can you imagine what this would have looked like had they kept it wrapped above ground, on jack stands in a small room completely sealed off with brick or cinder block?
I talked to a guy who is an engineer and was there when they did this and he said that is what he kept telling them, but the committee wouldn't listen to him. He also wanted to connect the vault to the HVAC system to control the atmosphere. Too bad they didn't listen.....
LOl trust the americans to let all that shit and dusty destroy the car. i.e. rust it and screw up the duco, ive found 40 year cars left in sheds that still have a decent paint job with little rust. Honestly, how hard would it have been?
you will never see a time capsule regardless of type sitting in a shed. time capsules are burried and unearthed at a designated time. thus this car being put in a 9ft+ deep hole no shit it isn't going to look good.
That car would have looked like it rolled off a car showroom and been in working condition if the Germans were in charge of the burial. Germans can do anything but beat the Americans in Wars
It was a publicity stunt in 1957. During the Cold War, they figured we would all be nuked and the 57 Belvidere would survive underground and be an example of technology after "The Big One"
It was really too far gone to make it restorable. Some company back east is trying to stop the rust, but from what I saw, there is not going to be much to work with. It is worth more as an example of the effects of corrosion.
Officials took different precautions for the car in the 1998 time capsule. Encased in modern plastics and stored in a vault above ground, a 1998 Plymouth Prowler was entombed at Centennial Park. The Prowler's time capsule won't be opened until 2048. Instead of being lowered into an underground vault like the Belvedere, the Prowler was driven into an above-ground mausoleum, which was then sealed shut and partly covered with dirt.
instead of being wrapped in plastic sheeting like the Belvedere, the Prowler was enclosed in a seamless plastic "box," specially manufactured here in Tulsa for the time capsule. Officials drained the oil and other fluids, replacing them with synthetics that won't degrade, officials said. And the vault itself was filled with an inert gas to keep the exterior in good shape.
BAck then, there's the cold war. and they believe the any structure on the surface of will all be destroyed. So they have the projection the this will serve to educate the new beings about the lost civilization of 1957. Putting it in a museum was never a choice back then, around 12 years after wwII.
greed set in and trust me if you would have been here. they charged for everything screwed everyone around. and then they dug it up......major slap in the face .......they deserved it!
They did have the knowledge to make a concrete vault waterproof and sealed in 1957 but maybe not those who buried the car. Some concrete lid is not going to keep the water out for 50 years. They should have known better. And had this car never been buried it would have rusted away anyway since that model was notorious for its rust.
If it would have been parked in a warehouse (or even a barn)it would be perfect today. There are many cars that had just that done and are here today.
i came from holland to see this car in tulsa (ok) i was disapointed of the condition of the car but i saw that they closed the tomb with concreet plates.. the tomb was like a swimming pool. it was full of water.
for the people that don`t know what this is they puth this car under the ground in 1957 and 50 years later they unvieling it.. with no succes of the car look at mine video`s greetz don carrera
The late '50's Chrysler products were made of recycled metal and had poor workmanship, so they were notorious for rust. Water in the vault is not a good sign...
You can't trust the government to do anything right (especially local). Yes, car restoration and preservation was a new thing in 57', but they could have at least consulted the likes of the Henry Ford Museum or Bill Harrah among others who already had experience with this stuff even in 57'. Up until today the worst case fear was going to be rust out due to the full cans of gas in the trunk. Who would have thought they didn't water proof the vault!
I owned a 57 Belvedere. It had a record player in the dash that played 45' RPM records. If you slid it out it played 33 1/3'RPM's. It handled like crap and got about 6 miles to the gallon. The time capsule was filled with 3 feet of water that they said looked like chocolate milk! Not good. Time capsules aren't much good if what you put in them comes out trashed.
I have looked it up, many times in fact. Plymouth made the Belvedere model along with the Fury, and Savoy. All were essentially the same car, they just gave different trim levels their own name back then as the car makers only made just a few different cars. Not like today where they make 15 different models in five different trim levels, all with multi-million dollar production costs.
to be honest the car would probally be in better condition now if it wasnt buried. but just well looked after. .lol it was meant to be retreived this year. its a time capsule, buried 50 years ago (1957). its not supposed to be preserved forever. wasn't their a race riot in Tulsa during the
It was not race riot it was a race massacre! We have mass graves in Tulsa same as they do in Auchwitz!! Makes me proud o be an American. How bout you?
I'm from Tulsa...It was just this crazy idea (crazy ass Okies looking for something to do)....and now, today someone wins the car, who's name is written in some time capsule or something...if they're not dead!
Tulsa was the site of one of the worst race riots in U.S. history. From the evening of May 31st, to the afternoon of June 1, 1921, more Americans killed fellow Americans in the Tulsa riot than probably anytime since the Civil War.
if you freakin idiots lived in tulsa you would know the full story, it has many things inside the car that is from 1957, a time capsule is for that reason, to see change over a period of time
It was the biggest mistake they made burying it underground. This was bound to happen. If they really wanted to preserve it, they should have put it in a crypt like vault at street level and the results would have been much different.
This is the opening of a vault that a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere was sealed in 50 years ago. It was buried under the court house lawn in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There is a lot more information at buriedcar dot com
This is a video of crews removing the third section of the lid of the vault. Originally the sections were set in place then the gaps and edges were cemented. There didn't appear to be a seal under the edges of the lid panels. The cement did not do a good job of keeping out 50 years worth of water.
