Rotary engine is not japanese. Felkix Wankel made it for NSU Ro80 (audi) in the 60's and mazda has only a license to re-build this engines. German Engineer power :)

The Wankel motor was first deisgned in the early 50s and the design was ultimately licensed out to multiple companies. Most of the automobile manufacturers at the time attempted to make the motor work with their cars but only one could. Mazda had to significantly revamp the design to make it more reliable and easier on pollutants. Mazda's designs are unique and the only ones that can be used realistically.
