  • /watch?v=QkvDwSNZhAk

  • it works while towing a trailer behind a bicycle too =]

  • wow thanks all the other videos I couldn't understand them but you spoke clearly and excellent good job

  • Sorry but leaning and pushing on parts of the motorbike don't initiate a turn in any way shape or form. At speed, counter steering is the only way to initiate the lean necessary to create the centripetal force required to turn. Good video, but you're still falling victim to the same myths about steering that most riders do. Steer to the left, bike leans right. That's it. Throwing your body around and pushing down on the handle bars is not what turns your bike.

  • pity the bike wasnt leaking petrol ,an suddenly burst into flames wie him running around the car park screaming ,about his counter steering problems

  • very helpful video. learned this in rider's class, but luckily haven't had to use it. please continue making videos like this

  • Great video..!!!

  • good grief your a fuking boring bastard ,who asked you to do this by the

way ,mmmm,,?,,what no one ,wellwhat the fuk are you doing it for you total fud ,

oh god rather crash ,than keep anything youi said in my head ,you married ,must be one sorry bored outa her box woman

  • @MrCharcharchar lol really??...don't click on the video then. who ask anybody to post any videos on youtube? most of vids on youtube are random nonsense that nobody gives a crap about. but if you read most of the comments a lot of people actually appreciate this vid including me. smh

  • @siksauce yes really random nonsense is preferable to monotomy of that cunts voice i mean does it not make you want to slash your wrists ,dont be such a dullard an watch something mental ,

  • how is it posisble to drag the most simple law of physics into an 8 minute of my life wasting video. good grammer but my god how thick are your watchers?

  • best freakin countersteering video EVER... this actually made sense and i feel comfortable attempting it now... thank you so much!!!

  • WOW! dude thank you SO SO MUCH.... First person that explained it properly

  • this is the first video i've seen that actually EXPLAINS the whole process!

  • Well Done Sir

    Thank you

  • this dudes serious lol.

  • Such an amazing description

  • Best explanation from a simple man. Got all these videos from trainers that couldn't explain this better. Good job!

  • Do you use countersteering for every coner at speed over 15 mph or it's just an emergency technique?

  • @siskajan Countersteering happen anturally with noticing it but to be able to turn more of you have gone to fast you must understand coiuntersteer to be able to use it when needed. p.s he says pushdown you shoudl pushforward as pushing down doesnt have the same effect as pushing the bars forward it a very smooth mostion and need very little imput if you ride a sort bike you'll find being more agressive with your countersteerign i need as sportsbikes take more input to ride with your body.

  • this is the best explanation of CS!

  • Thanks, this helped me a great deal as a new rider.

  • such a good explanation im favoriting it

  • @Blackjak96 - Completely agree with you. I have had so much trouble understanding this stuff until I found this video. Up til now I've been gritting my teeth through slow leans and hoping I miss potholes on my vtx1800, today I was dancing around them after watching this video. Excellent.

  • Great video! Clear, concise explanations and driving examples.

  • Thank you. I never realized how bad people were at describing something until I tried to learn to counter steer. You described it perfect.

  • this is best explanation of what is the countersteering! Cheers man!

  • thank you soooo muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:D

  • @Howler76 if your a beginner stay away from freeways lol, i have a 250 rebel and its a great bike for learning, after a year or so (for me) you can move up to a 650cc-750 i would recommend. i have a vstar 650 coming off a rebel so

  • Thank you so much ! Fantastic video and well explained.. By teaching me this you will probably save me form some future accident... I am eternally great-full.

  • Finally I get it ...thanks mate

  • Great video and very informative, although I know this in a car, I can now apply you technique to swerve around the horrible drivers on my college campus that have almost hit me on my GoPed multiple times.

  • @Howler76 Get the Shadow and just be responsible with it. Choppers are easy to ride , you be fine with bigger bike. My brother in law got vstar 250 and the bike is slow as hell , after few months you would hate it.

  • you are wrong ,don't listen to this guy he's gonna get you killed

  • EXCELLENT video. Thanks for putting it in words I could understand. I'm still lost as to WHY it works, but you made me see HOW it works. Thank you!

  • The best video I've seen yet on this subject, thanks for this!

  • FINALLY! A video on countersteering that I understand! Thanks so much mevd!

