i am glad i stumbled upon this clip... i said too a freind of mine. hearns and mclellan are so alike it would be like watching the same person fight, and well well well...i was right.. two great fighters.... i wish mclellan all the best, i hope when his freind's retire they remember him...
@jurdoc11 What kind of garbage are you talking? Not only was Hearns more explosive than either (WTF are you on about "awkward"?), but he was past his prime by the time these guys came into prominence, fighting at a higher weight. That's the "reason" the fights never came off. And if you're to judge based on this footage, you can clearly see who the superior boxer is, and it ain't McClellan.
@2010MujahidBoxing It's just an exhibition, they don't take place much nowadays, but in the past, they were regular occurence. Sparring sessions which made a few bucks here and there, that's all really.
@shire2005 wow are you a hearns hater? i ask bcos every hearns vid i see your name doubting him, hearns would have smoked mclellan do you think mclellan would be able to take the punches hagler took, no way haglers chin saved him in that 1st rd but i know geralds wouldn't have.
@shire2005 Hearns is controlling the centre of the ring and backing Mclellan up in an exhibition. Even though his brutal WW/LMW powers had diminished slightly by this time he was still faster and a better boxer than Mclellan. Plus, the only fight he'd lost in the past couple of years at this time was to Barkley and he lost that fight through arrogance, not because he was outworked in any way.
Fantastic! What a great fight that could have been, if it was for real. I think Hearns would have been favourite, but McClellan's technical ability was very underrated. People seem to remember him as a puncher.
Thats because he was puncher , he used to merely paw the jab out as a range finder to fire over his massive concussive shots , he had no interest in boxing for long periods in a fight he went in there to destroy as quick as possible
Tommys lightest weights in the pros was 144 twice once to Willie Wren (3rd pro fight) and to Jerry Strickland that came in at 137 (2nd pro fight) who by the way finished his career at 13-122 homie was KO'd 78 of those times..... yikes!!!
yeah agree frisbyrb5 - he was far too skinny for his large frame early on - he was a minimum supermiddle at his best potential - a shame he fought at middle and below - that's when he got knocked the fuck out so many times - too light for him - he must have starved
@kewlkid629 Not only that, the shots he took from Ray Leonard were very, very hard. A guy with a weak chin doesn't survive round 7 of that fight, against a fantastic fighter in his prime. I still think the fight was stopped too soon too, but, either way, he took a lot of punishment that fight.
Against Hagler he just wore down. He was shaky before the round began.
Barkley's KO was a pure KO though.
Even so, he didn't have that bad of a chin. It just wasn't great.
Okay, let's suppose these two met at around 160 pounds when McClellan was a bit more experienced - say 1993. Can the Hitman's chin hold up? And after seeing this, I'm praying that the amateur bout between Roy and Gerald shows up somewhere too. This may not have been all that exciting, but it's great to have it out there.
yeah good stuff. i'll always remember benn mclellan for the right reasons: two warriors toe to toe. the consequences of it are a shame but to be honest, i don't think mclellan was a nice human being at the time of fighting benn.
Wow, thanks for posting this. Rare indeed. This is a public sparring session for Tommy during the week leading up to a title fight so they're not going to try and kill each other, especially since Gerald is just a green prospect at the time.
Agreed, no intention to throw punches with mean intentions but both from the same gym so can't hurt each other. I've seen public exhibitions like this before and they are always lame.
It is 1990. Whered u hear McClellan was 21? Listen to the introductions, it says Tommy Hearns will be fighting Michael Olajide on Saturday night and that fight took place on 4/28/1990.

2 of my favourite fighters, both always went for the knockout and were ferocious punchers, probably the 2 biggest punchers in middleweight history

There is a reason Hearns never fought G-Man or Julian Jackson. He would've been blown away. Both were far too explosive for awkward Hearns.

prime for prime this would have been a good fight, they are very similair

Is there a greater 'What if' in boxing than what would have happened if McClellan had stuck with Manny Steward?
Saw him beat Mugabi and lose to Benn.
Hearns was always value for money, win, lose or draw.

We all know what the result of this fight would have been. No way Tommy could take McClellen's power. Probably another 3rd rd KO loss.
