To perform this experiment you dissolve sodium hydroxide in water, heat it to the boiling point and put metalic zinc. Then you put an object made of copper. The copper is plated by zinc. When you heat it, the copper and zinc form an alloy - brass (bronze is an alloy of copper and tin).
I KNOW HOW TO DO THAT (i feel special) its just zing chloride i think that you dip it in. well im not sure if its zinc chloride but i know its zinc, and then you just heat it up and it turns bronze.
It's easy to make. Just take powdered zinc and sodiumhydroxide and of course water, then the copper coin becomes coated with a thin zinc layer (if you put in onto a heater).
If you want to see silver, which is in fact zinc, let it be, but if you want gold, you must put it into a flame (copper + zinc => brass, which gives the golden colour).
This Experiment ist great we did this in school. I gild 5ct an wanted to buy a thing for 10 ct and : It works xDDD

If you watched well, you noticed that the original coin was made of copper, which doesn't replace zinc in solution.
