The King was not touring the world, only California, San Francisco and lower part of California. He returned to SF for medical treatment , but to no avail. He died and the ship that brought him to the mainland took his body home to Hawai'i. When the ship entered around the Diamond Head point, it was seen that the ship had black sails up, denoting a death of someone important, the Queen's beloved husband, David Kala_kaua.
Yes indeed! She sang beautifully at Merrie Monarch in 2006 singing ʻIpo Lei Manu which is commonly suggested that it was written by Queen Kapiʻolani for King Kalākaua while he was away touring the world. Nina still sings wonderfully! In fact, I had the wonderful privilege of sharing the stage with her in Redding, Penn in 1984 along with my brother Randy and Jimmy Kaina. She sang beautifully then…and she sings beautifully now! And…Hula IS alive in DALLAS! Kumu Keliʻi Chang
I remember Auntie Nina autographing a book on Hawaiian music artists after a concert at the Hawaii Theater in Honolulu in 2005. That was a special moment meeting her and the great Auntie Genoa Keawe. I believe Auntie Nina was one of the first Hawaiian artists educated at Julliard School of Music.
After all these years, Auntie Nina can still sing beautifully. I was lucky enough to hear her sing Ipo Lei Manu at the 2006 Merrie Monarch. I wish there were more videos for our younger generation to hear and appreciate. Mahalo for sharing! Alive and well in Dallas!
thank you Wanda. I was fighting back tears while filming. When Casey Olsen is playing the steel..on the left you see fingers strumming guitar, that's Gary Aiko!
Aunty Nina has a most beautiful voice; great music behind her, too, especially the steel guitar. Mahalo for sharing what had to be a wonderful birthday bash for Uncle's 90th birthday.

I remember first hearing Nina on HAWAII CALLS in 1958 and subsequently buying every album, tape and CD she sang upon.
She still has that wonderful mezzo soprano voice! Thanks for sharing this.
