I totally agree there, but then again, it depends on the comedian. I know many male comedians who play the dumb role, others play nervous, and others play the smart guy, who partially insults the audience. A good comic does a mix. One comedienne, who I find funny and talented, but still plays the 'blonde' role is Nicole Arbour. She is stunning, but relies on her looks, rather than her intellect. Thing is, she's a member of MENSA. I like her, but why not use her intelligence?

The audience are meant to feel smart, not stupid. But your interpretaion, I agree with. When women act stupid, they are sending out a dual message. But the late, great Bill Hicks not only made them equal, but gave them a sense of his opinion to tell them things they didn't know or give them a different side to a story. By acting in a ridiculous manner, I feel most comediennes (if not most comedians) make the audience feel more intelligent by purely false and surreptitious means

I like Mary Lynn a lot, but IMO she's a better performer -- comedic or dramatic -- than she is a stand-up. Maybe if she had better material written for her, I don't know. Her stand-up stuff is amusing enough, but it doesn't make you laugh out loud. What she does have is charm and a certain awkward confidence. She's the girl-next-door you really, really want to kiss.
