Sorry but leaning and pushing on parts of the motorbike don't initiate a turn in any way shape or form. At speed, counter steering is the only way to initiate the lean necessary to create the centripetal force required to turn. Good video, but you're still falling victim to the same myths about steering that most riders do. Steer to the left, bike leans right. That's it. Throwing your body around and pushing down on the handle bars is not what turns your bike.
@MrCharcharchar lol really??...don't click on the video then. who ask anybody to post any videos on youtube? most of vids on youtube are random nonsense that nobody gives a crap about. but if you read most of the comments a lot of people actually appreciate this vid including me. smh

@siskajan Countersteering happen anturally with noticing it but to be able to turn more of you have gone to fast you must understand coiuntersteer to be able to use it when needed. p.s he says pushdown you shoudl pushforward as pushing down doesnt have the same effect as pushing the bars forward it a very smooth mostion and need very little imput if you ride a sort bike you'll find being more agressive with your countersteerign i need as sportsbikes take more input to ride with your body.

Great video and very informative, although I know this in a car, I can now apply you technique to swerve around the horrible drivers on my college campus that have almost hit me on my GoPed multiple times.
@Howler76 Get the Shadow and just be responsible with it. Choppers are easy to ride , you be fine with bigger bike. My brother in law got vstar 250 and the bike is slow as hell , after few months you would hate it.
I think in around 3:00 you describe steering a bit wrong. Pushing DOWN on the handlebars from the TOP doesn't do much. Steering is most efficient when pushing parallel/HORIZONTAL of where you want the handlebars turned (right or left). At low speeds it just doesn't require much CntrSteering so only a SMALL movement of the handlebars. I'm a girl and can steer my 600cc through city traffic with 1 finger on each side!
@woody4114 just think simple ;) wanna tun left ---> push left!
Don't get confused with Push and Pull! Pulling left makes it go right. Pulling is just more difficult and since we all have two hands, why not do pushing only :)
Counter steering forces the bike out of balance which causes it to fall/lean into the direction you wanna go. Left turn: Push left side, tire goes to the right, bike balances out to the left. Et Voila, a left turn :)
First off, thank you for the video. Everything you said makes a lot of sense! Now that I think about it I believe as a kid I used to do the same thing on bicycles while going pretty fast. I don't ride yet and I'm fixing to get my first bike so I've been trying to watch a lot of educational videos to get me mentally prepared. Until I try the technique I don't think I'll completely know how to do it but it seems like the natural thing your body would want to do.
The odd thing with counter-steering, is that I find it intuitive rather than counter-intuitive. Rather than thinking of it as pushing down on the handlebar, I tend to think of it as relaxing my body from from the shoulders, almost more "fluid-like" rather than being stiff. Still, however someone thinks of it in their head, its all the same thing at the end of the day and its the effective result which really matters.
Are you an instructor? coz you have explained swerving technique very clearly and I'm thinking i might not need a motorcyle course anymore after watching this video coz i think this is the hardest part in riding a motorcyle and i think i could perform swerving just with a lot of practice on my own
Guess what? i just finished MSF course for beginners done by Honda riding school here in the philippines and they did NOT teach counter steering, much less swerving at all. Duh!
@jackrussellforsale that seems odd. was it the Basic Rider Course? i wonder why it is different then the one taught in the US... there is no such thing as too much practice on motorcycles.
Some great books are "Performance Handling Techniques"
and any Kieth Code book in his "Twist of the Wrist" series.
I ride a Ninja ZX10R and do track days as well as street riding. I know plenty of fast Track Day riders who don't even ride on the street because it's "too dangerous". -They are correct.
Riding Motorcycles is a multi dimensional undertaking. You don't drive a motorcycle- you ride it. To ride it properly, you must understand all factors involved. Even good riders wreck.

