Back onto "lighter things," this mid-90's (it had to be about '95 or '96 when this commercial originally aired on the idiot box) ad was so, SO funny back then. When Gary got whacked with that spatula (0:30)--which was suppose to represent the presence of the "Choc Burger," I guess--I bugged out back then! Lol! (I wonder how much they paid Gary to take a shot like that...) BTW, does that "Choc Burger" still exist? I'd love to try one. :-)
Man...R.I.P., Mr. Gary Coleman...Arnold!!! :-) Seriously, though...I'ma miss that little dude. (I also remember being a bit pissed when 'Tatoo'--Hervé Villechaize--capped himself back in the day. I was actually mad about that.) And, real talk (or, type! :-)), I never once laughed and/or made fun or Gary's misfortunes over the years. I just couldn't do it. I was always a fan. Never a HUGE fan, but a fan, nonetheless. Again, R.I.P., Mr. Coleman.
@TonyHirsch He does, actually. He was on one of the earlier seasons of Surreal Life and freaked out on co-star Vanilla Ice when he asked him to recite that line just for kicks. Vanilla Ice is the last person who should be ragging on someone, so to see him doing that to Gary Coleman was amusing to say the least. Coleman's got issues, to be fair. The ironic thing is is that with a positive attitude and savvy marketing, he could make himself some good coin.
Yeah, the guy's definitely got issues but I think he's made a habit of surrounding himself with people who are out to help themselves more than they're out to help him. That's funny about the Vanilla Ice thing--Where that guy gets off ripping on anyone is beyond me. I agree though about Gary, with a change of attitude and management he could do pretty well. Although he's turned himself into such a self-parodying novelty that I don't know where he'd go from here...
@TonyHirsch Agreed. He uses his parents and his height as a crutch in my opinion. They're all factors that should have been resolved years ago. Yeah, it probably sucks being short, but he's been short his entire life. What's more, there are dwarves who have it worse than him. At least he's proportional and doesn't have all the orthopedic issues that those suffering from acondroplasia do. His financial issues are 20 years behind him. He's had years to move beyond that.
@jstephenj My take is that he's the same person he was at the height of his career, only 20 years have passed. By numerous accounts he was a very difficult person to deal with personally and professionally -- just like Tattoo was from Fantasy Island. I'm sure in Coleman's mind he was going to go on to become the next Denzel Washington, or have a career trajectory like Jodie Foster or Drew Barrymore. That didn't pan out, and I think he's bitter about that.
@TonyHirsch He's a pop culture icon. Look at how much a joke William Shatner is, and how despite this, he was able to parlay that into a formidible brand. The problem with Coleman these days is that he's so quick tempered. The people want to laugh with him, but because he tends to lash out defensively, people end up laughing at him.
True, Shatner has a similar self-parodying quality and was able to do something with it. But not to sound bigoted in any way, I think Gary's physical traits make it harder for him (as opposed to someone like Shatner) to brand himself as anything but "that really undersized round guy who used to be cute and funny."
@TonyHirsch Funny, I can't see Shatner as anything else than that egomaniacal jerk who plays Capt. Kirk on Star Trek. Yet that's never stopped casting directors from using him to promote other brands. Isn't he on a legal drama now? I think he was even nominated for an Emmy for that role. As much of a pop culture parody that Shatner has become, he's still contemporary and given a considerable measure of respect these days. I can't see how they couldn't do that with Coleman.
@jstephenj If he had a more positive upbeat attitude, I think he could get steady work. But because of his well documented temper and his antics off the camera, he's seen as a liability to producers and casting agents. The late midget actor, Billy Barty, got steady work up until his death, and that was because he was easy to work with. Barty probably knew that he would never recieve George Clooney type roles, but that never affected his work ethic. And that is why he was always in demand.
@jstephenj Coleman, has/had a degree of pop culture recognition that Barty could only dream of at the height of his career. And the kicker of it all is that Coleman doesn't even have to try. People just recognize him even after all these years. No one would recognize Eddie Munster these days, or John Boy for that matter. Coleman, at least, has a unique look and one that could translate into money if he could just get his act together.
You're exactly right. Plus I think Captain Kirk had (and still has) enough of his own "cool" that some of its aura rubbed off on Shatner himself, so he still gets cast. Gary, not so much...
@TonyHirsch I think in Gary's case it has more to do with the recent meanderings in his private life and his difficult personality. If he wanted to, he could get work. Maybe not on the level of George Clooney or Matt Damon, but he could find work in novelty roles and comedic roles. His novelty value, of course, would probably come from his stunted height, but it would be more doable than the capacity he finds himself in now.
@TonyHirsch I don't think he's in jail now. He pled guilty to a misdemeanor and paid a small fine. He was, however, interviewed on the Insider and completely lost it on the hosts.
@jstephenj What's more, he could use clever humor and self-depreciation to disempower some of the ridicule thats slung his way. Look at Jackie Gleason. His fans know he was fat. But they also recognized that his talent and wit overshadowed this fact. He was an amazing talent, and yet he never fit the leading man standard, and although he could have become have easily become a punchline based on his appearance, he didn't, and actually used that to his advantage.
Know what I mean? Like Shatner can go on his talk show and over-emote all he wants because that's his thing. But if Gary tried the that we'd all wonder why he has a show and what he was bringing to the party besides being small and formerly cute (and yes, his temper only makes him funnier to laugh AT). I think once his physical attributes started working against him (when he was no longer cute but just hard to cast) he should have gone behind the camera and become a producer or director.
@TonyHirsch I don't think he's unattractive by any means. Granted, he's not George Clooney, but he practically looks and sounds the same as he did back when he was doing Diffrent Strokes.
Yes, but just hard to cast as anything other than a novelty. There's just no overcoming his, um, shortcomings. You know? He can't do, for example, a cop show, but he could do a quirky short cop show. His physical characteristics will always be his most prevalent feature so he'll always be cast by how he appears. And I think in the entertainment industry, an unusual appearance needs a reason to be there, i.e. the focus of the story or it leaves people wondering why he was cast. Ah, poor Gary...
@TonyHirsch And his publicity stunts don't do him any favors, either. Him announcing his marriage to his wife is one thing, but telling the world that he's still a virgin? Was he that naive to think that he wasn't going to become a laughing stock on the late night comedy circuit? I feel for Coleman given his crappy circumstances, but his financial troubles with his parents are 20 years behind him. He needs to put to rest his past and move on.
