and may have to stop if pedestrians step out, but you don't stop at the repeater light.
krskipp 2 years ago
Those signs are obvious, sometimes they're hidden behind a bush and you're supposed to notice it. There isn't a minimum speed limit anyway.
HamsterAtDawn 2 years ago
there is minimum speed limit its called 0 cuz when 0 ur not moving thats not called driving thats calling being stupid by sitting in a car doing nothing

sholao-I thing you are absolutely right. I am a profesional driver, and I had" my hands full" many times, avoiding slow drivers.speeders are easy, just zip by,and disapear..slow drivers are very dangerous,If one can't drive faster thrn 50 mph.one has no business being on the speedway or any other trafic.don't feel sefe? take a bus.
Toulavej58 3 years ago
It depends which car you are driving and what kind of roads there are. 50 mph which is 80 kph that would be quite fast feeling speed on twisted roads. And if you are driving some very small "Pokemon car" (lol) :) Toyota Aygo etc.
temelon 3 years ago
'Luckaly, I had a driving instructor that understood this, you don't seem to.'
Richard everyone of my pupils gets pratice at driving close to 70mph before I advice them they are ready for the DSA test, so I would have dealth with any issues.
If you can't drive a car above 50mph you are not ready for the test, so there is no excuse for ignoring the sign, driving too slow can just be as dangerous as speeding, which is why you fail for driving at 50 mph on a NSL dual carriageway.
sholao 3 years ago 14
what percent can you go over and under the national speed limit? my mate told me it was 10% also a dual carriage way is 6o mph in a car so if this is true about 10% then you are going to slow by 5mph right?
ferrariairwolf 3 years ago
ferrariairwolf,
I've answered your question on my blog as I think it will benefit a lot of people.
Search for the too slow post.

@ferrariairwolf It´s 10%
DuvalNorway 1 year ago
For the information of anyone who reads these comments:
Dual Carriageway in a car at National is 70mph, going 60 may not fail your test as it is an adequate speed, any lower will.. but some examiners may still fail you so i'd advise 5% maximum deviation above or below the speed limit.. IE : 70 zone, aim for 67-73 mph. Generally it's best to go as close to the limit as you can to keep traffic flowing.
Hirotoro4692 1 year ago
@ferrariairwolf 10% of 60 is 6... Not 5...
BlackOutAngel1313 1 year ago
@ferrariairwolf
in canada it is and even less 50km/h on a normal road : 90max Zone.
and 60km/h min on super big fast 100km/h road.
hitachi088 10 months ago
Many people *Dont* miss that sign. 4 years ago, I learnt to drive in the UK, and was faced with the same issue.
Many students don't feel SAFE driving at higher speeds than 50mph.
Luckaly, I had a driving instructor that understood this, you don't seem to.
It might be something to think about the next time, as it may improve the way your pupils learn.