  • Awesome video. Thanks for the simple explanation.

  • I think in around 3:00 you describe steering a bit wrong. Pushing DOWN on the handlebars from the TOP doesn't do much. Steering is most efficient when pushing parallel/HORIZONTAL of where you want the handlebars turned (right or left). At low speeds it just doesn't require much CntrSteering so only a SMALL movement of the handlebars. I'm a girl and can steer my 600cc through city traffic with 1 finger on each side!

  • sorry so in like dumb peoples terms, (me) you push down on the left handle to go right and vice versa?

  • Comment removed

  • @woody4114 just think simple ;) wanna tun left ---> push left!

Don't get confused with Push and Pull! Pulling left makes it go right. Pulling is just more difficult and since we all have two hands, why not do pushing only :)

Counter steering forces the bike out of balance which causes it to fall/lean into the direction you wanna go. Left turn: Push left side, tire goes to the right, bike balances out to the left. Et Voila, a left turn :)

  • @aklinpilgri thankyou very much for the advice i think i understand it now :P thanks again :)

  • thanks for the video, what kind of bike do you have?

  • its due to do the gyroscopic rigidity of the wheels that will carry you straight forward in addition to the momentum

  • what happens if you lean and counter steer at the same time?

  • Great explanation of countersteering!

  • Very, very good video. You're right, we countersteer all of the time without really thinking about it.

  • First off, thank you for the video. Everything you said makes a lot of sense! Now that I think about it I believe as a kid I used to do the same thing on bicycles while going pretty fast. I don't ride yet and I'm fixing to get my first bike so I've been trying to watch a lot of educational videos to get me mentally prepared. Until I try the technique I don't think I'll completely know how to do it but it seems like the natural thing your body would want to do.

  • So you're pretty much just trying to shift your weight?

  • The odd thing with counter-steering, is that I find it intuitive rather than counter-intuitive. Rather than thinking of it as pushing down on the handlebar, I tend to think of it as relaxing my body from from the shoulders, almost more "fluid-like" rather than being stiff. Still, however someone thinks of it in their head, its all the same thing at the end of the day and its the effective result which really matters.

  • sounds like a black person. lloll

  • how do i know your black just from your voice.

  • Are you an instructor? coz you have explained swerving technique very clearly and I'm thinking i might not need a motorcyle course anymore after watching this video coz i think this is the hardest part in riding a motorcyle and i think i could perform swerving just with a lot of practice on my own

  • @jackrussellforsale the MSF course is invaluable!

  • @mbcyclery

Guess what? i just finished MSF course for beginners done by Honda riding school here in the philippines and they did NOT teach counter steering, much less swerving at all. Duh!

  • @jackrussellforsale that seems odd. was it the Basic Rider Course? i wonder why it is different then the one taught in the US... there is no such thing as too much practice on motorcycles.

  • looks like a zzr

  • Some great books are "Performance Handling Techniques"

and any Kieth Code book in his "Twist of the Wrist" series.

I ride a Ninja ZX10R and do track days as well as street riding. I know plenty of fast Track Day riders who don't even ride on the street because it's "too dangerous". -They are correct.

Riding Motorcycles is a multi dimensional undertaking. You don't drive a motorcycle- you ride it. To ride it properly, you must understand all factors involved. Even good riders wreck.

  • Riding motorcycles is a fool's game. There are too many factors, out of your control with which you must contend.

To be a proper motorcycle enthusiast, you must first be a safety enthusiast. This means you must READ!!!!! STUDY!!!!!! about how to be a better motorcyclist.

The day you know everything about riding bikes is the day you die. This usually comes in about 1 year on the bike. You start getting confident and you push yourself into a situation you can't get out of.

  • My advice to someone about to purchase a bike for the first time? -Don't. Get a car. You will wreck. -Just a fact and there is no argument.

    2 types of riders:

Ones who HAVE wrecked and ones who WILL wreck. If you can now justify why you need to wreck- then you can justify why you need a bike.

Do you know how bad it hurts to wreck? A simple low speed (30mph) "Get off" typically makes you bedridden for 2-3 weeks. If you don't have a helmet on it can render you a vegetable.

  • Good verbal lesson. There are 100 different things to know about turning a motorcycle. This one was very well explained.

  • What bike are you using?

