I commend all the 100 students and staff for all their hard work because it's definitely not as easy as it looks. But to say that "non members" cant address concern/opinion to the band is ludicrous; disingenuous at most. Especially when the band is a direct beneficiary of FAMU student and alumni contributions. For ex., the sga funding that the band receives comes from activities and service fees that EVERY student pays in tuition. (cont)
So the band does indeed have a level of accountability when it comes to its constituents (FAMU students and alumni). I look at it like this: FAMU is a beautiful mansion built on a foundation of sterling academia and rich cultural heritage. Athletics (specifically football's winning tradition) serves as the marvelous veranda that is most visible to passersby. so the coaches and AD have issues with the band complying with conference rules in terms of appropriate playing times? i agree that it is ALL about the game. there4 the band's primary duty is to support the football team, which requires playing spirited tunes at appropriate times that stimulate momentum for the team and excite the fans so that they can support the team as well.
it's just funny how a thousand useless tuba, sax, tpet, and tbone fanfares find their place at the game yet we're bitchin if we want the band to support the team more. yeah those fanfares do a whole lot in enhancing the game atmosphere and backing the team. u sure every band member knows it's about the game and not the 100? because sometimes i cant tell.
The band and the crowd is the extra entity that is suppose to support the team, or so I thought. Perhaps our illustrious band didn't get that memo.
There needs to be major changes within the Marching 100 organizational structure. What use to work, doesn't necessarily work now.
And famuscholar89 this is not a diss to the 100. We love the 100 but you all need to understand that the band's #1 focus should be to support the team and give something for the crowd to enjoy...
LOL i lied i'm not done. i wanted to add that it was indeed the band that gave the team the momentum to come back and beat ncat this year. the 100 kept crankin ice cream paint job and the players got pumped up on the sideline, Vann ran back a kickoff, we won the game, and the rest is history in the FAMU win column. so the 100 playin when the game is close definitely has its advantages! alright i'm done fa real now lol
meac rules say the band can play during dead balls, time outs, quarter changes, and up until the point where the offensive team breaks the huddle. There is ample opportunity for the band to support the team and get the crowd crunk. but the problem is it takes an eternity for the band to get the songs off. mostly b/c everybody's not paying attention to the conductor/dm. and then they arent payin attention to the game. by time they get ready the small window to play has already passed.
furthermore, playin full songs isnt necessary to support the team and get the crowd hype. 30 sec snippets will suffice. some other bands do this very well in fact. if the band has to play full songs then reduce the volume to where it's just the woodwinds/cush playing til the full band can come back in at the right time. it's will take practice to perfect. watch football games in the bandroom and practice the right times and songs or come to the real football practice to simulate gameday in Bragg
discipline in the stands, payin attention to the play on the field, and modifyin stand songs whether shorter tunes or volume reduction will help the band achieve its primary purpose of supportin the team and gettin the crowd hype. this way everybody - the band, team, and fans - will be on one accord in Bragg; ultimately enhancin the gameday experience and makin Bragg the best place to be on Saturday afternoons in the fall. In football games, home field advantage is best because the home crowd is suppose to make as much noise as possible to rattle the other team. FAMU has one of the largest bands in college football to add to its noise level and the 100rd doesn't always do that. If you were at the game on yesterday, during the 4th and 1 stop the defense was calling for the crowd to make noise.
At homecoming the 100rd has been asked not to play when the other team was on offense at the line of scrimmage, but when that play started the the band should be playing. Also the band has to pump the crowd up when we are on offense so the crowd will stay in the game. Look at the FBS schools and how their bands keep the crowd in the game. FSU, UF, Tennessee all do a great job at it. When we traveled to SC State, the Marching 101 kept their crowd in the game

i never said that the band is supposed to make the football team win. i said the band's primary purpose is to SUPPORT the football team. sga and the AD cant send the band to every away because there are other organizations and sports team that require funding as well. they arent going to sacrifice the general student (sga) and softball team (AD) needs to prioritize sending the 100 to nc or delaware.i dont know an hbcu band that makes it to every away game. especially one the 100's size. do you?
if the band reduced to an economical travelling size like the virttuoso band then maybe the AD can send them to all the games. would the band be opposed to that idea? some band alumni i know dont like that idea bc they believe it's all or nothin when it comes to the 100. That mentality is counterproductive to fulfilling the band's primary purpose. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy what the band does in support of the team for the most part. I just think they could do it a lil more and better.

