There's no point in doing a cover if you're trying to make the song sound exactly the same, you should make the song into your own version. A great example of this is DIR EN GREY's cover of THE STALIN's song 「ワルシャワの幻想」 (Warsaw no Gensou).

And this is a "Vaderish" version of Mayhems orginal, as cover should be.

Have to agree with Bathoroysgraveland. Bands cover these songs in respect and admiration. Why would they try to sound like Mayhem? I love black metal to death, but FUCK black metal "purist" fans. There's other metal out there than Black Metal you fucks. There's nothing wrong with a death metal band covering a black metal song. It's like Blind Guardian covering The Beach Boy's "Surfin' USA." It's one of their favorite bands, so why not cover it in a version of your own?

The musicians interviewed on the subject expressed a extreme hatred for Death Metal. They didn't like the way Death Metal musicians portrayed themselves as being lazy, going up on stage looking like they just went out for a jog in their sweat pants, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. Thus the reason the Black Metal look was born. Early Black Metal musicians hated Death Metal.