  • but i have 1 question when u steer to the right and then go to the left to counter steer do also go with your body to the left ? since my beloved cagiva mito is in the garage :( i'll test it with my scooter >.> oh yeah does it even work with a racer? :P

    Greetings

  • finally i found a video with a commentary i fully understand, thank you

i have bin riding my motorcycle since 5 months now

i understanded it because u where using your hands to show how it goes with the momentum i know about the momentum because when ur riding really fast and let ur steering wheel go u will go in a nice straight line

  • Excellent explanation,

  • Outstanding presentation!

  • mevd, excellent stuff. Books are okay, but nothing beats a videolog.

Just a tip - you should avoid saying "push down" when you're talking about countersteering (about 3:05 into the video). The push is directly forward, straight ahead. There is a tendency to push down, but this is no better than leaning, which you're already doing. To get the mulitplying "servo" effect of the countersteer, the push has to be normal to the inboard bar, at 3:00 (looking at the end of the bar).

  • Cool, good vid. They covered this in Ridersedege with emphasis on the practicality of learning the maneuvers.

  • "Naturally falls to the left"

GREAT explanation. ive always had a hard time with countersteering until recently

  • @Howler76, that's a good question. Although I tend to promote the 250cc for first time riders, I believe that as long as you're careful and learn how to properly use the power of the 600cc, you shouldn't have much trouble and would most likely be more satisfied with the bigger engine. Additionally, I agree that the rebel may not be the best choice for freeway riding.

  • I just Wasted 8 Minutes of my life.....

Any Biker can do that..... huh..!

  • Excellent video and explanation. All riders should get this training.

  • People you perform this manuever quite often when on a bicycle ya know the 1 you peddle

  • This is a really well informed video. It's the same as all the others but you're explaining the concept then showing the "proof" per say. Very brilliant bro :)

  • Brilliant demo. =3

    Really thorough! XD Little worried about trying it at speed, I must admit, but, I'm sure that'll die down soon enough. ^^;

So, the counter steering is only to get the bike to lean?

You don't hold the counter-steer through the entire turn?

  • This is by far the best video on counter steering on the net!

you explain it so well. need to be a uni lecturer! its the only one that i got.

good on ya man! very good job!

  • Great vid, man

  • I feel like this is the best counter steering video on you tube. Everything else has confused me. Thank you

  • So, in order to counter-steer, I floor it! Got it!

  • lol thats my bike :)

  • YES I GET IT! Youre brilliant man!

  • this is this best explanation i have seen of this! this explained a ton to me, thanks man!

  • Great vid but I have a question. I cycle quite often and I'm abit aggressive when going through town and busy roads. This 'notion' of countersteering seems a natural tendancy or a 'no brainer'. Do people actually struugle with practicing this rather than understanding the physics behind it??

I'm thinking about doing my bike test. Is it very similar, in terms of control, to normal cycling? I can imagine the science behind it is. Drop me a message if you want to give some advise.

  • that was the best video description ive seen thus far. good job man

  • i would just like to comment that you don't necessairly push down, you can pull back or forward depending on which handle you're using and which way you're turning.

  • Excellent instructor... keep up the good work!

  • For a right turn, think of it as if you could pick up the forks and move them to the left a little so you can lean and weight the bike to the right, turning right.

  • Best explanition of countersteering I've seen so far. This also works at low speed...

  • Very well explained. Thank You.

  • would your turn be improved if tou also moved your body when counterstering ? cheers, great vid.

  • This video helped me out alot! Thanks man.

  • Don't press DOWN, push forward.

  • im confused, it looked like you turned it rgiht and went right, i didnt see you counterstering?

  • @LSintegraty, Countersteering is quite subtle. I happens very quickly and is almost unnoticeable. If you focus on the movement of the handlebars as I initiate the turn, you'll notice a slight movement of the wheel in the opposite direction.

  • so countersteering is pretty much tricking the bike into moving fast then using its natural tendency to remain upright to get back into place. so its really just you move it to the other way then getting back to the regular position

  • Yeah, I've done this. But, all the other guys explaining it made me so confused, thanks for this video.

  • You're a very articulate dude. It's good to technically break down the things we naturally do intuitively so that we can be even more aware and ready, and increase the depth of our understanding of it.

  • thank you man you explained that very well!