Man some people dont understand how a band or fans can change the outcome of a game. In the BCS world the fans are more into the football game than the band and Vice Verser in the HBCU world, so when the band is hype in the HBCU world the fans are hype which now hype up a tired and beat up football team. I as a player feed off the crowd rather it's booo's or cheer's I pull energy from the fans/band because nobody can play 4qt with out beng tired and beat up.

MEACkang, Perhaps we have been looking at FAMU through the wrong lenses. Perhaps we have given far too much credit to our world renowned programs like SBI, Pharmacy, Science and Technology, Engineering, the J-School or even Animal Sciences. They have done nothing for FAMU.
I believe the Marching 100 has been robbed. Perhaps they should begin to petition the State of Florida to rename FAMU to Florida A & M and The Marching 100 University !

Here I was thinkin that it was FAMU's illustrious reputation for producing the largest # of Black baccalaureates, educators, PhD physicists and MBAs in the nation that put the university on the map. Or the millions of federal grant/research dollars secured by FAMU's Pharmacy, CESTA, Environmental Sci Institute, and Engineering that have sustained the university's infrastructure FINANCIALLY. furthermore, playin full songs isnt necessary to support the team and get the crowd hype. 30 sec snippets will suffice. some other bands do this very well in fact. if the band has to play full songs then reduce the volume to where it's just the woodwinds/cush playing til the full band can come back in at the right time. it's will take practice to perfect. watch football games in the bandroom and practice the right times and songs or come to the real football practice to simulate gameday in Bragg

discipline in the stands, payin attention to the play on the field, and modifyin stand songs whether shorter tunes or volume reduction will help the band achieve its primary purpose of supportin the team and gettin the crowd hype. this way everybody - the band, team, and fans - will be on one accord in Bragg; ultimately enhancin the gameday experience and makin Bragg the best place to be on Saturday afternoons in the fall. FACT: at this game they did not play in between QTRs at A&T's game.... wen i go i want the full game experience. i shouldnt have to go to ATLANTA AND ORLANDO to get a good Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my dear sir/ma'am I LOVE FAMU and we are the baddest in the land!!!!! We did make our own noise... wat im sayin is the 100 is changing we use to play until we were given a PENATLY and then played in slick way as DTBrown put it playin low on/during set and hike back to blasting!!!! dont play and put ppl to SLEEP!!!!!!! PINK PANTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CMON DA E-N-T-I-R-E GAME.... da ham sandwhich its a orange elephant is wat other rattlers are callin it. im just in house expresssin my opinion

i love the hundred!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now imma say this becuz I AM PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We as fans of famu only got half azz performances at/during the game Saturday. All those sections were puttin every1 asleep!!!!! ugh sorry but since i was da fat boy trying to pump up a dead Bragg Stadium i needed to vent sorry but ppl need to hear this and maybe things will fall back in place

In football games, home field advantage is best because the home crowd is suppose to make as much noise as possible to rattle the other team. FAMU has one of the largest bands in college football to add to its noise level and the 100rd doesn't always do that. If you were at the game on yesterday, during the 4th and 1 stop the defense was calling for the crowd to make noise.

At homecoming the 100rd has been asked not to play when the other team was on offense at the line of scrimmage, but when that play started the the band should be playing. Also the band has to pump the crowd up when we are on offense so the crowd will stay in the game. Look at the FBS schools and how their bands keep the crowd in the game. FSU, UF, Tennessee all do a great job at it. When we traveled to SC State, the Marching 101 kept their crowd in the game

Well you need to talk to YOUR athletic director...and besides the band can not play unless it's between quarters and rarely during time outs because the team CAN NOT hear...dont blame a dead crowd on the band...MAKE your own noise..folks kill me..with so much to say..The 100 should go on strike for football games..exclusive performances only!! if the band goes on strike then it had better be prepared for the consequences. since the band is mostly funded thru the athletic dept, sga, and JHA when he deems necessary, goin on strike would only be hurting the band

No it wouldnt...and if it wasnt for the 100 then FAMU would NOT be what it is today even FINANCIALLY...DR. AMMONS has the ultimate say so not sga or any other student...and if YOU dont like when and how the band plays...dont come to the games...and until you come through the RANKS of the 100 then your opinion about how we play is NOT needed..but thanks for your concern...From a former member of the 100 and an Alumnus of Florida A & M University

