Vito could easily have run to the FBI, told them everything he knew about murders, racketeering etc got himself immunity and a new life by betraying his friends, but he didn't, he was dumb enough to remain loyal and trust them.

Yeah, but Tony's connections in the local police would not be allow him to find Vito who had fled out of state. Tony didn't have any corrupt FBI agents on his side, if he had done then he would never have had to fear whether he was under federal indictment, which was one of his biggest fears throughout the series.

I'm sure with the knowledge Vito had of Soprano family criminality over the years he would have been offered full immunity and relocation.

I was a bit disappointed by the ending, but it befitted the show, with all of the show's unfinished plots and committment to realism. Chase supposedly ended it ambiguously because he dislikes the normal Hollywood/TV way of doing things which is to leave nothing to the imagination of the viewer.

He was friends with Harris but I doubt Harris would have compromised an FBI investigation into Tony by handing over a potential witness.