  • Thank you for your demo. I think you just may have saved my life! (no joke!)

  • yea.. this truly is the best counter-steering video ive seen. you actually give a very very good explanation, unlike the other videos. the thing i liked about this video is you actually explain the second part of counter-steering, making sure you turn the wheel back to the direction you are going after you lean. Ive tested this out with my bicycle when i first was learning about motorcycles. the other videos think that we can assume to do that, but there are a lot of n000bs on here.

  • Comment removed

  • Yep, I agree. A clean clear explanation of countersteering finally!!! Thanks lots!!!

  • Awesome video. Thanks man

  • Great Video...clear and well explained

  • Loved the video and instructions w/o all the jokes and BS from others out there that even they can do it they can't explain it as well as you. Great job.

  • why does dude sound like Ice-T?

  • @myaddidas06

    cause hes a g

  • @seowan "cause hes a g" ????? Really? Where the fuck do you live that is okay to say shit like that?

  • how long have you been riding?

  • @yuyu553, At this point I've been riding for 3 years. When this video was created, I had been riding for a little less than 1 year.

  • I love this video, I'm starting to understand now just what it means. Thank You!

  • @MsJennyEvans this site is bullshit....NOBODY GO HERE. a bunch of spam.

  • this is allmost like the trailer park swerve ,bubba n sis have mastered it in ashland city tn

  • Mevd, man you do a great job with your explanations! To represent all of us newbies, let me just say thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

  • i dunno all i see is him stearing in the direction he wants, nothing ;counter; about it.

  • best countersteer video ive seen! thanks

  • Nice video... Nicely Explained....

  • best Countersteering vido i have seen so far very good

  • You have explained this clearer then any other video i've seen thanks

  • good demonstration

  • I watched 7 videos so far and this explained it the best!

  • thanks..very useful

  • can u still turn the regular way?

  • @motorcyclelover27, turning the handlebars alone is sufficient at very low speeds. At speeds above 10-15mph, you must countersteer. Otherwise it will be quite difficult to complete the turn. If you have the opportunity, you should try it on any 2-wheeled vehicle (ie motorcycle, moped, scooter, bicycle, etc)

  • @mevd oh ok thank u

  • @mevd this might be a stupid question since I've never been on a bike. when you've already initiated the turn by countersteering, do you just straighten the bar out to go back straight? in other words countersteering in the other direction to straighten out?

  • @yuyu553 not a stupid question at all. The simple answer is yes. The bike will return to a straight path when you straighten the wheel. Yet, it is a bit more complex than that. As metioned in the video, the motorcycle (or scooter, bicycle, etc) that is travelling forward remains upright without any efforts on the part of the rider and resists leaning or turning.

  • @mevd so basically, you only countersteer to initiate the turn. you then ride the angle as you would normally do a bike. So if I'm trying to turn left, I'm going to do what you just showed me, press left (wheel is actually turning right for a split second) and then readjust to match the turn, and then straighten out when I'm done completing my turn? I'm thinking about getting a ninja250 heard that was a good starter, and I like how it looks. what do you think? stupid? all my friends say I'm craz

  • This is demonstrated by the many videos that show the rider falling from the bike and the bike continues to travel forward and and remains upright until it crashes. In other words, leaning and turning the bike is an active process that requires the rider to apply force to the handle bars (& change body position). Conversely, straightning the wheel is a passive process that occurs naturally and only requires the rider to control the speed with which the wheel straightens.

  • @yuyu553 Look up transitions. A motorcycle and a bicycle do very different things, becuase of the heavier rotating weight and becuase of the vehicle weight and speed, inertia act very heavily on the motorcycle. I have ridden bicycles for 25 years, and find motorcycles are intimidating beyond small bikes and mopeds. Not for the size or speed, but the challenge for a skinny guy to learn different maneuvering techniques. A bicycle requires much less countersteer.

  • fantastic video mevd, thanks alot!

  • like that jacket

  • So I completely understand this counter steering business, and I know it's essential when avoiding objects in the road. But I never notice that I do it when I'm riding down roads and such. It seems like this is something that's really subconscious that your body does naturally to try to counterbalance the leans and stuff, am I right or wrong? Because I never notice too much that I'm aware I'm pushing up right when I want to turn right, etc.