2 types of riders:
Ones who HAVE wrecked and ones who WILL wreck. If you can now justify why you need to wreck- then you can justify why you need a bike.
Do you know how bad it hurts to wreck? A simple low speed (30mph) "Get off" typically makes you bedridden for 2-3 weeks. If you don't have a helmet on it can render you a vegetable.
but i have 1 question when u steer to the right and then go to the left to counter steer do also go with your body to the left ? since my beloved cagiva mito is in the garage :( i'll test it with my scooter >.> oh yeah does it even work with a racer? :P
finally i found a video with a commentary i fully understand, thank you
i have bin riding my motorcycle since 5 months now
i understanded it because u where using your hands to show how it goes with the momentum i know about the momentum because when ur riding really fast and let ur steering wheel go u will go in a nice straight line
mevd, excellent stuff. Books are okay, but nothing beats a videolog.
Just a tip - you should avoid saying "push down" when you're talking about countersteering (about 3:05 into the video). The push is directly forward, straight ahead. There is a tendency to push down, but this is no better than leaning, which you're already doing. To get the mulitplying "servo" effect of the countersteer, the push has to be normal to the inboard bar, at 3:00 (looking at the end of the bar).
@Howler76, that's a good question. Although I tend to promote the 250cc for first time riders, I believe that as long as you're careful and learn how to properly use the power of the 600cc, you shouldn't have much trouble and would most likely be more satisfied with the bigger engine. Additionally, I agree that the rebel may not be the best choice for freeway riding.
This is a really well informed video. It's the same as all the others but you're explaining the concept then showing the "proof" per say. Very brilliant bro :)
Great vid but I have a question. I cycle quite often and I'm abit aggressive when going through town and busy roads. This 'notion' of countersteering seems a natural tendancy or a 'no brainer'. Do people actually struugle with practicing this rather than understanding the physics behind it??
I'm thinking about doing my bike test. Is it very similar, in terms of control, to normal cycling? I can imagine the science behind it is. Drop me a message if you want to give some advise.
i would just like to comment that you don't necessairly push down, you can pull back or forward depending on which handle you're using and which way you're turning.
For a right turn, think of it as if you could pick up the forks and move them to the left a little so you can lean and weight the bike to the right, turning right.
@LSintegraty, Countersteering is quite subtle. I happens very quickly and is almost unnoticeable. If you focus on the movement of the handlebars as I initiate the turn, you'll notice a slight movement of the wheel in the opposite direction.
so countersteering is pretty much tricking the bike into moving fast then using its natural tendency to remain upright to get back into place. so its really just you move it to the other way then getting back to the regular position
You're a very articulate dude. It's good to technically break down the things we naturally do intuitively so that we can be even more aware and ready, and increase the depth of our understanding of it.
yea.. this truly is the best counter-steering video ive seen. you actually give a very very good explanation, unlike the other videos. the thing i liked about this video is you actually explain the second part of counter-steering, making sure you turn the wheel back to the direction you are going after you lean. Ive tested this out with my bicycle when i first was learning about motorcycles. the other videos think that we can assume to do that, but there are a lot of n000bs on here.
Loved the video and instructions w/o all the jokes and BS from others out there that even they can do it they can't explain it as well as you. Great job.
@motorcyclelover27, turning the handlebars alone is sufficient at very low speeds. At speeds above 10-15mph, you must countersteer. Otherwise it will be quite difficult to complete the turn. If you have the opportunity, you should try it on any 2-wheeled vehicle (ie motorcycle, moped, scooter, bicycle, etc)
@mevd this might be a stupid question since I've never been on a bike. when you've already initiated the turn by countersteering, do you just straighten the bar out to go back straight? in other words countersteering in the other direction to straighten out?