I'll just say as a current student at Florida A & M University, I foremost attend the games for FAMU football. The band is a delightful bonus.

there really is no need for me to check my inbox...not to sound rude but once again your concern should not be with the band..The band does not make a team win a football game (ex: away games that the team wins without the band being in attendance)...and if so much "funding" is coming from SGA and the athletic dept then have them to send the band to ALL away games..like the "OTHER" schools do! we are not a radio station and we dont take personal song requests or advice from non 100 members

my comments are not to bash you..but I as well as many other individuals have worked VERY hard to become a part of the Marching 100..so if you don't like what we do when WE do it..then dont come to the games..you are someone from the outside looking in who does not know what Dr. White discusses with the Athetic Department and coaches..he has been doing this BEFORE you were born..and does not need your advice..I know it may sound rude but its the TRUTH

Damn Man coming from somebody who has played football and is thinking about coming to FAMU to play football, I as a player find it that when the band plays "Hype" Songs it helps me out as a player because now if I'm tired or a little beat up I have something to pump me up and that makes me want to make a big play. I love The 100 for what they do but I always feel like the band is the back bone and the 12th man to any HBCU football team because truth be told the fans come to the games for the ban

i never said that the band is supposed to make the football team win. i said the band's primary purpose is to SUPPORT the football team. sga and the AD cant send the band to every away because there are other organizations and sports team that require funding as well. they arent going to sacrifice the general student (sga) and softball team (AD) needs to prioritize sending the 100 to nc or delaware.i dont know an hbcu band that makes it to every away game. especially one the 100's size. do you?

if the band reduced to an economical travelling size like the virttuoso band then maybe the AD can send them to all the games. would the band be opposed to that idea? some band alumni i know dont like that idea bc they believe it's all or nothin when it comes to the 100. That mentality is counterproductive to fulfilling the band's primary purpose. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy what the band does in support of the team for the most part. I just think they could do it a lil more and better.

so i'm not making song requests, i'm simply offerin suggestion on how the band can improve on fulfilling their primary purpose. i'm not the only one who feels this way. there are some 100 alumni who feel the same way. so it's not a negative thing. nobody is beyond reproach when it comes to self improving. including the Marching 100.

Man some people dont understand how a band or fans can change the outcome of a game. In the BCS world the fans are more into the football game than the band and Vice Verser in the HBCU world, so when the band is hype in the HBCU world the fans are hype which now hype up a tired and beat up football team. I as a player feed off the crowd rather it's booo's or cheer's I pull energy from the fans/band because nobody can play 4qt with out beng tired and beat up.

that comment puzzled me too. since FAMU wouldnt be what it is today FINANCIALLY without the 100, then that must mean the band is bankin. meaning the band dont need to ask sga or Ammons to pay for scholarships, instruments, uniforms, repairs for them bc they got they own. also meaning they dont need to solicit donations from FAMU alumni and statewide fundraisers for trips like DC last year since they are clearly ballin already. i mean they MUST be if they made FAMU what it is today FINANCIALLY

MEACkang, Perhaps we have been looking at FAMU through the wrong lenses. Perhaps we have given far too much credit to our world renowned programs like SBI, Pharmacy, Science and Technology, Engineering, the J-School or even Animal Sciences. They have done nothing for FAMU.
I believe the Marching 100 has been robbed. Perhaps they should begin to petition the State of Florida to rename FAMU to Florida A & M and The Marching 100 University !

celenat5, apparently we have been using the wrong scope. Here I was thinkin that it was FAMU's illustrious reputation for producing the largest # of Black baccalaureates, educators, PhD physicists and MBAs in the nation that put the university on the map. Or the millions of federal grant/research dollars secured by FAMU's Pharmacy, CESTA, Environmental Sci Institute, and Engineering that have sustained the university's infrastructure FINANCIALLY. Guess we've been out the loop all this time.

lol that would be me!!! Believe you me i remember those GOOD OLE RATTLER Football days, but they played til we got a warning at least. This season i will say we only showed up and out in the stands wen we had a competitor across the field... As far as OUR team had the band come out to the scrimmage games so the team can become use to playing with the noise.. im not dissing the band just a lil disappointed that they werent the usual band wen it came to amping the fans and glad we cud discuss dis