  • Great explanation, you should be a physics teacher one day! (no sarcasm intended)

  • shame we can not see the handle bars only the mirrors.

  • Your video is Fantastic!

  • Thank you very much!

  • hello, do they teach this at the MSF approved course? thanks.

  • Yes, they do. Although they do not spend much time teaching the technique, you are required to properly perform a swerve during the final test at MSF.

  • you really describes it the best you have my sub. everyone one else made it really complicated you explained it perfect. good job.

  • Thank you!, by far the best explanation on countersteering ive heard

  • nice vid man! hell of a lot better than others!!!

  • Nice vid, thanks for putting it in words that people and myself can understand. I've done it and never noticed till now.

  • Fantastic explaination. You must teach physics or something...you had the vector analysis right on. Thanks!

  • Thanks mevd, you've explained this technique very well in your video.

As you've said, it's something that I've already been doing (as part of my motorcycle practical exam), however I didn't quite understand the dynamics behind it. Thanks for explaining!

  • Thanks for the video. Explained perfectly and with the utmost clarity. You've helped a noob rider immensely! =3

  • awesome video. got some valuable info right there.

  • by obstacle do you mean a car doing the speed limit?

  • Sure, or a stopped vehicle, pothole, object in the road, etc . . .

  • @ecookman rofl mevd didnt get it..

  • @TheThingamajig

    lol i know

  • I'm blown away at how eloquent and thorough you are in your instructions and descriptions. Great video.

  • this is the only video ive seen where counter steering is actually explained. i understand now thanks . 5*****

  • great video.. i learn better by seeing someone doing something rather than being told.. ty for the video

  • Tried this at the weekend, can't beleive i have been riding for well over a year and didn;t know this. it worked beautifully and almost becomes addictive! good vid and explanation. ride safe everyone!

  • Good vid, please make more.

  • Great video and superb explanation. Thank you.

  • if it work of high speed like 120kilometers per hour?

  • @Razzzordback there is no other way to turn the bike at speed over ~20kph, so yes it will work, and you are doing it already, you just don't know it. Again there is no other way to make bike turn

  • Thanks mevd!! of other videos, your explanation was the best and made me understand.

  • its like when making a slalom and using the lean speed of one corner to lean faster for the next corner. its as easy as that and it comes natural, its not science

  • I'm currenly taking some training and yesterday it was about counter steering, I do know why it happens and what it does, but the trainer wants me to complete a complete almost U-turn thats about 10 meters wide in a parking lot using only counter steering.. Personally I think its impossible (as a newbie) coz I need to be at low speed, and he's giving me such a hard time for not being able to do that ! any thoughts please?

  • It's possible. The most important part of completing the u-turn is to turn your head around to see where you want the bike to go. Takes some practice, but you'll get it.

  • thankyou, tomorrow's my next class i'll do my best

  • the best video on countersteering i have seen

  • Does this technique work with a small motorcycle like 100c (with narrower tyres)?

  • Yes, it sure does. This technique is used even on a bicycle.

  • Thank you. I come back to answer my own question too. I just tried it and lost balance and was about to fall. I'm not sure whether it (Honda Wave s100) isn't designed for leaning turn or the tyres are too narrow.

  • You need to build enough speed. If you're going too slow you won't be able to countersteer.

  • Awesome vid!

  • this is the best possible explanation of counter steering on entire youtube.....now after watching this it seems it's basic instinct that everyone does....other videos just made it such complicated thing and as if something that had to be learnt from scratch....seriously....kudos !!

  • That is the countersteering as much as I'm Barack Obama.

  • Thank you I get it FINALLY been watching so many videos trying to understand =)

  • Great explanation.... thanks for your time and patience to share your knowledge.... Peace, GK

  • hey thanks for your demenstration, i see now on doing turns, i'm gonna get a kawasaki ninja 650r its going to be my first bike and first motorbike ride, thanks for that useful tip dude.

  • I was always blurry on C/I steering before, but as explained , Its something i have done so many time and just not known!

    Cheers bud!

  • thanks! all the other counter steering videos aren't as clear

  • finally the best video of countersteering on youtube. or the best explanation!!!!!!

    i finally got it

  • I finally understand it completely; the way that a different video explained it made it sound like the counter-steer was done throughout the corner. This made no sense to me at all since I have a scientific background.

Finally makes complete sense; thank you.