@yuyu553 not a stupid question at all. The simple answer is yes. The bike will return to a straight path when you straighten the wheel. Yet, it is a bit more complex than that. As metioned in the video, the motorcycle (or scooter, bicycle, etc) that is travelling forward remains upright without any efforts on the part of the rider and resists leaning or turning.
@mevd so basically, you only countersteer to initiate the turn. you then ride the angle as you would normally do a bike. So if I'm trying to turn left, I'm going to do what you just showed me, press left (wheel is actually turning right for a split second) and then readjust to match the turn, and then straighten out when I'm done completing my turn? I'm thinking about getting a ninja250 heard that was a good starter, and I like how it looks. what do you think? stupid? all my friends say I'm craz
This is demonstrated by the many videos that show the rider falling from the bike and the bike continues to travel forward and and remains upright until it crashes. In other words, leaning and turning the bike is an active process that requires the rider to apply force to the handle bars (& change body position). Conversely, straightning the wheel is a passive process that occurs naturally and only requires the rider to control the speed with which the wheel straightens.
@yuyu553 Look up transitions. A motorcycle and a bicycle do very different things, becuase of the heavier rotating weight and becuase of the vehicle weight and speed, inertia act very heavily on the motorcycle. I have ridden bicycles for 25 years, and find motorcycles are intimidating beyond small bikes and mopeds. Not for the size or speed, but the challenge for a skinny guy to learn different maneuvering techniques. A bicycle requires much less countersteer.
So I completely understand this counter steering business, and I know it's essential when avoiding objects in the road. But I never notice that I do it when I'm riding down roads and such. It seems like this is something that's really subconscious that your body does naturally to try to counterbalance the leans and stuff, am I right or wrong? Because I never notice too much that I'm aware I'm pushing up right when I want to turn right, etc.
Yes, they do. Although they do not spend much time teaching the technique, you are required to properly perform a swerve during the final test at MSF.
Thanks mevd, you've explained this technique very well in your video.
As you've said, it's something that I've already been doing (as part of my motorcycle practical exam), however I didn't quite understand the dynamics behind it. Thanks for explaining!
Tried this at the weekend, can't beleive i have been riding for well over a year and didn;t know this. it worked beautifully and almost becomes addictive! good vid and explanation. ride safe everyone!
@Razzzordback there is no other way to turn the bike at speed over ~20kph, so yes it will work, and you are doing it already, you just don't know it. Again there is no other way to make bike turn
its like when making a slalom and using the lean speed of one corner to lean faster for the next corner. its as easy as that and it comes natural, its not science
I'm currenly taking some training and yesterday it was about counter steering, I do know why it happens and what it does, but the trainer wants me to complete a complete almost U-turn thats about 10 meters wide in a parking lot using only counter steering.. Personally I think its impossible (as a newbie) coz I need to be at low speed, and he's giving me such a hard time for not being able to do that ! any thoughts please?
It's possible. The most important part of completing the u-turn is to turn your head around to see where you want the bike to go. Takes some practice, but you'll get it.
Thank you. I come back to answer my own question too. I just tried it and lost balance and was about to fall. I'm not sure whether it (Honda Wave s100) isn't designed for leaning turn or the tyres are too narrow.
this is the best possible explanation of counter steering on entire youtube.....now after watching this it seems it's basic instinct that everyone does....other videos just made it such complicated thing and as if something that had to be learnt from scratch....seriously....kudos !!
hey thanks for your demenstration, i see now on doing turns, i'm gonna get a kawasaki ninja 650r its going to be my first bike and first motorbike ride, thanks for that useful tip dude.
I finally understand it completely; the way that a different video explained it made it sound like the counter-steer was done throughout the corner. This made no sense to me at all since I have a scientific background.

@LSintegraty, Countersteering is quite subtle. I happens very quickly and is almost unnoticeable. If you focus on the movement of the handlebars as I initiate the turn, you'll notice a slight movement of the wheel in the opposite direction.
mevd 1 year ago
so countersteering is pretty much tricking the bike into moving fast then using its natural tendency to remain upright to get back into place. so its really just you move it to the other way then getting back to the regular position
nowellbuster22 1 year ago
Yeah, I've done this. But, all the other guys explaining it made me so confused, thanks for this video.

You're a very articulate dude. It's good to technically break down the things we naturally do intuitively so that we can be even more aware and ready, and increase the depth of our understanding of it.

Thank you for your demo. I think you just may have saved my life! (no joke!)
scharleygrl 1 year ago
yea.. this truly is the best counter-steering video ive seen. you actually give a very very good explanation, unlike the other videos. the thing i liked about this video is you actually explain the second part of counter-steering, making sure you turn the wheel back to the direction you are going after you lean. Ive tested this out with my bicycle when i first was learning about motorcycles. the other videos think that we can assume to do that, but there are a lot of n000bs on here.

can u still turn the regular way?
motorcyclelover27 1 year ago
@motorcyclelover27, turning the handlebars alone is sufficient at very low speeds. At speeds above 10-15mph, you must countersteer. Otherwise it will be quite difficult to complete the turn. If you have the opportunity, you should try it on any 2-wheeled vehicle (ie motorcycle, moped, scooter, bicycle, etc)
mevd 1 year ago
@mevd oh ok thank u
motorcyclelover27 1 year ago
@mevd this might be a stupid question since I've never been on a bike. when you've already initiated the turn by countersteering, do you just straighten the bar out to go back straight? in other words countersteering in the other direction to straighten out?
yuyu553 1 year ago
@yuyu553 not a stupid question at all. The simple answer is yes. The bike will return to a straight path when you straighten the wheel. Yet, it is a bit more complex than that. As metioned in the video, the motorcycle (or scooter, bicycle, etc) that is travelling forward remains upright without any efforts on the part of the rider and resists leaning or turning.
mevd 1 year ago
@mevd so basically, you only countersteer to initiate the turn. you then ride the angle as you would normally do a bike. So if I'm trying to turn left, I'm going to do what you just showed me, press left (wheel is actually turning right for a split second) and then readjust to match the turn, and then straighten out when I'm done completing my turn? I'm thinking about getting a ninja250 heard that was a good starter, and I like how it looks. what do you think? stupid? all my friends say I'm craz
yuyu553 1 year ago
This is demonstrated by the many videos that show the rider falling from the bike and the bike continues to travel forward and and remains upright until it crashes. In other words, leaning and turning the bike is an active process that requires the rider to apply force to the handle bars (& change body position). Conversely, straightning the wheel is a passive process that occurs naturally and only requires the rider to control the speed with which the wheel straightens.
mevd 1 year ago
@yuyu553 Look up transitions. A motorcycle and a bicycle do very different things, becuase of the heavier rotating weight and becuase of the vehicle weight and speed, inertia act very heavily on the motorcycle. I have ridden bicycles for 25 years, and find motorcycles are intimidating beyond small bikes and mopeds. Not for the size or speed, but the challenge for a skinny guy to learn different maneuvering techniques. A bicycle requires much less countersteer.

Bergieberg28 1 year ago
So I completely understand this counter steering business, and I know it's essential when avoiding objects in the road. But I never notice that I do it when I'm riding down roads and such. It seems like this is something that's really subconscious that your body does naturally to try to counterbalance the leans and stuff, am I right or wrong? Because I never notice too much that I'm aware I'm pushing up right when I want to turn right, etc.

Yes, they do. Although they do not spend much time teaching the technique, you are required to properly perform a swerve during the final test at MSF.

if it work of high speed like 120kilometers per hour?
Razzzordback 2 years ago
@Razzzordback there is no other way to turn the bike at speed over ~20kph, so yes it will work, and you are doing it already, you just don't know it. Again there is no other way to make bike turn

its like when making a slalom and using the lean speed of one corner to lean faster for the next corner. its as easy as that and it comes natural, its not science
Sozos9038 2 years ago
I'm currenly taking some training and yesterday it was about counter steering, I do know why it happens and what it does, but the trainer wants me to complete a complete almost U-turn thats about 10 meters wide in a parking lot using only counter steering.. Personally I think its impossible (as a newbie) coz I need to be at low speed, and he's giving me such a hard time for not being able to do that ! any thoughts please?
KhajahQ8 2 years ago
It's possible. The most important part of completing the u-turn is to turn your head around to see where you want the bike to go. Takes some practice, but you'll get it.

Does this technique work with a small motorcycle like 100c (with narrower tyres)?
sanjak 2 years ago
Yes, it sure does. This technique is used even on a bicycle.
mevd 2 years ago
Thank you. I come back to answer my own question too. I just tried it and lost balance and was about to fall. I'm not sure whether it (Honda Wave s100) isn't designed for leaning turn or the tyres are too narrow.
sanjak 2 years ago
You need to build enough speed. If you're going too slow you won't be able to countersteer.

this is the best possible explanation of counter steering on entire youtube.....now after watching this it seems it's basic instinct that everyone does....other videos just made it such complicated thing and as if something that had to be learnt from scratch....seriously....kudos !!

i finally got it
energiefreak 2 years ago 23
I finally understand it completely; the way that a different video explained it made it sound like the counter-steer was done throughout the corner. This made no sense to me at all since I have a scientific background.
Finally makes complete sense; thank you.
